1963 letter indicates former pope knew of abuse

LOS ANGELES – The head of a Roman Catholic order that specialized in the treatment of pedophile priests visited with the then-pope nearly 50 years ago and followed up with a letter recommending the removal of pedophile priests from ministry, according to a copy of the letter released Wednesday.

In the Aug. 27, 1963 letter, the head of the New Mexico-based Servants of the Holy Paraclete tells the pope he recommends removing pedophile priests from active ministry and strongly urges defrocking repeat offenders. The letter, written by the Rev. Gerald M.C. Fitzgerald, appears to have been drafted at the request of the pope and summarizes Fitzgerald's thoughts on problem priests after his Vatican visit.

A message left with the Paraclete order at one of their two existing facilities in Missouri was not returned. A number for the second facility was disconnected.

Actually most of them indicate that laws are being changed to make it impossible for abusive teachers to move around and find new employment as teachers.

... which implies that they could do so before.

“Teachers are arrested and put in jail and they become registered sex offenders and lose their teacher certification in most cases.”

Nope.

Then you surely agree that the way this Church has handled their particular problem is pathetic. How could you not?

Overall? Sure.

Much of it could have been avoided if bishops would have made more of an effort to keep homosexuals out of the priesthood (in obedience to, e.g., the 1962 Vatican directive).

Instead, there was a period when some seminaries in the US (with the tacit -- if not overt -- approval of the bishops who continued to send their seminarians there) made what amounted to an effort to keep anyone except homosexuals out of the priesthood. (See the book "Goodbye, Good Men" for the gruesome details.)

In the specific instances talked about in the press today?

You can ding the Pope for letting Hullerman be appointed to a parish when Hullerman was being treated for being a molester in 1980. That's fair.

Hullerman was re-appointed in 1986, after he was convicted in court, but then-Abp. Ratzinger had been in Rome for 5 years at that point and wasn't involved.

As for the Wisconsin case, he did nothing wrong at all.

His deputy suggested at one point that the canonical process be stopped because the molester would be dead before it could be completed. It was only a suggestion, and was rejected. His office took 8 months to reply to the initial letter about the case, but Milwaukee didn't need his permission to begin the canonical process anyway.

Milwaukee, on the other hand, sat on the case and did nothing, not for 8 months, but for 19 years. But because the (now thankfully retired!) prelate involved is a liberal and a homosexual, you won't read any complaints about that in the MSM.

The very first article that comes up talks about teachers who are serial molesters, how they can keep their teaching certificates during the appeals process which can go on for 2-3 years, how some of them even get jobs at new schools with the help of their former bosses, how some states don't bother to do any background checks at all, etc.

If you don’t believe there is pressure on public schools, then I don’t know where you live.

The difference is that no one is thus claiming that public schools are by their very nature evil and are collectively guilty of the crimes of a minority of their members. Nor do we see reporting about abuse in the public schools beyond individual cases or which try to leave the impression that abuse by teachers is common place and is actively sanctioned by administrators. If you want to go after the individuals, priests or bishops, who are guilty then go for it. But to try to paint the entire Church as guilty is a sin against one of those silly little Commandment: Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbor.

I wonder if the cases of sexual abuse in public schools have been going down for the last few decades like it has been in the Church.

Is the letter even authentic? The NYTime “letter” in the Murphy (Milwaukee) case, we now know, was forged.

FReepers are notorious for spotting frauds of this kind. But anti-Catholic Freepers don’t even bother to ask the question.

You can’t trust a d!!n thing that the media say about this issue. Evil things were done by many priests and bishops. But just because that is true, doesn’t mean I will believe ANYTHING published about this in the MSM until it’s been properly vetted. Jeffrey Anderson and the NYTimes posted a forged handwritten letter about the Vatican’s handling of the 1996 Milwaukee case.

What part of the “NYTimes is lying filthy scum” don’t you get?

Criticize the Catholic Church all you want IF and WHEN you have trustworthy facts. Until then, suspend judgment and find out facts.

Here’s the most recent FR report on the NYTimes fraudulent letter. At least 9 other FR threads have deal with the same evidence. It seems to have escaped your attention.

Here’s the original article in the Anchorage diocesan newspaper:

The Telegraph has published this debunking but the NYSlimes ignores it. You ignored it.

Wake up.

Agreed. And none of us debunking the present NYSlimes attack on the Vatican deny that terrible and evil abuse took place.

The point is that the NYTimes doesn’t give a damn about the victims. DOESN’T GIVE A DAMN. Do you get that? The NYT doesn’t care one iota for the pain and suffering of the victims.

The NYTimes and Hitchens are gunning for Benedict XVI. They have ZERO, do you get that, ZERO evidence to show that Benedict is to blame. As the Anchorage priest who exposed the NYTimes letter as a fraud pointed out, Benedict has done more than any other single person to reform the systemic problems that led to DIOCESAN bishops covering up the abuse.

Blast away at the evils done by priests and the bishops who covered for them. But no one has adduced a shred of evidence to show that the Vatican or Benedict XVI is to blame for it. The plaintiffs in this Kentucky trial are grasping at straws, concocting fantasies out of the air.

How does that help the pain and suffering of the victims?

So, between 1996 and 1998 the Catholic Church knew intimate details about a serial child sex abuser for two whole years and never once reported it to the authorities.

The Catholic Church acted as a law unto itself, and kept this criminal out of jail for two whole years, all the while knowing that he had done these heinous things to defenseless children.

Disgusting doesn’t even begin to cover it.

Hmmm ... it’s all quiet and civil toward Islam right before Rammadan. Wonder why?’

You wrote:

“Look folks, I’m NOT anti-Catholic! I’m NOT anti-Pope! I’m just sick of the cover-up, lack of accountability and refusal of people to see the systemic problem that plagues the church.”

When someone consistently (and obviously deliberately) misrepresents things about the Catholic Church or about Catholics how can he NOT be anti-Catholic?

“WRONG. The teacher goes to prison and the school district gets sued, thank you for playing, please try again.”

Uh, you might want to ask some of the old timers about “pass the trash”.
Also try googling:
“The predator in the classroom: it’s called “pass the trash”: a staffer molests a student, then makes a deal to resign and move on—to another unsuspecting district. A shocking report on the dangerous games schools play, and why you can’t rely on background checks. (Sex abuse scandal).”
