Churches debate whether to marry gays
AP via SFGate ^ | 7/16/11 | RACHEL ZOLL, AP Religion Writer

After same-sex marriage becomes legal here on July 24, gay priests with partners in the Episcopal Diocese of Long Island will head to the altar. They have to. Their bishop set a nine-month deadline for them to marry or stop living together.

Next door, meanwhile, the Episcopal bishop of New York says he also expects gay clergy in committed relationships to wed "in due course." Still, this longtime supporter of gay rights says churches in his diocese are off limits for gay weddings until he receives clearer liturgical guidance from the national denomination.

As more states legalize same-sex marriage, religious groups with ambiguous policies on homosexuality are divided over whether they should allow the ceremonies in local congregations. The decision is especially complex in the mainline Protestant denominations that have yet to fully resolve their disagreements over the Bible and homosexuality. Many have taken steps toward acceptance of gay ordination and same-gender couples without changing the official definition of marriage in church constitutions and canons. With the exception of the United Church of Christ, which approved gay marriage six years ago, none of the larger mainline churches has a national liturgy for same-sex weddings or even blessing ceremonies.

I delivered to this headquarters in Garden City. N.Y. at the time. It might of Changed. But just to think this great Cathedral that is there was paid for by Conservative Christians to be built. I think from the mid 1800’s. Just a beautiful church. To think they must be rolling in there graves. What they were opposed to in life is now in there church.

I am not Catholic bashing but you came across as sanctimonious. The CAtholic church has plenty of problems.

Like Christ,

we hate the sin

but love the sinner.

How many times did Christ say, “Go, your sins are forgiven you and sin no more.”

Essentially these “churches” are debating whether or not they are still Christian. The fact that they are debating is a strong indication that the question was fully answered some time ago.

So you think you can do this on your own?

Isn’t that the mistake the atheists make?

We admit that and we are working on them.

I am posting with a broken arm— if that is sanctimonious, I’m sorry that you cannot hear the truth.

Are there weeds in your wheatfield?

I'm not much for sermon titles but I may need to make an exception in a few weeks.

So, their bishop has commanded homosexual “priests” to get married to their live-in lovers “or else”? Or else what exactly? Are they really trying to imply that having sexual relations outside of marriage is wrong for either straight or gay clergy as if there is no difference??? What about the simple fact that clergy are not supposed to be living in blatant sin anyway? That clergy is SUPPOSED to be setting an example of morality?

It is now becoming clearer why God destroyed Sodom, it was not only the homosexuals, it was also the “Tolerant” straights.

Excellent point! Even Lot was ready to offer his own daughters to the screaming violent neighbors who wanted sex with the "new guys".

I think that quote can be attributed to Leonard Ravenhill.

Thank God for the Roman Catholic Church.

You mean like:

St. Peter Catholic Church, Charlotte, NC

Gay/lesbian mass: Diocesan Ministry for Gay and Lesbian Catholics celebrates 15th annual mass for gay and lesbian Catholics, their friends, families. 7 p.m. July 27. 507 S. Tryon St. 704-332-2901.

Not much discussion about Catholics in there.

Nor Baptists, Assemblies of God, Nazarenes, Church of Christ, Fundamental Methodists, Missionary Alliance Churches, Adventists, etc.

HOW did we get to the point where this is debatable for a Church?

Look more like Mardi Gras costumes than vestments. I might consider a nice miter for a head cover, and a crook would be nice for any animals (2 or 4 legged) I meet on the street.

I might tap that one on the left.

I've been making this point with a certain Freeper regarding the United Methodist Church's flirting with the issue. He just never gets the point that once the issue is on the table for debate, the "Church" is already a rotting corpse.
