The Pastor Who Has Obama's Attention
Washington Post ^ | 10/13/2009 | Jacqueline L. Salmon

Posted on 10/13/2009 8:56:08 PM PDT by Saije

The Rev. Jeremiah Wright is long gone; Rick Warren, just an Inauguration Day memory. The hordes of ministers around town who were hoping they'd somehow wind up with the first family in their pews have (mostly) given up.

The president has been pastorless for quite a while now. Well, sort of.

Seventy miles from Washington's prying eyes, Barack Obama has been attending church from time to time at Camp David, where services are led by a 39-year-old Navy chaplain with a famous last name, a compelling life story and a fervent belief in a God who works miracles.

Carey Cash, the great-nephew of singer Johnny Cash and the younger brother of a former Miss America, sees the hand of God in every part of his journey: from the football fields where he once aspired to the NFL to the medical facilities where he learned he'd never play again; from the battered Humvee where he came under fire on the streets of Baghdad to the tiny chapel where he preaches to the country's commander in chief in the Western Maryland mountains.

Although Cash was assigned to Camp David by the Navy, the president really likes the guy. Cash, Obama told religion reporters this summer, "delivers as powerful a sermon as I've heard in a while. I really think he's excellent."

But don't make the mistake of referring to the imposing 6-foot-4 Southern Baptist chaplain as the president's pastor. The White House has said that's not the case.

None of the president's advisers have forgotten the firestorm that engulfed Obama during the campaign when inflammatory sermons by Wright, Obama's longtime spiritual mentor at Trinity United Church of Christ in Chicago, were made public.

You know, it’s rare that I get to bear witness to a celebrity in a Washington Post article. But Cary Cash is a very old friend of mine. He and I went to Navy Chaplain School together in Newport, RI back in the mid-nineties. We spent nearly every waking hour together.

Cary is one of the kindest, most inspiring human beings I have ever known. He is one of the most likable individuals I have ever met. He has one of the deepest faiths I have ever seen. I actually think this country is in much better hands than before I read this article. The fact that the President is hearing Cary speak actually will make me sleep better tonight.

But for the record, I remember him more like 6’1” 220lbs.
And yeah, he does have Johnny Cash’s eyes.

‘night all!

Not much point in preaching to the converted.

Oh?

I guess I waste my time going to church on Sunday. < /sarc>

Exactly. Miracles can and do happen. May the Lord fill Obama, convict his heart. Now that would be an awesome miracle
Headline: “President gives his heart to Christ and apologizes to the Nation for his ‘blindness’!

Plus, a narcissist like Obama relishes the fact that it’s all about him, and that, in the end, he is the chaplain’s boss.

Very Romanesque...

My prayer is that, whatever the motivation of the listener, that the historical Jesus Christ - found in the Scriptures - would be preached and the Gospel take hold.

His word never returns to Him empty, but always accomplishes the sovereign purpose for which it was sent.

May God’s word bring about salvation for Obama, and revival to America!

Small world. He and I were classmates at the Citadel and attended East Cooper Baptist Church in Mount Pleasant for a few months after graduation.

I didn’t know him as well as you, but more of an acquaintance.

Military chaplains do not choose their own assignments. A southern baptist chaplain going to Camp David would certainly come under a lot of scrutiny, but he would have been one of a dozen or so looked at.

In short, he was simply at his duty assignment, and totally outside his control is who shows up for worship service.

You guys are right, I know, and I surely thank you.

Though it’s hard to pray for one who would...IS destroying our nation.

God give me strength and show me the way....

Thanks again.

Nicely summarized. I pray that the seed of God’s Word and the conviction of the Holy Spirit will effect a great change of heart in Mr. Obama.

That is pretty amazing and really kind of adds value to this website when a random news story can be put on the site and several folks can step forward to give eyewitness accounts.

Example: Let’s say FreeRepublic were around during the Kennedy Assassination...we’d have folks writing in saying “I’m on the second floor of the Depository”. Someone would blackberry in, “Some guy dressed up like a cop just walked behind the fence up here on this knoll.”

I started reading this site back during Monica Lewinski as I was hungry for some more honest information since I could smell lies coming from the White House. Since then, a lot more people who have a lot more access have lurked, lingered and even donated to FR. I wouldn’t be surprised if the president has come on here to read our postings.

I was really struck by 9/11. I used to toggle the site between trades when I worked at Lehman Brothers. As I experienced the sound of the first plane crashing into the WTC next door that day, I was seeing the first reports on here and listening to CNBC covering it...it was all surreal. We turned off the monitors and headed to the Staten Island Ferry before the second plane hit. We were at Castle Clinton when the second plane flew over us.

Late that night, safely home in New Jersey, I relived the entire thing minute by minute on FR. Sad, sick, alittle scared but thinking “what an amazing site this is...”

Cheers,
J

Everyone knows The Obammunist pays no attention to what's said in church. He could spend 20 years in this church and deny he ever heard a sermon.

This story is a self serving diversion by the Hussein administration.

Exactly. That’s why we need to pray for Obama and Michelle’s salvation. Sounds like he’s hearing the Word. Pray he really HEARS and responds to this pastor’s message.

“The book also offers an unflattering assessment of Islam, which Cash views as a flawed faith.”

Hannity is complaining about his choice of pastor tonight.

Sounds like the man speaks the truth. I wish he could get through to Obama. But I don't believe Obama is going to change his stripes this late in life. I think saying he likes this guy is politically motivated to appeal to Christians whose vote he's losing.

"Exactly."

They sure have been going out of their way in the last couple of weeks for the diversion trick.

Diversion from Socialized Medicine. That could still be The Obammunist's Waterloo.

What do they want on the news? His new church? Hillary cutting deals with the Rooskies? Troops in Afghanistan? Dancing with Latinos? Don't ask dont tell protests in DC?

Hours and hours of the Colorado backyard UFO hoax?
