Newt Gingrich on his conversion to Catholicism
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution ^ | April 5, 2009 | Jim Galloway

Posted on 04/05/2009 4:11:27 PM PDT by Alex Murphy

Congressional Quarterly has posted a transcript of “Fox News Sunday,” including this exchange between Chris Wallace and Newt Gingrich about the former House speaker’s conversion to Catholicism:

WALLACE: Mr. Gingrich, you have been a Baptist most of your life, and last Sunday you converted to Catholicism. Why, sir?

GINGRICH: I’m not talking about this much publicly, but let me just say that I found over the course of the last decade, attending the basilica, meeting with Monsignor Rossi, reading the literature, that there was a peace in my soul and a sense of well being in the Catholic Church, and I found the mass of conversion last Sunday one of the most powerful moments of my life.

WALLACE: You have — it’s no secret — been married and divorced twice. Will you be able to participate fully in communion and all the other rites of the Catholic Church?

GINGRICH: Yes, we have done everything within the law of the church, following all of the rules of the church over the last 10 years. And it’s been a process. It’s been a very long process and something which was deeply affected, in part, by Pope Benedict XVI’s visit and the opportunity I had to sit in — as you know, my wife, Calista, sings at the basilica every Sunday, and I was allowed as a spouse to be there as part of the vespers program when the pope came. It’s been a long process.

WALLACE: And if I might ask, just briefly, what is it about the pope’s visit that led to this?

GINGRICH: I really believe, first of all, seeing the joy in his eyes, listening to his message, and I really believe that his basic statement, Christ our hope, is right. And I think much of what’s wrong with our country and with the western world is a function of looking inside ourselves, not just looking at money or looking at our wallets.

There are three that I use. 1) The Greek New Testament; Aland, Black, etal Published by the United Bible Societies. You need the Greek-English Dictionary of the New Testament (Same publisher)

2) The Complete Word Study New Testament (KJV) Translated by Dr. Spiros Zodhiates. This one has a concordance dictionary etc.. all included. It is a bit on the pricey side but you can get it through Amazon.com. Serious word of warning you will need a magnifying glass for the dictionary.

Both of these have some built in Biases so the one I use most often is:

3) E-sword. You can use it on line of get a copy (CD)for a small fee. http://www.e-sword.net/ This has every translation available and the guy that runs the site is a really nice dedicated Christian. I also have a copy of a paper I wrote about a year or so ago that goes into great detail about the "Born again" vs "Born from above". Can I e-mail you a copy? 3)

Ann, I don’t have time to search ALL those threads. If you do, go ahead. Yes, we agree that all who believe in Jesus Christ as Saviour are Christians. It doesn’t matter what denomination we are. Jesus founded the Body of Christ, not the Catholic church. His was the catholic church, not the Catholic church. The small c’d catholic church means universal. That’s all of us who believe on Him. I know you are a devout Catholic and believe differently.

I was just thinking how much I love Pope Benedict and how sincere he is about his faith. That is quite a testament!
Welcome to our church Miss Marple! : )

"Now, if the Catholic church can recognize the validity of your baptism, why can't you return the same respect?"

Well said, LE! : )

Good for newt on the religious front. Now as a voter I would like to hear his full confession on the swindle he engineered on the term limits vote.

The only part of the contract with America that failed, and newt engineered it with changed votes. His own promise, and he caused it to fail.

As far as I am concerned he is unforgiven.

The Catholic Church was the Original Body of Christ......all other denominations are Breakaway Sects who are ALSO part of the BODY of CHRIST.....why can’t you just admit the facts. It shouldn’t be demeaning to you to do so...it is a FACT.....not an opinion.

Like I said repeatedly, I read it in the Bible. Still waiting for someone to show me where in the Bible it says that you must be a member of any particular church in order to be saved.

No truly born-again Christian could become a Catholic.

From my perspective, no truly thinking Catholic would ever need to be born again.

The choice is made with the sacrament of Confirmation. It confirms the choice made in Baptism.

Who makes the choice in infant baptism? The infant certainly can’t.
