What on earth could draw a crowd of men like you see pictured above? (No, it's not a diaconate ordination in Santa Barbara -- though it's close.)
It's just a typical rally of the Holy Name Society for the Archdiocese of New York in 1936.
As Dr. McNamara points out:
Founded by the Dominicans in the thirteenth century to venerate the name of Jesus, the Holy Name Society was introduced to the United States in the 1860’s. By the 1950’s there were over two thousand societies in the United States, and it was common for most men in the parish to be members. During the first half of the twentieth century, dioceses held Holy Name rallies that attracted crowds of 60,00-100,000 Catholic men. And this wasn't seen as anything unusual.
Amazing.

The HNS is still active but with greatly diminished numbers. To learn more, go to the following link.

Didn’t Promise Keepers used to draw such attendance?

No Chapter in my parish, St. Mary of the Mills in Laurel, MD. We're one of the biggest parishes in the Archdiocese of Washington.

We had a major renovation about two years ago - it's even nicer now. Are you in the D.C. area?

No serious US politicians prior to 1965 dared to promote abortion or homosexual marriage because they knew huge numbers of dedicated Christians would have instantly mobilized against them.

Yeah, I’m down in northern Virginia. I visited your parish last year, so I got to see it after the renovations. I went there for a day-long retreat.

Good point! Where are those voices today? Other than Catholics and, occasionally Evangelicals, where are the voices of the Orthodox or Anglicans or Lutherans outside the abortion mills? Or is the msm not including their numbers in their reporting?

The idea of “homosexual marriage” would have been met with gales of laughter practically anywhere in America prior to 1975.

Or is the msm not including their numbers in their reporting? More than a decade ago I know of an ELCA Lutheran Pastor who felt called to serve as Planned Parenthood "Escort" to walk women headed to the clinic from their cars past the protesters.
When I learned of that I decided to stand silent across the street wearing an enlargement of a Herman Otten "cartoon" depicting an infant Baptism with these words: "REAL LUTHERANS DON'T ABORT BABIES--THEY BAPTIZE THEM".
It was a very interesting two hours. Most of the other protesters harangued and screamed at the clinic and its customers. Quite the antithesis of the chosen servant described in Isaiah 42.

Ah, for the days when Catholics had organizations like the Holy Name Society. Nowadays it seems that they embrace more secular names like National Council of Catholic Women or Catholic Men’s Fellowship.

Good for you! But that was a decade ago. Do you know of any Lutheran Churches that actively pray at the abortion mills?
