It's been an unusual few weeks where LDS beliefs on a variety of topics have emerged in the news. These include the value of missionary work on young men's maturity, service, fasting, happiness and stem cell research. Perhaps this is good news...
There have been a number of recent stories about where different religions stand on stem cell research. Mormons, particularly, Sen. Orrin Hatch, R-Utah, have been the focus of news stories about how religious beliefs define the issue. This comes as members of the Georgia legislature are considering a measure that would define "a living in vitro human embryo is a biological human being." Atlanta Journal-Constitution columnist Jay Bookman wrote:
"The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints likewise takes no definitive view of when the embryo or fetus acquires a soul, although some Mormons set it at the moment the embryo attaches itself to the womb. That explains why U.S. Sen. Orrin Hatch of Utah, ordinarily a strong social conservative, can also be a strong advocate of embryonic stem-cell research. "

This is what it comes down to.
(1) Are you the type of person who filters "truth" and your accompanying worldview emerging from that "truth" through the bottom of a hat?
(2) Are you the type of person who filters "truth" through the visions of a 14-year-old lad who said he spoke to two unnamed "personages?"
['Cause lo & behold when you look thru the First Vision, other than one "personage" referencing the other as "son" we don't ever hear any "ID"...when God appeared to Moses, He identified Himself ("I AM").]
More like copying it off the internet and passing it off as their own work.
Every one of those scholars is smarter and has more integrity than you.

Since you like to get personal, do you personally who anyone who “is smarter and has more integrity than” ejonesie22 ????
Personally I think that anyone who knows the that Joey Smith was a liar, and that the so called “church” and the book of mormon are untrue “is smarter and has more integrity than” Joey Smith and the mormons...
Boston.com has some latest propaganda about DNA..

I think "Joe" already has.
Am I wrong in thinking that mormons believe if a baby is aborted, the spirit of the dead child just goes back to the celestrial nursery and into another baby ???
You know, I don’t really know. The way it was explained to me, the spirit entered the body at conception, so an aborted (or miscarried) baby still would have had a body. The LDS believe we are here to learn and progress to perfection, so if a child was miscarried then the spirit of that child was so perfect that they only needed a body, not the full life lessons learned here on earth.
That being said, the LDS DO NOT perform ordinances for miscarried (or stillborn) children. So there may be some disconnect there.
Jesus Christ, Holy Spirit, Father God. The Holy Trinity. This is the true faith. Mormons & LDS as revealed by Mr. J. Smith is simply a man-god constructed cult. Cult. again.. cult.
Now, come on, don’t be shy. Tell us how you REALLY feel. :)
Aren't these the beliefs of people groups who believe in reincarnation?
LOL....and editing all of Joseph Smith's papers for the edification of the world...
How comes you didn’t tell us you wuz once a member of that capital “C” church?
A Fredism I'm afraid, unless he is using an islamic definition that all are mormon, just some of us don't know it yet. He must have eaten some out of date spam.
The evidence is compelling. The people of the time only used the consonants NHM. There are contemporaneous inscriptions calling it NHM. The local Arab word to describe the place means “cutting stone.” The Israelite word, using the same consonants, means “consolation.” So what? That is acknowledged. NHM is a place that is indicated in the Book of Mormon as already having a name, as opposed to other landmarks which were described, but given names by Lehi and his family. NHM has a large ancient burial ground, and the Book of Mormon recounts that Ishmael was buried there. It is located at the eastward turn in the old frankincense trail, and is due west of Wadi Sayq, just as the Book of Mormon says. Wadi Sayq is one of about 7 tiny pockets of green on the East coast of Saudi Arabia. Nobody knew about them in 1830. All the flora and fauna described in the Book of Mormon exist there. And veins of iron ore that emerged onto the surface, combined with other elements that make it useable for toolmaking even by an amateur. You can just chip it off the surface and smelt it.
I spoke with a BYU professor last Summer who is assembling a book which will contain about 1,000 different discoveries — some made by BYU scholars, and some by other scholars — which confirm details in the Book of Mormon. I’ll post the title when it is published.
It is this flood of new information which has prompted people like your friend Elsie to concede that the Book of Mormon might have had a supernatural origin. . . But it must have been demons.
BTW, all other disputes aside. I like your tagline.
“Since you like to get personal, do you personally who anyone who is smarter and has more integrity than ejonesie22 ????”
Absolutely. Including some of the people doing the research and vetting it. I went to college with one of them — we were in the advanced placement program together years ago. I had Philosophy classes from another. He was the most brilliant professor I had. And he would never behave like the people on this thread. Others are acquaintances who have built solid academic careers — Something I’d be willing to bet none of the Antis on this thread have ever done.
I am in complete agreement with your statement, sv.
BYU is a fine university by any objective measure. You can’t support your swipe at it.
Never overestimate your own brilliance nor underestimate that of others.
Or as I often say, before running off and bragging about being chosen for the firing squad, make sure you know what end they put you on, for like Christmas, tis better to give than receive...
You are aware of course what happens when you assume?
