Is Anti-Catholicism Dead? (Ques. Proposed by NY Times)
NY Times City Room Blog ^ | 7/23/2008 | Sewell Chan

When Gov. Alfred E. Smith ran for president in 1928, his candidacy was derailed in large part by anti-Catholic prejudice. It has been nearly 48 years since John F. Kennedy became the first (and so far only) Roman Catholic president, but experts say that anti-Catholic sentiment — much of it originating in, or as a response to, immigrants in New York — remains an enduring force in American culture.

That was the consensus of a panel assembled at the Museum of the City of New York on Tuesday night to consider the question, “Is Anti-Catholicism Dead?

...The Rev. Richard John Neuhaus — a leading conservative intellectual, a former Lutheran pastor and the editor of the leading Catholic journal First Things — offered a surprising view on the question.

“To be a Catholic is not to be refused positions of influence in our society,” he said. “Indeed, one of the most acceptable things is to be a bad Catholic, and in the view of many people, the only good Catholic is a bad Catholic.”

...He added that anti-Catholicism was as likely to come from the left — sometimes from commentators who believe that a “threatening theological insurgency is engineered and directed by Catholics,” with evangelical Protestants merely as the movement’s “foot soldiers.”

I can't tell you the number of replies I have deleted and walked away from the computer. Sometimes just walk away. I had to do that earlier and the poster is still at it with anyone who will reply. Ug.

LOL! I can certainly relate. Signs should be prominently displayed that say, "Please, do not feed the gargoyles!"

Personally, I do not consider the raving moonbats who infect this forum spewing their hatred of either Mormons or Catholics as conservatives. They may pretend to be conservatives in order to avoid a zot. They may even hold a few showcase conservative positions. But their sole purpose on this forum is to divide religion against religion and further fragment the conservative movement.

Check the posting history of the worst offenders. You will see they talk about little else. They also have a dedicated caucus of camp followers whom they will call in to dominate any thread which even suggests there may be good in the target of their hatred.

While I personally see organized religion of any kind as mainly another way to divert my hard-earned money to them, I must confess that I have a special affection for both Mormons and Catholics for all the crap which gets thrown at them. I've never been able to comprehend the Taliban Christian animosity to both groups beyond the fact that both groups believe good works are necessary in addition to faith in Jesus Christ. The best I can figure is that they think God grades on a curve and these two groups are breaking or distorting the curve. Otherwise, they'd just shut up and leave them alone or possibly even try to upstage them with good works of their own.

There is NO anti-Catholicism on Free Republic. None. Zero. Nada. Period-dot-end of story.

Anybody who says otherwise is just a tool of the Whore of Babylon.

Well I appreciate your sense of this subtle difference.

What I mostly see is conservative A/C’s calling me and most Christians thoughout time lame idiots.

Of course this includes people like St. Frances, Joan of Arc, St. Jerome, and well lets face it. These giants of Western Civilization are not as sharp or as good at living the Gospel as your average A/C FREEPER.

Great post.

I think there are other things that the left would like to do that evangelicals will not:

1) Put your clergy in prison for speaking out against homosexuality

2) Shut down your charities unless you give out birth control

3) Shut down your churches unless you perform gay “marriage” ceremonies

Compared to being annoyed by evangelicals trying to save you, it’s not even worth bothering about the evangelicals.

Did you know the KKK reconstructed in 1915 was Anti Semetic, anti black , anti communist and Anti Catholic...

Now I don't have too much trouble with the anticommunist..Even a stopped clock is right twice a day...

But the same hate fuels racism as fuels anti catholicism.

“And the Secular Left just loves to pit the Evangelicals against the Catholics”
Thanks for your insightful response. As one of our founding Fathers said: “If we don’t hang together, we’ll surely hang separately”.
BTW, everytime I see DU, the first thing I think of is Ducks Unlimited. LOL!

Catholics are second only to Mormons in being the most hated brand of religion by the moonbats of the religious left. Of course if they are a CINO, like JF Kerry or a faux Mormon, like Harry Reid, they get a pass.

There is no doubt in my mind Catholics are far more hated than any other group in this country.
