US President Barack Obama blamed a "network of misinformation" for keeping alive persistent rumors that he is Muslim, but he shrugged off the misconception as being out of his control.
"There is a mechanism, a network of misinformation, that in a new media era can get churned out there constantly," Obama said in an interview with NBC television.
He said the recurring controversy was something he will not allow himself to spend too much time on, however.
"I'm not going to be worrying too much about whatever rumors are floating out there," Obama said.
"If I spend all my time chasing after that then I wouldn't get much done," the president said.
Opinion polls earlier this month showed that roughly one in five Americans wrongly believes Obama is a Muslim -- even though the US leader is a church-going Christian who repeatedly has spoken out about his faith.
The rumors, which circulate largely on the Internet, gathered steam after Obama waded into a controversy earlier this month over plans to build a mosque near the site of the World Trade Center bombing at Ground Zero.
Obama at an Iftar dinner, when Muslims break their fast during the month of Ramadan, defended the constitutional right of Muslims to build a mosque near the New York site of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks -- remarks which apparently confirmed the suspicions of some who believe he is an adherent of the Islamic faith.
He repeated the essence of those remarks to NBC on Sunday.
"If you can build a church on that site, if you can build a synagogue on that site or a Hindu Temple on that site, then we can't treat people of the Islamic faith differently, who are Americans -- who are American citizens," the US leader said.

I haven't heard of a church, synagogue or Hindu temple being built there and in fact a church that was there has been denied permission to rebuild.

He is, in fact, Muslim by cultural heritage, Socialist by personal conviction (at least Fabian, if not outright Marxist), and Christian by politically-convenient veneer. I think that's about the most charitable way I can put it.

It’s just my opinion, but I don’t believe Obama is a Christian or a Muslim. In fact, I don’t believe that he even believes in G-d. The “State” is his god.
No, I think his religion is Marxism. He uses whatever means necessary to get his Marxist ideology implemented.
He does (did) whatever was expedient to get to the position he has now. He is a true Marxist idealogue - that’s why he doesn’t care about what the American people think - he hates what America stood for spiritually, politically, and economically. His “religious” belief in Marxism peeked out when publicly declared that wanted to “bring fundamental ‘change’ to America”.
Whatever best suits that goal will be the motivating factor for why he does what he does.

Most people do not recognize that what happens in a mosque is sedition. Pure and simple. Islam is not just a “religion”, it is a cult. Larger than that though, it is a political system, it is it’s own government, a economic system (which includes funding new mosque construction), its judicial...all wrapped up in the word sharia. This is inclusive of its military (jihadis) all rolled into one with one intent ...and that is to rule wherever they take root. It is a invasive, systemic infection looking to take over the host once it has quantum.
This is not just a “religion”, but something that cloaks itself in those terms so it should not be given the same treatment contemplated under the first amendment. The Korans Sharia rules are to consume whatever government there is wherever it goes.
Islam is political, and it’s goal is to supplant and replace. Globally.

I have to agree with you MAexile that this guy is getting his facts wrong. Obama has not been in a church or professed his christian faith except in sound bites to the media. The only church he has attended is Rev. Wright’s and his “blame America for everything wrong in the world” message from the pulpit. I guess we should be thankful that we don’t live in a Muslim country as one of the tenets of Islam is to treat Christians as second class citizens or worse. Mistreatment of Christians in the West is minor in comparison, so I guess we accept the lesser of two evils as a blessing.

Imam Feisal Abdel Rauf claims that the U.S. constitution is Sharia compliant. Now let us examine below a few laws of Sharia to see how truthful Imam Rauf is:
1- Jihad, defined as “to war against non-Muslims to establish the religion,” is the duty of every Muslim and Muslim head of state (Caliph). Muslim Caliphs who refuse jihad are in violation of Sharia and unfit to rule.
2- A Caliph can hold office through seizure of power meaning through force.
3- A Caliph is exempt from being charged with serious crimes such as murder, adultery, robbery, theft, drinking and in some cases of rape.
4- A percentage of Zakat (charity money) must go towards jihad.
5- It is obligatory to obey the commands of the Caliph, even if he is unjust.

12- Sharia dictates death by stoning, beheading, amputation of limbs, flogging even for crimes of sin such as adultery.
13- Non-Muslims are not equal to Muslims under the law. They must comply to Islamic law if they are to remain safe. They are forbidden to marry Muslim women, publicly display wine or pork, recite their scriptures or openly celebrate their religious holidays or funerals. They are forbidden from building new churches or building them higher than mosques. They may not enter a mosque without permission. A non-Muslim is no longer protected if he leads a Muslim away from Islam.
14- It is a crime for a non-Muslim to sell weapons to someone who will use them against Muslims. Non-Muslims cannot curse a Muslim, say anything derogatory about Allah, the Prophet, or Islam, or expose the weak points of Muslims. But Muslims can curse non-Muslims.
15- A non-Muslim cannot inherit from a Muslim.
16- Banks must be Sharia compliant and interest is not allowed.
17- No testimony in court is acceptable from people of low-level jobs, such as street sweepers or bathhouse attendants. Women in low level jobs such as professional funeral mourners cannot keep custody of their children in case of divorce.
18- A non-Muslim cannot rule — even over a non-Muslim minority.
19- Homosexuality is punishable by death.
20- There is no age limit for marriage of girls. The marriage contract can take place anytime after birth and can be consummated at age 8 or 9.
21- Rebelliousness on the part of the wife nullifies the husband’s obligation to support her, gives him permission to beat her and keep her from leaving the home.
22- Divorce is only in the hands of the husband and is as easy as saying: “I divorce you” and becomes effective even if the husband did not intend it.
23- There is no community property between husband and wife and the husband’s property does not automatically go to the wife after his death.
24- A woman inherits half what a man inherits.
25- A man has the right to have up to 4 wives and none of them have a right to divorce him — even if he is polygamous.
26- The dowry is given in exchange for the woman’s sexual organs.
27- A man is allowed to have sex with slave women and women captured in battle, and if the enslaved woman is married her marriage is annulled.
28- The testimony of a woman in court is half the value of a man.
29- A woman loses custody if she remarries.
30- To prove rape, a woman must have 4 male witnesses.
31- A rapist may only be required to pay the bride-money (dowry) without marrying the rape victim.
32- A Muslim woman must cover every inch of her body, which is considered “Awrah,” a sexual organ. Not all Sharia schools allow the face of a woman exposed.
33- A Muslim man is forgiven if he kills his wife at the time he caught her in the act of adultery. However, the opposite is not true for women, since the man “could be married to the woman he was caught with.”
34-It is obligatory for a Muslim to lie if the purpose is obligatory. That means that for the sake of abiding with Islam’s commandments, such as jihad, a Muslim is obliged to lie and should not have any feelings of guilt or shame associated with this kind of lying.
The above are clear-cut laws in Islam decided by great Imams after years of examination and interpretation of the Quran, Hadith and Mohammed’s life. Now let the learned Imam Rauf tell us: What part of the above is compliant with the U.S. Constitution?
