Marian visions on Samoa church wall

Hundreds of people are gathering to see an image allegedly of the Virgin Mary that has appeared on the wall of a Congregational Christian Church building in the Samoan capital of Apia.

Believers said the wavering form, shaped like a Coca-Cola bottle, was clearly that of Mary with a rosary in her hands. Others said it looked more like Christ, according to an AAP report on news.com.au.

Local Catholic priest Father Spatz Silva told the Samoa Observer the reported vision was being investigated, but said there was no doubt of a general message to steer clear of sin.

"This is something people should look deeply into," he said. "Look at yourself and ask if you are still walking the path Jesus wants us to take."

The Samoa Observer's editor Keni Lesa said he was convinced it was a "good depiction of the virgin".

"It's pretty amazing really," Mr Lesa said.

Local Catholic priest Father Spatz Silva told the Samoa Observer the reported vision was being investigated, but said there was no doubt of a general message to steer clear of sin.

The Australian's coverage contains a longer version of CathNews' article. It includes these additional details, which may explain Father Spatz Silva's "steer clear" comment:

"A WEEK after Samoans prayed en masse for a safe switch to driving on the left, a vision of the Virgin Mary has appeared"....

....The country marked a major national event on September 7 when drivers moved from the right to the left side of the road.

The shift brought Samoa into line with Australia and New Zealand and was aimed at encouraging the 170,000 Samoans living in these countries to export cars home.

An eight-year-old girl became the first casualty of the switch on Saturday when she was hit by a bus after looking the wrong way when crossing the road.

An arm was amputated as a result.

Well, sure, there’s gonna be a family resemblance...

This kinda stuff is an embarrassment to the church.

I’ve always thought 90% of these were people seeing what they want to see, and 10% seeing something that wasn’t there.
