ADL Urges Vatican To Ensure Anti-Jewish Sect Accepts Teachings Of Vatican II...
Press Release ^

Posted on 09/18/2011 10:45:39 AM PDT by narses

New York, NY, September 16, 2011 … The Anti-Defamation League (ADL) urges the Vatican to ensure that a breakaway Catholic sect which teaches anti-Judaism will be required to accept the church's official positive teachings about Jews and Judaism before they are fully accepted back into the Roman Catholic Church.

The Vatican announced earlier this week that in order for The Society of St. Pius X to gain full reconciliation with the church, SSPX must accept some core church teachings, but they have not been made public.

It was unclear from news reports and Vatican statements whether the landmark reforms of the Second Vatican Council and subsequent Vatican teachings - which reversed nearly 2,000 years of church-based anti-Semitism, repudiated the deicide charge against Jews, and called for positive and respectful interfaith relations - were included among these latest requirements.

Abraham H. Foxman, ADL National Director and a Holocaust survivor, issued the following statement: We are confident that Pope Benedict XVI will continue to require the Society of St. Pius X, which espouses anti-Semitic and anti-Jewish beliefs, to publicly accept the church's positive teachings about Jews and Judaism since the 1965 Second Vatican Council, before fully accepting them back into the Roman Catholic Church.

It would be unthinkable to allow a Catholic breakaway sect that includes a Holocaust-denying bishop, Richard Williamson, to be reintegrated into the church while still being allowed to promote anti-Semitism and anti-Judaism - which they have been doing for years in their teachings and on their Web site.

We trust Pope Benedict's promise that he made to us during our meeting in 2007 that he would stand with us against all forms of anti-Semitism.

There are those who dislike Jews in every religious tradition, just as there are Jews who don’t particularly care for Christians.
Mr. Foxman needs to mind his own business.

Does the Vatican get to make some reciprocal demands of the ADL?

I didn't think so.

There is an historical, though not necessarily justifiable reason, for the animosity between Christians and Jews and it has not everything to do with the crucifixion of Christ.

All one has to do is read “Acts of the Apostles” and the letters of St. Paul, which describe the very early Christian church, and one gets the feeling that, even after Christ’s death, the first prosecutors of Christians were not so much the Romans but the Jews.

The very first Christian martyrs, saints Stephen and James, were killed by Jews. St. Paul had to go to Rome for trial because of accusations made by the Jews. He was stoned and beaten by Jews. All these memories lived out in the early church and never died down.

Regretably, Foxman is an anti-Catholic bigot.

I must say that I’ve never heard SSPX say anything against the Jews. If there is a problem then, yes, they need to get in line with the Church. But I’m not aware that there is one.

A much bigger problem is that some of them have said that the See of Peter is vacant, since there hasn’t been a real Pope since the time of Vatican II.

And some of them have said that Vatican II was not a real council. Frankly, it was a regretable and unnecessary council, but it never asserted anything that was actually heretical. Nothing unusual about that. Some Councils over the millenia have been extremely important. Others might as well never have happened. But genuine councils are preserved from heresy, and I’m afraid that Vatican II was a genuine council.

The heresy and dissidence and stupidity were introduced by people who deliberately misinterpreted the Council.

As for Foxman, he just loves to bash the Catholic Church, every chance he gets.

St Paul was a Jew who was persecuting Christians (Jesus asked, why are you persecuting me?), then you might say he seen the light, was blinded, and then was saved, and became and Apostles!

Why should any Christian organization listen to the ADL, a notorious vehicle for anti-Christian bigotry? Please!

I find it very interesting the ADL feels it is in the position to make demands to the Pope.

Right. LOL. I'm still waiting for the following headline to appear somewhere . . . anywhere . . .

SSPX has a bunch of people who don't like Judaism. I don't have a problem with that. I have a problem with their delusional conspiracy theories and penchant for Holocaust denial, which they hide behind proclamations of persecution.
I wish the ADL would spend a little time dealing the intolerance and fear all too many Jews show towards Christians. Silly thought, Oikophobia is the religion of the ADL.

Oh look at the poor little Christians. 100 years of getting caught up in sectarian fights between Jewish sects. Compare that to 1600 years of anti-Jewish persecution by Christians.

You are right - and, more than that, there are people in every religious tradition who show a mean spirit and fall into hatred. A Zoroastrian might despise you because you do not revere the sacred fire, a Buddhist might consider you to be an idiot because you don’t believe in reincarnation, etc.

There is nothing to be done but to tolerate others and look beyond it. Demanding that they change their minds is silly.

The persecution went on a lot longer than that. A lot longer. In places it continues to this day. It is routine for Christian priests to be spat upon in the streets of Jerusalem.

No member of the SSPX is sedevacantist. It is possible that such views are held by a minority of lay adherents, but any such who would date to reveal this to a member of the SSPX would be immediately and sharply corrected.
