The New Anti-Semitism: anti-Mormon
gPolitics ^ | March 27, 2009 | George McNaughton

Posted on 03/30/2009 2:01:29 PM PDT by delacoert

It was suggested that being anti-Mormon is the new politically correct anti-semitism given what happened to Romney in Dixie.  There are some problems with that concept especially down in Dixie.  The first that comes to mind is when did anyone ever accuse Dixie of being poltically correct.  But on a more serious note,  any Mormon who had lived awhile in either the South or the Midwest could not have been very surprised that Romney took a shellacing in the Midwest and the South.

The fact that religious prejudice reared it's ugly head and took a bite out of the only faithful neo-conservative in the Republican ranks serves notice on wealth oriented Republicans that there is a price to be paid in mining the legions of intolerance.  That price is they have to recognize that the Solid Republican South created by Reagan was built upon the conversion of the formerly Solid Democratic South resulting from the passage under Lyndon Johnson of the Civil Rights Act.

It is a tiger of intolerance whether racist or bigotry which the Forbesian/Limbaugh/Newt Gingrich crowd can't dismount even when they want to.  The Evangelical minister from Iowa that candidly admitted that his colleagues were going to have a tough time telling their congregations to vote for a candidate who had a religious affiliation with what they had been preaching against for decades even if he was standing up for their political objectives.

It's that weird thing about wedding yourself to a brand of religious freedom which is translated as meaning freedom to believe as the Evangelicals believe that gets in the way.

But now, after the election and in the wake of Proposition 8, a Mormon neo-conservative like Romney has an even bigger problem.  Now he not only would have to overcome the ill-deserved bigotry of the South, but he would also be subjected to the fury of some moderates who feel that the gays got unfairly treated in part because of Mormon influence with regards to that vote in California.  While it is true that "log cabin" Republicans are not a particularly large portion of the Republican party -- those who sympathize with the gays do include a fair number of the moderates.  So now the difficulty for a Mormon Republican becomes nearly insurmountable since such a candidate is likely to get attacked by both sides of his party.

In addition, the occasional Mormon politician in the Northeast who might aspire to office is going to find him or herself in a true political N'oreaster whether he or she really cares about same sex marriage or not.  If you are Mormon you were already likely to be assumed to be Republican (it's amazing that nobody seems to ever remember Harry Reid's religious persuasion), but now you will be assumed to be a homophobe as well.  Of course, it has been said by others that being anti-gay is the last palatable discrimination -- so maybe we deserve it.

Yeah, with Romney, it was all about bigotry. Never mind his support of gay 'rights' and abortion 'rights' in the past. Never mind Romneycare. Never mind his failure to support gun rights. Never mind the clear impression that he will say anything to win over a given electorate and then change when he is selling himself to a new electorate. Never mind the lack of military background in the family, which matters quite a bit in the South.

It was all just bigotry, I tell you!

Hah - you mean the same CA where a majority of voters supported the initative?

This article is totally gay. But it is right - Southerners got on board with that criminal Huckabee rather than Mitt.

Oh goodness... que the violins.

The Mormons get persecuted like the Jews were?

Ill-deserved "bigotry" against Romney from "the South"?

Mitt Romney is a flaming liberal opportunist and richly deserves Conservative rejection.

The only bigotry here is the one in the article against Southerners and Christians.

And comparing skepticism of the Romnatic and the persecution of Jews is repulsive.

Speaking on behalf of Dixie, we would be highly offended if anyone were to call us politically correct.

How can Romney claim bigotry, when we elected a Kenyan born Muslim instead?

Palin-Bachmann 2012.

We are suffering Obama because McCain. Huckabee also sucked and sadly Fred was too slow to get started. Mitt would have been better than McCain.

You damn right! ATTENTION: All liberals who think of moving to the South.

You screwed up your home states, so stay there and enjoy the rotten fruits of your labors. Don’t even think about moving here.

We don’t give a damn how y’all did things where you come from.

I’d like Palin-DeMint. I think a Conservative male Senator from the South is a perfect match for a Conservative woman Governor from the North.

I know virtually nothing about the Mormon faith, and I don't really care to. But, I agree that there does seem to be some anti-Mormon bigotry coming from a number of different places.

That show "Big Love" is really prejudiced. And, it seems that Mormon jokes are still politically correct. As a Catholic, I take offense to much of the anti-Catholic ranting that goes on in the MSM, so I guess I don't appreciate when others are bashed as well.

I decided Fred was right when he told off that smarmy school marm in Iowa. But he was too late by then. Romney would've been far better than McCain because he would have at least punched back. All other factors being equal, I look at a Mormon candidate as an advantage because the rank and file of that group are more conservative than any other sect. Of course there are exceptions like Harry Reid, who pay more attention to the DNC bosses than the tenants of their religion.

Nah, we are suffering Obama because Bushbots could not bring themselves to tell Bush the voters thought the country was going in the wrong direction. Maybe by 2010 the GOP will find something more persuading than 'Vote for us, the other guy is worse.' A Contract with America did the job before.
