Married Priests Practiced Celibacy
Rome Reports ^ | March 8, 2010 | Rome Reports

Married or single priests from the early stages of Christianity practiced celibacy, according to a Vatican archaeologist.

During the first four centuries, married priests would renounce having intimate relationships with their wives, but they needed their the approval of their spouse.

So I take it you don't allow single men to be called, nor infertile men to be called, and a "bishop" of yours who loses his wife next loses his job. Right?

Unlike some, I don't make up my own rules. I read them in the Bible.

Not that God has to explain himself, but if you want to understand why He made this rule, I suggest you consult the Bible...

"one who rules his own house well, having his children in submission with all reverence
(for if a man does not know how to rule his own house, how will he take care of the church of God?)"

The Bible teaches differently:

Apparently you haven't read all of the Bible.

"Perhaps you should re-read what you wrote. The Bible says one thing. Catholicism says another."

How can you profess to know what the Catholic Church says when you so obviously have never read its Catechism or its Encyclicals? Here is a clue; just because the Rev. Billy-Bob Rolex preached what he thinks the Catholic Church says (between the healin' and the plate passin', but after the snake handlin') don't make it so.

" I read them in the Bible."

Would that be the golden tablet bible the Holy Spirit guided you in finding and translating or the bible given you by God through the Apostolic Tradition of the Catholic Church?

Is that any way to talk about Campion and Houghton M? They're the ones whose Catholicism disagrees with the Bible. If they're misrepresenting your particular brand of Catholicism, you might want to straighten them out on their errors.

306-Council of Elvira, Spain, decree #43: a priest who sleeps with his wife the night before Mass will lose his job.

Council of Elvira met from 295-302 AD.

Canon 43:

43. In accordance with the Scripture we shall celebrate Pentecost and not continue the false practice [of celebrating the fortieth day after Easter rather than the fiftieth]. If one does not accept this practice, it will be considered a new heresy.

Try again and this time don't be so lazy in conducting your research.

Celibacy of the Catholic priesthood is an administrative policy, it is not based in Scripture nor does it have to be.

Celibacy is a discipline and is indeed based on the teaching of Scripture.

"I read them in the Bible."

Would that be...

It would be the same Bible you have, and you can read the same commands I'm reading. Will you or not?

"Try again and this time don't be so lazy in conducting your research."

Are your research and comprehension skills so poor or your work ethic so lazy that you believe that the only source of the proclamation of the Council of Elvira is the one used by RnMomof7 who posted the quote?

The apostles were not priests in the temple, as you well know.

“They chose to give up their conjugal life together.”

IOW they stopped having sex. I stand by my original statement.

Ithought we were talking about Peter.

He was not a temple priest. Just a plain old fisherman.

We were discussing St. Peter.

Why is it so hard to believe that he and other associates of Jesus enjoyed marital sex?

Celibacy can also become selfish and barren.

Title of the article - “Married Priests Practiced Celibacy”

What I said - “I can’t imagine that. Being married to someone, having sex and then BAM, they decide that neither of us are having sex...”

What you said - “Imagine actually knowing what celibacy means and feeling foolish...try hard and it might happen.”

So go ahead and tell me how black is white, left is right, up is down and so forth. I’ll happily read your answer in the morning.

"So go ahead and tell me how black is white, left is right, up is down and so forth."

In the context of the Catholic clergy chastity simply means to remain unmarried. Chaste means to refrain from sex.

Show me the word “chaste” or “chastity” in the following statement. Thank you.

Married Priests Practiced Celibacy Chastity.

To be celibate is to be unmarried. To be chaste is to forego sex.

Facts about Council of Elvira: celibacy, as discussed in celibacy: Islam, Judaism, and Christianity:

...was particularly wrong for those who officiated at the altar was assimilated by Christians, and it thus became common for ordained men to give up sexual relations with their wives. The regional Council of Elvira in Spain (c. ad 306) decreed that all priests and bishops, married or not, should abstain from sexual relations.
