Litany of Humility

Rafael Cardinal Merry del Val

O Jesus! meek and humble of heart, Hear me.

From the desire of being esteemed, Deliver me, Jesus.
From the desire of being loved, Deliver me, Jesus.
From the desire of being extolled, Deliver me, Jesus.
From the desire of being honored, Deliver me, Jesus.
From the desire of being praised, Deliver me, Jesus.
From the desire of being preferred to others, Deliver me, Jesus.
From the desire of being consulted, Deliver me, Jesus.
From the desire of being approved, Deliver me, Jesus.

From the fear of being humiliated, Deliver me, Jesus.
From the fear of being despised, Deliver me, Jesus.
From the fear of suffering rebukes, Deliver me, Jesus.
From the fear of being calumniated, Deliver me, Jesus.
From the fear of being forgotten, Deliver me, Jesus.
From the fear of being ridiculed, Deliver me, Jesus.
From the fear of being wronged, Deliver me, Jesus.
From the fear of being suspected, Deliver me, Jesus.

That others may be loved more than I, Jesus, grant me the grace to desire it.
That others may be esteemed more than I, Jesus, grant me the grace to desire it.
That, in the opinion of the world, others may increase and I may decrease,Jesus, grant me the grace to desire it.
That others may be chosen and I set aside, Jesus, grant me the grace to desire it.
That others may be praised and I unnoticed, Jesus, grant me the grace to desire it.
That others may be preferred to me in everything, Jesus, grant me the grace to desire it.
That others may become holier than I,
provided that I may become
as holy as I should, Jesus, grant me the grace to desire it.

Closing Prayer

Dominicus Gabriel Mariae

O most gracious Lord Jesus:
To redeem an undeserving humanity
You gave up everything you had.

In your mercy, grant us the grace
of despising all things but you
and your love

That we may know the joy
you brought to us
through your dolorous Passion
and Death,

Who live and reign in might and bliss
with the Father and the Holy Spirit,
One God, in everlasting glory.

Bless you a hundred times.

I bless God that he scourges me. It is a sign of His love.

I am content to have no clue what I am supposed to do.

But, ahem, I still have no clue what I am supposed to do.

I still have no clue what I am supposed to do.

Excellent summary.

I have a sheep question: We were discussing "wether" on another thread recently, and I wondered whether most male sheep are castrated, just as most male cattle are.

The weather here is hot and humid, just to complete a set of homophones.

Whether to wether ...

Some would say not in hot and humid weather, for fear of flies.

I did not castrate my males, but most sheep breeders do. It makes management easier because you don’t have to run them separately.

Also some maintain that intact males have a gamier flavor. I ate several of my rams though and I found the flavor very good. YMMV, I suppose.

You do risk slightly slowing their growth, both from the couple of days it takes to recover from the trauma and from the hormonal changes.

Day 19!

If we are abased, His glory shines all the more. Let us pray, therefore to seek and to find our joy not in ourselves, where our seeking will fail, but in Him.

Thanks, that was informative. “Wether” is a verb, too? Makes perfect sense, I guess, since “weather” is one.

Bubbas and Sissies in the Lord!

May the Grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with us all. (Saint Paul said that, and I like it.)

Have you noticed how the Spirit makes friends and families (He setteth the solitary in families) out of those who are estranged (All over Ephesians) merely through our praying together?

To me, part of the wonder of Ephesians is that Paul takes what might seem like a mere growth strategy and expounds it as part and parcel of the History of Salvation and of the mystery of God’s plan.

(I also like the part where it says the Ol’ Mizris has to do what I tell her, um, sort of, okay, not so much.)

Let us pray for the humility to abandon ourselves to the reconciling plan of God.

Brother Xzins: I thought you might want to think about joining us in prayer. There Are a lot of feelthy papists here, but it’s a non-denominational group. And you’d be very welcome.

I'd be honored to pray with you and your "papist" friends.

The Priesthood and the Holy Face

|

madre_maria_pierina_micheli_1.jpg

My friend, Msgr A.B.C., was kind enough to send me from Rome today, the text of a prayer for priests composed by the recently beatified Blessed Maria Pierina de Micheli (1890-1945). It was to Blessed Maria Pierina that Our Lord gave the scapular of His Holy Face, which later became the medal of the Holy Face distributed throughout the world. Blessed Maria Pierina died on 26 July 1945. Her liturgical memorial is celebrated on 11 September.

Prayer of Blessed Maria Pierina De Micheli for Priests

Eterno Padre,
offriamo il Santo Volto del Tuo Figlio Gesù
per le mani di Maria,
con l'intero generoso olocausto di tutte noi stesse
in riparazione di tanti peccati che si commettono,
specialmente della offese al SS. Sacramento dell'Altare.

Eternal Father,
we offer Thee, with the hands of Mary,
the Holy Face of Jesus, Thy Son,
and the entire generous holocaust
of all that we are,
in reparation for so many sins that are committed,
and, especially, for offenses against the Most Holy Sacrament of the Altar.
We make this offering, in a particular way,
so that Priests, by the holiness of their lives,
may show the world the adorable features of the Divine Countenance
shining with the light of truth and of love,
for the triumph of the Church,
and for the spread of the Kingdom.
Amen.

(Why do phrases which sound bombastic in English sound simply lovely in Italian?)

It's a lovely prayer. I worry that our dear not-Catholic brothers and sisters may be, well, caught up short by our florid and expansive language.

It is so interesting, the lovely humility of the "Lord, we just want to ..." prayer and the extravagance of so many Catholic prayers.

And, I am the one who delights in the simple prayers at the end of Mass. As in: Lord, May this service bring us closer to you. Amen. Boom. Period.

But this:

l'adorabile fisionomia del Divin Volto, irradiando la luce della verità e dell'amore
is simply lovely.

The beautiful features of the face of Jesus, all shining with the light of truth and love! Ah!

Day 21!

Three weeks!

Tomorrow is St Mary Magdalene’s day, as most Catholics reckon such things. Dominicans call her “the apostle to the apostles,” because she brought tidings of the Lord’s empty tomb to the Eleven.

She had been a demoniac and what an archaic friend of mine quaintly calls “a fallen woman.”

It is probably of her that our Lord said “... for she loved much,” since she showed the fruits of forgiveness in washing His sacred feet with her tears and drying them with her hair.

Forgiven, she loved much and brought to the Apostles the greatest news ever proclaimed.

Let us, therefore, pray for grace to remember always our undeserved forgiveness, to love much, to carry the Good News to a sorry world longing for it.

From Josemaria Escriva, H/T to The Philosopher Mom blog. (I'm not a fan or a reader of Escriva, but I can't escape the truth of the following, and how pridefulness plays its part:)

"675. It's true that he was a sinner. But don't pass so final a judgment. Have pity in your heart and don't forget that he may yet be an Augustine, while you remain just another mediocrity."
