Hi Alamo-Girl, I can recall only a few times in my life that I felt this level of anguish. One time God responded with a wonderful miracle. Can we work ourselves up to this anguish or is it something the Holy Spirit starts?

I don't see how anything can happen in the life of a Christian unless either God did it or permitted it.

But ye are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if so be that the Spirit of God dwell in you. Now if any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his. - Romans 8:9

And we need it all.

And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to [his] purpose. - Romans 8:28

For instance, God could have "poofed" the Hebrews directly from Egypt to the Promised Land (either on earth or in heaven) - but instead we see them led to the Red Sea with the Egyptians closing in on them.

They needed that. It was their opportunity to love Him, to believe Him, to trust Him. And they had many other opportunities.

As do we.

On the part of God's adoption children, certainly; on God's part, none at all.

After all, some kids really, really, really need to touch the stove to know it is hot.

God's permissive will is gracious enough to handle the errors we kids make and provide a means of growth through the experience. Sometimes it takes a spanking.
