Lesson 35 of 43.
Lesson 35 of 43.
Catholicism also defines “improper use” of Mary’s name and the saint’s names as violations of this commandment, correct? If so, why was this omitted?
However, Can. 1369 provides: "A person who in a public show or speech, in published writing, or in other uses of the instruments of social communication utters blasphemy, gravely injures good morals, expresses insults, or excites hatred or contempt against religion or the Church is to be punished with a just penalty." Of course that's only for Catholics, who should know better.
So it's an expansion or extension of the 2nd commandment, which is common in the Catechism. In other words, using vile language against the saints, the Church, or sacred things tends to call God's name into disrepute and provoke hatred for God.
It doesn't mean that the saints, the Church or sacred things are on a level with God.
2148
Blasphemy is directly opposed to the second commandment. It consists in uttering against God - inwardly or outwardly - words of hatred, reproach, or defiance; in speaking ill of God; in failing in respect toward him in one's speech; in misusing God's name. St. James condemns those "who blaspheme that honorable name [of Jesus] by which you are called." The prohibition of blasphemy extends to language against Christ's Church, the saints, and sacred things. It is also blasphemous to make use of God's name to cover up criminal practices, to reduce peoples to servitude, to torture persons or put them to death. The misuse of God's name to commit a crime can provoke others to repudiate religion.
