Animal rights group protests over Pope's fur
AFP ^ | July 22, 2008

ROME (AFP) — One of Italy's leading animal rights groups said Monday it was launching an Internet petition to demand Pope Benedict XVI stop wearing fur during religious ceremonies at the Vatican.

Lorenzo Croce, chairman of the Italian Association for the Defence of Animals and the Environment (AIDAA), denied being provocative or wanting to make an anti-religious statement.

"We just want to ask him in a message of love and peace to give a strong signal towards the protection of animals and the environment through a small but very significant personal sacrifice," Croce told the Italian news agency ANSA.

Since his election Pope Benedict has taken to wearing a number of traditional religious garments, including a small red velvet cape with a white ermine border, which he wears in winter along with a hat the same colour.

The association has created a website to accept signatures and Croce wants to present the petition to the pope in September.

Pope Benedict returned late on Monday to Rome after a nine-day visit to Australia marked by his historic apology for the scourge of paedophilia in the Catholic church.

Photogenic he is not.

Buca di Beppo, a chain of “family style” Italian restaurants, has a Pope Room in every location. You can ask for your group to sit there and it has various Pope-related material including a bust of the pontiff. The Buca web site has a drawing of him saying, “Table for XVI please...” :)

Well, he's not glamorous, which seems to be most folk's idea of 'photogenic'.

He reminds me of a favorite Opa. His eyes are kind.

I think these folks who're complaining ought to have to keep 2-3 little weasels in their house for awhile.

Mean nasty quarrelsome things -- their only use is to provide ermine for such as want it.

Thank you so much for posting this information! I have been agonizing over what to buy my father for his birthday. His parents immigrated from Germany - and this looks like one book he would truly enjoy. Thank you!

ROFL!!! We have a Buca di Beppo here in Albany and hold our staff Christmas luncheon there every year. Surprisingly good food for a chain restaurant and great atmosphere.

I went once. We weren’t even in the “pope room,” but there were tons of pictures of various pontiffs scattered around. Then as we left we saw the room w/ the bust on the table. Tad creepy.

My favorite is rahmschnitzel though I’ve never been able to make it as good at home as I’ve had in restaurants. There are a lot of receipes online for it. I’m gonna keep trying.

Hope he likes it.

I loved reading this, as we have spent over 7 years in Bavaria.

Many of the places described in the book were regular haunts of ours.

This book was a birthday present to me from my wife!

That book looks very interesting. Have you seen this one?

Pope Benedict XVI: Servant of the Truth by Peter Seewald
From the description:

This book, written mainly by Seewald, describes the paths of Joseph Ratzinger’s life from his birthplace in Bavaria all the way to being the first German Pope in 482 years. It is lavishly illustrated with a collection of over 150 of some of the most personal, and most surprising, photographs. These show the Pope as he really is: “a humble servant in the vineyard of the Lord”.

I would add to AAM’s comment that some photographs are more flattering than others. That particular photo is among the less flattering, IMHO.

Hey, it's still summer - he's allowed!

One of the 25 SIGNS YOU ARE GOING TO HELL!:
* Wear white after Labor Day

* Use the F word more than once a day.

Is that once a day every day? What if you only say fu and don't finish the word, does that count?

* Have undressed people with your eyes at family reunions.

Jarvis, Australia is near Mississippi and Arkansas? Who knew? I really have to pay attention to maps.

Well, I for one think Pope BXVI has beautiful white hair. My grandfather on the German side of my family had that same lovely whiter than white hair. I think this Pope is adorable in a fatherly, twinkly eyes way. He ain’t gorgeous (actually Pope John Paul the Great was a very handsome man in his middle years), but he exudes wisdom and love of life. Beauty is in the eyes of the beholder.

I just wonder if somebody isn't in charge of collecting less-than-flattering photos of anybody not popular with the news media (including HH BXVI).

I happen to know that the local legal scandal rag here has a full time employee whose job is to gather unflattering photos of possible subjects of news articles. They do a pretty good job of it, too.

That seems to me to be part of the job description for AP photographers. Given that I regularly check the photos posted on Yahoo! News of Pope Benedict XVI for the weekly audience threads, it seems that the most unflattering photos tend to be attributed to the AP.

Agreed, absolutely. I didn't mean to imply otherwise. I was merely pointing out that some published photos are more flattering than others. It seems some photographers have an agenda to present those with whom they disagree in less than flattering images.
