Pope: Other Christians not true churches
AP ^ | July 11, 2007 | NICOLE WINFIELD

LORENZAGO DI CADORE, Italy - Pope Benedict XVI has reasserted the universal primacy of the Roman Catholic Church, approving a document released Tuesday that says Orthodox churches were defective and that other Christian denominations were not true churches.

In the latest document — formulated as five questions and answers — the Vatican seeks to set the record straight on Vatican II's ecumenical intent, saying some contemporary theological interpretation had been "erroneous or ambiguous" and had prompted confusion and doubt.

It restates key sections of a 2000 document the pope wrote when he was prefect of the congregation, "Dominus Iesus," which set off a firestorm of criticism among Protestant and other Christian denominations because it said they were not true churches but merely ecclesial communities and therefore did not have the "means of salvation."

"Christ 'established here on earth' only one church," the document said. The other communities "cannot be called 'churches' in the proper sense" because they do not have apostolic succession — the ability to trace their bishops back to Christ's original apostles.

Everyone’s smarter than the Pope, that’s the most important thing!

I will leave it up to my Lord Jesus Christ to judge me and whether I am worthy of salvation.

Which is, IMHO, the way it should be.

Shouldn’t this be in the Religion forum?

I guess Benedict hopes that sounding like the Muzzies will get him some attention. Just what we need now as we face Jihadis on the move - another round of Christian infighting. Of course, those who know history are perfectly aware that the only reason the Moslem conquests were successful to begin with was that the various Christian princes and bishops and rites were fighting among themselves and did not unite against Islam, rather all sorts of byzantine (well, that’s where the word comes from) twists and turns of pitting one group against another and allying with the muzzies made the Christian East and then the West vulnerable to the Arabs. Bah!

Martin Luther proved otherwise, in case he missed it.

Hardly a surprise since the Catholics were the ones who originally gave Martin Luther and the rest of us Protestants the name Protestant. “One who protests” is certainly fitting. The Catholic Church has been protestable over the centuries.

This is already up in the Religion forum. This is going to end up like the long thread about the Latin Mass - bait for the Catholic bashers.

Basically reiterates non-Catholics not eligible for salvation

yeah, well as long as "Basically reiterates ..." means "Says nothing at all like ...".

There's an important distinction between saying this or that is the sho' 'nuff Church (or is "fully" the Church), and saying what will happen to the members of this or that group.

This thread should be interesting indeed. I wonder if the Pro-Jack Chick/Alberto Rivera crowd will come out of hiding for this one.

A hypocracy is a form of theocracy. Either that, or it’s a common misspelling on this forum.

Everyone is going to hell except us... Ho hum. The next thing you know, he will be asking for volunteers for a new Crusade! Could be very interesting.

Sounds like the Catholic Church and the Mormons have a lot in common. Hmm...

worshipping of one man ‘the pope’

We don't 'worship' the Pope, but I'm sure you already knew that. We respect him as the successor of Peter who WAS chosen by Christ to shepherd His people, His 'church' on earth. Funny how THAT bit of scripture seems to be ignored sometimes.

Where does it say in the Bible that the Pope has to wear that funny hat? Jesus Christ has saved me, whether the Pope thinks so or not is irrelevant.

As a non-Catholic, I’m glad he says this. It is more honest and will lead to less confusion. I agree with that. It's a private religion and has every right to restate its doctrine. Beyond that, I have no problem with Catholic teachings and not sure trying to unite all Christian faiths is a bad thing.
