That is a wonderful prayer, full of the humility of Christ. Well worth devoting oneself to.

You would have guessed right. The word can also mean prudence. It is translated "chastity" here to demonstrate self control. There a many Greek words with shades of meaning which don't translate into English well. The final word of the Our Father, πονηρός (as in ἀπὸ τοῦ πονηροῦ), is a good example of this.

That’s excellent.
Oh my. I’m going to be in a few minutes, and when I wake up, it’ll be Lent.
I feel like I’m going to be climbing a BIG mountain.
We need to keep praying for the separated brethren, as you know. The wrath has many in its grip.

O Lord and Master of my life, give me not the spirit of sloth, idle curiosity, lust for power and idle talk.
But grant unto me, Thy servant, a spirit of chastity, humility, patience and love.

Maybe, as off-year elections approach and as we in the RF continue talking past one another, just maybe it’s time to crank this thread up again.
Fatima I pinged you because some posts back you asked if this thread were ego stroking or prayer, and you said it had done no good. I’m not so sure.
Of course, prayer isn’t magic. We can’t say it didn’t “work” just because we didn’t get what we asked for. Maybe peace in the RF has to be preceded by peace in our hearts.
But I DO think some bridges seem to have been built.

Bumping this thread. I believe we need to do some additional praying for the Religion Forum. Some of the threads are degenerating into word-wars.

Thanks for the ping! I just copied the Greek prayer from the 1280s to my journal. It can be a poster for Lent! Unnngh, that “idle curiousity” ...

I Corithians 12 ... As a body is one though it has many parts, and all the parts of the body, though many, are one body, so also Christ.
And the gospel from Luke 4 ...
Jesus returned to Galilee ... went into the synagogue on the sabbath day. He stood up to read and was handed a scroll of the prophet Isaiah ...
He unrolled the scroll and found the passage where it was written:
The Spirit of the Lord is upon me,
because he has anointed me
to bring glad tidings to the poor.
He has sent me to proclaim liberty to captives
and recovery of sight to the blind,
to let the oppressed go free,
and to proclaim a year acceptable to the Lord.
Rolling up the scroll, he handed it back to the attendant and sat down,
and the eyes of all in the synagogue looked intently at him.
He said to them,
“Today this Scripture passage is fulfilled in your hearing.”
This was said to Jesus' Jewish community in the synagogue. Not to any of us Gentiles. But our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ fulfilled the Father's plan to present His promise of salvation to the entire world.
Since we were not God's original Chosen People, and perhaps somewhat similar to ceasing the requirement of non-Jews to be circumcised, far be it from us to place restrictions on our Christian brethen who are not Catholic too? Is that not the task of the Holy Spirit?
