A former Gladewater pastor pleaded guilty in court Tuesday morning to two counts of aggravated sexual assault of a child. Larry Jackson, 55, of Kilgore was arrested on the charges in October. Jackson could face between 5 years and life in prison for each charge. Testimony continued Tuesday in the sentencing phase of his trial.
In her opening statement, Assistant District Attorney Jenny Huckle said Jackson molested two sisters under the age of 14 in the late 1990s. The oldest girl is now a sophomore in college, and the youngest girl will soon be a college freshman. Jackson was the pastor at Gladewater Church of Christ. The girls and their family did not attend the church.
"That preacher put those little girls through their own personal hell," Huckle said to the jury. The girls' mother was friends with Jackson and his wife. Huckle said the woman relied on the couple to take care of her daughters while she was at work and her husband, who served in the military, was stationed out of the state. The mother did not learn of the abuse until years later when the family moved to Virginia.
Defense attorney Clifton "Scrappy" Holmes said confession was "good for the soul" but not for a criminal defense. He said testimony in the trial would discuss all aspects of Jackson's character, and he requested the jury remember the good as well as the bad when deciding Jackson's sentence.

Victims of abuse are asking other victims to step out of the shadows and the Evansville diocese to acknowledge their responsibilities.
The Silent Lambs organization and Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests say recent revelations of molestation by a local priest is another example of the church's failure to protect the innocent.
They showed up Sunday at Saint Benedict's Cathedral handing out fliers encouraging members to support abuse victims and to push the catholic church to be honest about abusive priests.
David Clohessy says Bishop Ferald Gettelfinger's recent disclosure of abuse by now deceased Monsignor Othmar Schroeder prompted the action.
Clohessy says for 11 years Bishop Gettelfinger has known that Schroeder is a predator and yet kept silent.
He also says Gettelfinger admitted that there are others whose names he has not disclosed.

How disgusting - hang him!
What we really have to do is find a way to blame this on the Gays.
What we really have to do is find a way to blame this on the Gays.
You need to get with the program here.Coleus, who posts about Protestant abuse very often, as in this case, posts stories of hetero abuse, While Cincinatus posts about Catholic abuse which is most often gay.
You can not blame this problem on gays unless you know something about Coleus and Cincinatus of which I am unaware.
Now there's an interesting statement. FReeper Cincinatus has posted all of five threads in the past two years, and none of those have been about sexual abuse by any religious organization.
FReeper Coleus, on the other hand, has posted thirty-seven threads about Protestant sexual abuse - and only one story about Catholic priests (re restoring the reputation of the Catholic priesthood in the light of sexual abuse) - just in the current month.
You can not blame this problem on gays unless you know something about Coleus and Cincinatus of which I am unaware.
Are you suggesting that Coleus' or Cincinatus' posting habits might have something to do with their sexual orientation?
My apologies to Cicinatus. I was refering to Titus Q(somthing) Cicinatus. I can’t spell it so I shortened it. Sorry
I'm sure the people you've talked about would prefer it if you actually pinged them to your posts.
TQC, ping also to my post #6.
How do you ping what you can’t spell?

In a surprise move, Portland Archbishop John G. Vlazny today released 2,000 pages of documents on priests accused of sexually abusing Oregon children.....(snip)
Bud Bunce, a spokesman for the Archdiocese, said the release had nothing to do with Pope Benedict XVI's trip to the United States or his apology for church's sex abuse scandal.
Portland attorneys who have filed sex abuse suits against the Archdiocese expressed bafflement over the unscheduled release, which comes less than 2 weeks after one round of failed mediation and a day before another is set to start.
"I don't know how the Archdiocese thinks," said attorney Kelly Clark. "I just don't get it."
