Catholic Word of the Day: DISSIMULATION, 05-23-11
CatholicReference.net ^ | 05-23-11 | Fr. John Hardon's Modern Catholic Dictionary

Featured Term (selected at random):

DISSIMULATION

The act of concealing one's mind or real intention, an act that is morally permissible for a proportionally good purpose. Since secrets are to be kept, their preservation may at times require dissimulation, but of course never deception.

All items in this dictionary are from Fr. John Hardon's Modern Catholic Dictionary, © Eternal Life. Used with permission.

TOPICS: Apologetics; Catholic; History; Theology
KEYWORDS: catholic; catholiclist
Deception=a lie
Dissimulation=concealing a truth

This sounds like the seal of Confession, but maybe that is not what this is referring to.

I got to thinking about this. A parent might tell a young child that grandma had gone to visit God — rather than saying grandma had died.

What do you think?

I think one if the most liberating aspects of Catholicism -- I mean, besides the fact that it's the truth -- is that it demands the exercise of your faculties of judgment. Good judgment can't always be reduced to a fixed set of rules for each and every situation.

Anyone can see the value of refraining from telling someone how awful you think he is. For one thing, you might be wrong.

Very good point.

I was always taught as a child to look for one good point in every person I meet.
