Litany of Humility

Rafael Cardinal Merry del Val

O Jesus! meek and humble of heart, Hear me.

From the desire of being esteemed, Deliver me, Jesus.
From the desire of being loved, Deliver me, Jesus.
From the desire of being extolled, Deliver me, Jesus.
From the desire of being honored, Deliver me, Jesus.
From the desire of being praised, Deliver me, Jesus.
From the desire of being preferred to others, Deliver me, Jesus.
From the desire of being consulted, Deliver me, Jesus.
From the desire of being approved, Deliver me, Jesus.

From the fear of being humiliated, Deliver me, Jesus.
From the fear of being despised, Deliver me, Jesus.
From the fear of suffering rebukes, Deliver me, Jesus.
From the fear of being calumniated, Deliver me, Jesus.
From the fear of being forgotten, Deliver me, Jesus.
From the fear of being ridiculed, Deliver me, Jesus.
From the fear of being wronged, Deliver me, Jesus.
From the fear of being suspected, Deliver me, Jesus.

That others may be loved more than I, Jesus, grant me the grace to desire it.
That others may be esteemed more than I, Jesus, grant me the grace to desire it.
That, in the opinion of the world, others may increase and I may decrease,Jesus, grant me the grace to desire it.
That others may be chosen and I set aside, Jesus, grant me the grace to desire it.
That others may be praised and I unnoticed, Jesus, grant me the grace to desire it.
That others may be preferred to me in everything, Jesus, grant me the grace to desire it.
That others may become holier than I,
provided that I may become
as holy as I should, Jesus, grant me the grace to desire it.

Closing Prayer

Dominicus Gabriel Mariae

O most gracious Lord Jesus:
To redeem an undeserving humanity
You gave up everything you had.

In your mercy, grant us the grace
of despising all things but you
and your love

That we may know the joy
you brought to us
through your dolorous Passion
and Death,

Who live and reign in might and bliss
with the Father and the Holy Spirit,
One God, in everlasting glory.

Good morning. A post on another thread from a poster to whom I do not respond, ever, reminded me to come back here!

I took half a pill last night and the other half just now. Still had a rocky night. But we’ll see tonight. If I’m up at 0230 tomorrow I’m emailing my doc, who will probably be in Honduras doing good works.

I’m serious about going the herbal and diet route next. It’s just God’s little way of calling me to a life of penance.

Right here is where I’m supposed to thank Him for loving me so much. ;-)

I think I’ll ask Him for a wiser and better heart instead, because thanks is not the very first thing that come to me right now. In fact, it’s WAY down the list, after coffee.

Wine and naps are my favorite meds ...

Wherefore two of the great images of heaven are a feast and rest.

A 79 year old and I were giving each other "organ recitals" (My liver, my prostate, my heart ...) and concluded that the mercy of old age is that it heightens our longing for heaven and our contempt for death. ("You call this living?")

Ah, very true.

I'll pray for you to experience better health.

Good (yawn) morning.

This is your still have BAD side-effects to the newest meds 10:30 AM wakeup call.

("Put not your trust in pharmacists" -- I'm pretty sure that's in the Psalms somewhere.)

Still, Glory to God! May He hear our prayers and work such wonders in our hearts that men may see our good works and glorify Him in heaven.

This is the 12th day of the Noxena. I need your prayers more and more, and I trust that God, hearing mine, sends and will send blessings to you.

For people newly added to my list. Of COURSE you can ask to be off the list! And no doubt you're wondering what a "Noxena" is. That's okay, so are we. We're finding out together.

A little background: Some of us thought that our own fractiousness and pride contributed to the bad vibes of the Religion Forum. So we thought, "We know what to do when we're messed up on the side of the road: Call for the Good Samaritan!" And so this prayer group started.

Originally we were going to pray together for 9 days, from July 1 through July 9.

In Catholic tradition (gag, koff, hack) a commitment to nine days of prayer involves a remembering the nine days from the Ascension to the Pentecost and is called a "novena" with the Latin root "novem" meaning "nine."

One of our number suggested s/he might not be able to hit it every day. That's FINE. "Bear one another's burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ." We carry each other. Even if I pray it everyday, my heart is so stony that I rely on your hearts of love to make up my deficiencies, while maybe some of you can rely on my ornery persistence to make up for your being unable to pray on this or that day.

SO, anyway, I suggested "some-ena". And then somebody said he thought Novena was a skin cream.

So now we are all praying a Noxena.

Okay, Maybe you had to be there.

ANYWAY, it is as clear as clear can be that when I prize getting my "propers" from man and forget that God has given me what is proper to Him and undeserved by me, namely: Love and Mercy, that I am guaranteed to be a massive jerk. So, on the off-chance that any of you have the same affliction, let's pray for the grace of humility.

Have a blessed day!

Every med I’ve ever taken for blood pressure has had side effects. (*sigh*)

One of them gave me extremely vivid dreams...too strange for words.

May God bless you with nice normal pressure, and no side effects.

It seems both lisinopril and norvasc give me dreams. It is like they weaken slightly what Freud would call the ego, and Plato the charioteer.

With norvasc, I don't even have to be asleep. If I but doze, my mind goes in surreal places and the first night I had auditory hallucinations which would wake me RIGHT up. "Who is calling me? What heavy thing just fell off a high shelf?

At least it's not boring ....

My cholesterol and BP (okay, why did I type BO first?) seem pretty unrelated to my weight. The BP just came on last summer, while the first time I was spoken severely to about my cholesterol was while I was a vegetarian.

Some of us got lousy genes, evidently. Not so much thorn in the flesh as gunk in the arteries.

His grace is sufficient for me.

Amen.

Just a few verses for your edification today.

Psalm 22:26
The meek shall eat and be satisfied: they shall praise the LORD that seek him: your heart shall live for ever.

Proverbs 27:2
Let another man praise thee, and not thine own mouth; a stranger, and not thine own lips.

May we realize more every day that the Lord alone is worthy of all praise. Without him we can do nothing. Have a blessed week!

Slightly humorous, yet still illuminating:
(sources for all three quotations are unknown)

*****

If you are right, take the humble side — you will help the other fellow.
If you are wrong, take the humble side — and you will help yourself.

*****

When we become aware of our humility, we’ve lost it.

*****

Be it ever so humble, there’s no opinion like one’s own.

LOL

Guilty as charged. I throw myself on the mercy of the humorous.

(But I do go to smart pastors and ask for mini-Inquisitions sometimes.)

I’m doing everything I can. I prayed a “flash novena” for you (Memorare x 9, recommended by Scott Hahn). I was hoping you’d feel better!

My kids are driving me insane. If I completely Lose It, someone’s last words will be, “But I thought I had ...” or “But I was just ...”
