Is this the face of Jesus Christ?Figure of crucified man on Shroud comes to life
WND ^ | March 24th, 2010

The world will have an extraordinary opportunity to look upon an undistorted, never-before-seen, moving 3-D portrait of a man who many think is the crucified Jesus Christ.

In just one week, graphic experts will bring to life an imprint on the holy relic known as the Shroud of Turin, believed by millions to be the burial shroud of Christ.

The Shroud of Turin bears the full-body, back-and-front image of a crucified man that is said to closely resemble the New Testament description of the passion and death of Christ. The 14-foot cloth long has posed mysteries because of its age and its negative image of a bloodstained and battered man who had been crucified. Believers claim it to be the miraculous image of Jesus, formed as he rose from the dead.

The History Channel will air "The Real Face of Jesus?," a special two-hour event that premieres March 30 at 9 p.m. EST. It aims to bring the world as close as it has ever come to seeing what Jesus may have actually looked like.

Since he was so badly beaten it is hard to say what He really looked like. The bible says he was beaten beyond recognition.

I have been a Christian for about 15 years now but I never paid much attention to the shroud because I didn’t care whether it was legit or not, my faith was already sealed by other means. However, seeing this image for the first time last year all I could say was WOW!

Three-Dimensional Hologram Also featured in the film, The Fabric of Time, is a three-dimensional, anatomically accurate hologram of a crucified man. Working independently of Piczek, a team of Dutch scientists led by Dr. Petrus Soons used laser technology to convert two-dimensional photographic negatives of the image on the Shroud. Among the several discoveries from the holographic image was the identification of the two coins placed over the eyes. These appear to be “widow’s mites,” minted in 29 A.D. in the reign of Tiberius (and which, due to their diminutive value, were not circulated outside of Israel.) The DVD copies of The Fabric of Time include 3-D glasses to better view and appreciate the holographic images.

The inherited factors of inhabitants of a given region change little over time without much outside factors such as war, intermarriage and famine/diseases. People were much shorter then than now. IIRC, the figure on the shroud is over six feet tall, which would practically make him a giant among the populace of the first century, including the Romans. According to first century Josephus, in his description of Jesus, he was not unlike anyone else in the crowd, which fits with the description of the prophecy of Isaiah:

Isaiah 53

1 Who has believed our report?
And to whom has the arm of the LORD been revealed?
2 For He shall grow up before Him as a tender plant,
And as a root out of dry ground.
He has no form or comeliness;
And when we see Him,
There is no beauty that we should desire Him.
3 He is despised and rejected by men,
A Man of sorrows and acquainted with grief.
And we hid, as it were, our faces from Him;
He was despised, and we did not esteem Him.
4 Surely He has borne our griefs
And carried our sorrows;
Yet we esteemed Him stricken,
Smitten by God, and afflicted.
5 But He was wounded for our transgressions,
He was bruised for our iniquities;
The chastisement for our peace was upon Him,
And by His stripes we are healed.
6 All we like sheep have gone astray;
We have turned, every one, to his own way;
And the LORD has laid on Him the iniquity of us all.
7 He was oppressed and He was afflicted,
Yet He opened not His mouth;
He was led as a lamb to the slaughter,
And as a sheep before its shearers is silent,
So He opened not His mouth.
8 He was taken from prison and from judgment,
And who will declare His generation?
For He was cut off from the land of the living;
For the transgressions of My people He was stricken.
9 And they[a] made His grave with the wicked—
But with the rich at His death,
Because He had done no violence,
Nor was any deceit in His mouth.
10 Yet it pleased the LORD to bruise Him;
He has put Him to grief.
When You make His soul an offering for sin,
He shall see His seed, He shall prolong His days,
And the pleasure of the LORD shall prosper in His hand.
11 He shall see the labor of His soul,[b]and be satisfied.
By His knowledge My righteous Servant shall justify many,
For He shall bear their iniquities.
12 Therefore I will divide Him a portion with the great,
And He shall divide the spoil with the strong,
Because He poured out His soul unto death,
And He was numbered with the transgressors,
And He bore the sin of many,
And made intercession for the transgressors.

True, but he also was resurrected and that had to include a restoration of his body to a great extent. When he appeared before the disciples after the resurrection He was whole and they recognized him.

Yes, the Bible states that He was beaten and scourged. His back would have looked like hamburger and his face would have been swollen beyond human recognition.................

How?

The Jews of Jesus time knew what tribe they were from....

When the Jews were dispersed they inter-married with gentiles, so I don’t know how we could really have a accurate image of the Jews in Israel during the times of Jesus.

I hope I can get this online -

I get most everything online - had my satellite turned off Jan 09 - and don't miss it a bit...’

But this I have to see. I've been following the Shroud since the early ‘60s. And as a portrait artist - approach it mainly from the art angle.

Here is one link you might find interesting:

The Description of Publius Lentullus

The following was taken from a manuscript in the possession of Lord Kelly, and in his library, and was copied from an original letter of Publius Lentullus at Rome. It being the usual custom of Roman Governors to advertise the Senate and people of such material things as happened in their provinces in the days of Tiberius Caesar, Publius Lentullus, President of Judea, wrote the following epistle to the Senate concerning the Nazarene called Jesus.

"There appeared in these our days a man, of the Jewish Nation, of great virtue, named Yeshua [Jesus], who is yet living among us, and of the Gentiles is accepted for a Prophet of truth, but His own disciples call Him the Son of God- He raiseth the dead and cureth all manner of diseases. A man of stature somewhat tall, and comely, with very reverent countenance, such as the beholders may both love and fear, his hair of (the colour of) the chestnut, full ripe, plain to His ears, whence downwards it is more orient and curling and wavering about His shoulders. In the midst of His head is a seam or partition in His hair, after the manner of the Nazarenes. His forehead plain and very delicate; His face without spot or wrinkle, beautified with a lovely red; His nose and mouth so formed as nothing can be reprehended; His beard thickish, in colour like His hair, not very long, but forked; His look innocent and mature; His eyes grey, clear, and quick- In reproving hypocrisy He is terrible; in admonishing, courteous and fair spoken; pleasant in conversation, mixed with gravity. It cannot be remembered that any have seen Him Laugh, but many have seen Him Weep. In proportion of body, most excellent; His hands and arms delicate to behold. In speaking, very temperate, modest, and wise. A man, for His singular beauty, surpassing the children of men"

The letter from Pontius Pilate to Tiberius Caesar

This is a reprinting of a letter from Pontius Pilate to Tiberius Caesar describing the physical appearance of Jesus. Copies are in the Congressional Library in Washington, D.C.

TO TIBERIUS CAESAR:

A young man appeared in Galilee preaching with humble unction, a new law in the Name of the God that had sent Him. At first I was apprehensive that His design was to stir up the people against the Romans, but my fears were soon dispelled. Jesus of Nazareth spoke rather as a friend of the Romans than of the Jews. One day I observed in the midst of a group of people a young man who was leaning against a tree, calmly addressing the multitude. I was told it was Jesus. This I could easily have suspected so great was the difference between Him and those who were listening to Him. His golden colored hair and beard gave to his appearance a celestial aspect. He appeared to be about 30 years of age. Never have I seen a sweeter or more serene countenance. What a contrast between Him and His bearers with their black beards and tawny complexions! Unwilling to interrupt Him by my presence, I continued my walk but signified to my secretary to join the group and listen. Later, my secretary reported that never had he seen in the works of all the philosophers anything that compared to the teachings of Jesus. He told me that Jesus was neither seditious nor rebellious, so we extended to Him our protection. He was at liberty to act, to speak, to assemble and to address the people. This unlimited freedom provoked the Jews -- not the poor but the rich and powerful.

Later, I wrote to Jesus requesting an interview with Him at the Praetorium. He came. When the Nazarene made His appearance I was having my morning walk and as I faced Him my feet seemed fastened with an iron hand to the marble pavement and I trembled in every limb as a guilty culprit, though he was calm. For some time I stood admiring this extraordinary Man. There was nothing in Him that was repelling, nor in His character, yet I felt awed in His presence. I told Him that there was a magnetic simplicity about Him and His personality that elevated Him far above the philosophers and teachers of His day.

Now, Noble Sovereign, these are the facts concerning Jesus of Nazareth and I have taken the time to write you in detail concerning these matters. I say that such a man who could convert water into wine, change death into life, disease into health; calm the stormy seas, is not guilty of any criminal offense and as others have said, we must agree -- truly this is the Son of God.

Your most obedient servant,
Pontius Pilate

The Emerald of Caesar

This Likeness of Jesus was copied from a portrait carved on an emerald by order of Tiberius Caesar, which emerald the Emperor of the Turks afterwards gave out of the Treasury of Constantinople to Pope Innocent VIII for the redemption of his brother, taken captive by the Christians.

The 'lost sheep of the House of Israel' were NOT there when Jesus walked this earth. (Matthew 10:5-6) They had been sent into captivity hundreds and hundreds of years before the event of Christ walking in a flesh body. What had returned was the House of Judah which also included the tribe of Benjamin, which is the tribe that Paul states he was.

This is a interesting read!

According to the nature of event horizons the dead body must have left its image on the two surfaces of the event horizons. At the time of the explosion (when time stopped) of the event horizons these images were ejected onto both sides of the Shroud, with the body hovering parallel to the event horizons.

This explains why the image shows a dead man, not the risen body, and also explains why the image is negative (went from a positive body image to the negative image like a camera film negative). This indicates how the image got onto the cloth.”

Thank you for that information ... it seems to correlate with other scientific studies on the Shroud Story site.

I've heard a lot of people say this. But ask yourself this question, IF the Shroud of Turin IS the burial shroud of our Lord that means that HE put His image on there and if HE did it He did it for a REASON, it was not accidental.

It is also worth noting that although the the complete history of the Shroud is unknown, it's history since the 16th century is verifiable. NOBODY has been able to recreate the image using 21st century technology, let alone 16th century technology.

Barrie Schwortz has the most extensive web site on The Shroud.

He was on the first team, in 1978, that was allowed to examine it - went as a skeptic - it has turned into a life long study.
