MARYVILLE, Ill. (AP) The widow of a pastor killed in mid-sermon urged mourners to reject hate and to take comfort in their faith at his funeral Friday, in the church where he was gunned down five days earlier.
"On Sunday, my husband didn't die. He simply got a promotion," Cindy Winters said. She raised a hand to the sky as the "Movin' on Up" theme from "The Jeffersons" blared from the loudspeakers and the standing-room-only crowd rose to its feet at First Baptist Church in this St. Louis suburb.
Fred Winters was eulogized as a coupon-clipping brainiac who never forgot a name and a devoted family man whose love for basketball was outmatched by his passion for the Bible. The 45-year-old had a bachelor's degree, two master's degrees and a doctorate, but his wife joked, "I could never teach him how to fold laundry."

In New Zealand we have a term for this phenomenon: “gobsmacked”. I’m gobsmacked.
Good intentions with bad music.
Right there with ya.
Hey, Christians: Every worship service, every wedding, every funeral ought to focus on the life, death, and resurrection of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.
You can’t go wrong if you remember who is supposed to be glorified when we meet together.
(grin!)
OK, I never saw a picture of the pastor, so I assumed the family is black. But a quick google search shows that they’re as caucasian as the Cleavers.
Maybe it’s just grief. Regardless, every person who was there last Sunday saw a horrible, murdeorous act and even if not harmed physically were harmed emotionally and spiritually. So there’s that.

Sketch out your funeral preferences now. Otherwise, no telling what fool thing your relatives will do.
In six years in the Philippines I saw many, many funeral processions, and I’d say over 85% had Frank Sinatra singing “I Did It My Way” blaring from loudspeakers on top of the hearse. I was always gobsmacked.
My 33 year old son-in-law died about 2 years ago and my daughter let the 3 kids each pick out a song. Kids aged 8, 11 and 13. I don't remember the songs they picked but I remember being embarrassed, maybe I shouldn't have been but it's a fact.
The only explanation for my daughter's temporary lack of common sense is grief.

I agree, it's her quote in the thread title that most convinces me of that, she's kept her heart on the right track.
I am full of respect for this woman. I would be a crumpled heap of helplessness if my husband had been murdered infront of me just a week earlier. Her heart is in the right place, whatever song she needs to hear in her war against Satan....more power to her.
Heck, I was codswalloped.

Wow, if this isn't witnessing what is?
I think I would be so consumed with anger I would want to kill the guy who did it.
