Who will pray for Christopher Hitchens?

With Christopher Hitchens teetering on the brink of eternity, revisit this query from 2007:

Do we have any prayer volunteers for Christopher Hitchens? He’s the self -proclaimed “atheist/anti-theist,” and stunningly clever wordsmith. He leapfrogged puzzled agnosticism to a pledged rebellion against God.

He’ll be a tough turn-around, so thick is his iron-clad ignorance of the divine.

In a recent Newsweek he cynically dissects Mother Teresa’s dark theological struggles, a postscript to his derisive 1995 book, “The Missionary Position: Mother Teresa in Theory and Practice.” A week ago he was a featured speaker for an Atheist Alliance conference in Washington DC.

Hitchens’ latest book, “God Is Not Great: How Religion Poisons Everything,” maligns the devoted, be their god Creator or counterfeit. “Holy books,” including the Bible, are “mythological morality tales” and he suggests any religious training is child-abuse.

The unsaved can be prayed for as a whole, Jesus knows how to read hearts when prayers are uttered and groaned. We, as Christians, sell Jesus short when we forget to add the ones who need a doctor.

It was easy for me Pastor...

Much easier to pray for sinners than saints... He wasn’t hiding or anything...

I will. Look beyond his fault and see his need of the Saviour.

You can’t pray for every individual, but you can pray for individuals you know, or those for whom others you know have requested prayers.

Ah, that’s when you say the Fatima prayer.

“O my Jesus, forgive us our sins, save us from the fires of hell, and lead all souls to heaven, especially those in most need of Thy mercy.”

I believe she was found buried in a shallow grave along with her son and granddaughter, cut to little pieces after being robbed and killed by someone in her atheist organization.

I know...I was thinking beyond the grisly human death to her eternal address.

People like this have usually been hurt by the Church or Christians. There are so many people out there like that.

Yes. A self=proclaiming "Christian" who does harm to others in the name of God and causes loss of credibility toward Christ... I would prefer to be an Atheist facing judgement than one who has caused many to leave Christ.

RE: ““Dear God, give Christopher Hitchens everything he deserves ... “

I don’t think I’ll join you in that one because he might give me what I deserve instead.

1 Corinthians 6:9–11 (NKJV)
9 Do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived. Neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor homosexuals, nor sodomites, 10 nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners will inherit the kingdom of God. 11 And such were some of you. But you were washed, but you were sanctified, but you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus and by the Spirit of our God.

Well said! That was exactly my experience, and I think rip roaring adventure is about the best way to describe the new life in Christ. After 16 years I am still shocked that it is all true, and I hope I never lose that feeling.

I will morn his passing and think us all the poorer for it. I didn’t often agree with him, but he could make a cogent argument and was honest with himself at all times. Phonies suffer in his midst.

“If anyone can do it.” He can do it himself, it’s a matter of his will. You can do it God’s way or your way. PS 142:4-7

I looked on [my] right hand, and beheld, but [there was] no man that would know me: refuge failed me; no man cared for my soul.
I cried unto thee, O LORD: I said, Thou [art] my refuge [and] my portion in the land of the living.

Attend unto my cry; for I am brought very low: deliver me from my persecutors; for they are stronger than I.

Bring my soul out of prison, that I may praise thy name: the righteous shall compass me about; for thou shalt deal bountifully with me.

I have and will again. Thanks for reminding me. I sincerely hope that Mr. Hitchins’ eyes are opened to the truth of our loving and merciful God. It is NEVER too late this side of eternity to accept Him by faith and no announcement needs to be proclaimed if he does, in case he is afraid of humiliation. True people of God will always rejoice over any one soul that comes to Christ just as the angels in heaven do. I deeply hope that is not what is holding him back. He may only have a short time left. Our God STILL works miracles!

This is why I try not to get too upset when people malign God. He can handle them just fine and in His own time without my help.

Good point! Makes you wonder why Muslims feel they need to kill anyone that dares offend Muhammed or allah in even the slightest way. How big is a god who cannot defend himself? The true God:

Psalm 103:10-14

He hath not dealt with us after our sins; nor rewarded us according to our iniquities.

For as the heaven is high above the earth, so great is his mercy toward them that fear him.

As far as the east is from the west, so far hath he removed our transgressions from us.

Like as a father pitieth his children, so the LORD pitieth them that fear him. For he knoweth our frame; he remembereth that we are dust.
