Over the past two years, economic hard times have loomed as large at Washington National Cathedral as the Gothic spires that grace the city's skyline.
The cathedral has slashed its budget from $27 to $13 million, outsourcing its gift shop operation and shuttering its popular greenhouse and its continuing education college for clergy. Three rounds of layoffs have reduced the staff from 170 to 70, including, at the end of this month, the cathedral's conservator and the liturgist who oversaw the April memorial service for civil rights pioneer Dorothy Height.

Ping. Sad to see they’re going to have to let a lot of their classic Books of Common Prayer go as part of this fire sale. Actually even the 1979 prayer book services at National Cathedral have been “adapted” well beyond the rubrics on a typical Sunday morning.
Flash!: President obama still hasn't found a church to attend regularly.
Nonsense! It isn't the economy that has driven everyone away from the Episcopal church, it is the anti-Christian activities of that church.
It is all part of the Left’s “Assault on Christianity.” Maybe Obama will establish a National Mosque.
I thought he had already turned the White House into one...
I’d buy something, and would proudly display it and tell everyone where I got it. Those books should go to people who will cherish them.
It makes perfect sense. Since the “Spirit” is doing a new thing, anything old is of course patriarchal, homophobic and oppressive and must be eliminated. These people don’t give a darn about tradition or history.
You’re joking, but you’re not too far off.
Well said.
They have become the Church of the High Holy Lesbian - seems they refuse to even talk about Jesus at the National Cathedral, so I doubt they even have a congregation any longer.
About 25 years ago, I worked in a building that shared office space with the headquarters of a very Prominent Protestant Denomination.
One Day, as I was taking some trash out to the dumpster, I found boxes of old books being discarded.
I grabbed the boxes and brought home several King James and RSV Bibles, Greek and Hebrew Interlinear Texts, Complete Matthew Henry Commentaries, Strongs Concordance, Multiple Bible Encyclopediae and Dictionaries, Prayer Books and Hymnals, and other rare and old Bible-centered Books.
God only KNOWS what the denomination is using NOW!

Speak the truth in love. Eph 4:15
Good idea.
The cathedral's chief operating officer, Kathleen Cox, said the possible book sale, as well as measures such as eliminating financial support of a global poverty program ...
Uh-huh.
One interesting part of the architecture--added very late (in the 80s or 90s) to me symbolizes TEC's direction:
This sculpture above the main entrance to the cathdral is called, ironically, I think, "Creation" even though it bears no resemblance to the biblical account.
It does however bear a resemblence to this account in the Apocalypse of St. John (Revelation):
"And if anyone's name was not found written in the book of life, he was thrown into the lake of fire." (Rev 20:15)
I don’t know that Church, but it’s almost certainly with a dynamic orthodox/evangelical pastor and vestry. There are a few of those within TEC that have been allowed to survive and thrive...
It’s almost unheard of for a typical liberal mainline congregation to grow a lot. Without the good news of Jesus, church becomes a rather unexciting social club.
If the main message of the service is, “you’re a good person, now go out and be a good person to others...” one can easily sleep in on Sunday mornings, without needing to hear such pap.
