Halfway through his term, the percentage of Americans that believe Barack Obama is Muslim continues to grow, while the number of those who see him as Christian shrinks. Why does this belief persist, in direct contradiction to all known facts?

Facts are funny things.

In the 2008 scampaign, his fight the smears site said he was a lifelong Christian. This fall he told an audience at a campaign rally that he is a Christian by choice, that his mother was agnostic and he came to Jesus as an adult.

During his trip to India, when commenting on the terrorist attacks in Mumbai, he prefaced his rather mild condemnation with expressions of regret that extremists use the “great religion” of Islam to justify violence.

Islam as a great religion is a common theme in the President's speeches. He believes that "throughout history, Islam has demonstrated through words and deeds the possibilities of religious tolerance and racial equality."

If Islam dominates a region, the kufir may be permitted to follow their silly beliefs, so long as they don't try to convert any muslims and can do without a hardcopy Bible, and are willing to accept second class citizenship.

Racial equality is not a problem for Islam. Muslims discriminate equally against non-muslims of the same nationality as the muslims.

Compare this to the President's speedy and unequivocal condemnation of the proposed burning of the Koran. It might be easy enough to conclude that he sees the destruction of an Islamic book as a far more heinous crime than the slaughter of Christians for their faith.

The Saudi government regularly burns non-Islamic texts that are seized within Saudi Arabia.

There has been no condemnation from the President.

He only speaks of a Holy Koran, not a Holy Bible. The Koran preaches heresay to the Christian text. That means it is not holy to a Christian.

Why is it that these articles always seem to imply that Americans are uniquely uninformed about the President's religion? Why isn't it acceptable to simply admit that there is not enough information to make a determination?
