From the article: Where did the word "Mormon" come from? Have you assumed that it came from the Book of Mormon? Anton LaVey's Satanic Bible has a list of "Infernal Names." Guess what one of them is? "Mormo." Mormo is the god of the ghouls, an evil being obsessed with the dead. What would the names of his followers be? "Mormons?" Is this just a coincidence?

From the article: "In Chinese, "Mormon" means "gates of hell." That's why the Mormon missionaries have problems in Hong Kong, for instance. They have to avoid using the word "Mormon" in trying to convert the Chinese." Is this really just a coincidence? Mormons (LDS) are obsessed with genealogies, Temple rites and rituals for the dead. They believe the dead can visit the living, and that the dead can convert to Mormonism while in their grave!

Thought it came from that non-language of Reformed Egyptian where MORMON meant “More Good” or something like that.

Just as soon as those golden plates materialize it will no longer be a non-language...

I don't recommend holding your breath for that event though.

In all fairness, Crowly lived some time afer Joseph Smith and Mormo could have been a concoction or delusion of Crowly’s sick mind.

Aw, geez. Hasn’t the LDS church got enough silly crap going on you can make fun of without dragging in that loser LaVey? I wonder how much money his family has made off that dork’s writings?

I have yet to meet a Mormon @$$hole. I don’t know how they manage to breed them all nice, but to a man, they sure have been. That doesn’t mean I buy their hooey religion, but I won’t call them Satanist, any more than I would call Buddhists or Hindus Satanists. The only Satanists there are out there are lonely dorks like LaVey who want to piss off their mommies.

There’s an HP Lovecraft story where he uses “mormo” in an evil ceremony. I looked it up, and mormo seems to be an evil familiar/spirit that bit children associated with hecate (greek goddess).

Never thought to connect it with the word Mormon, though I’ve read the story many times. It’s the “Horror at Red Hook”, about a cult of mutant fishmen rising up in Brooklyn. It’s a great story. I thought it might be in a few of them, I thought maybe the one he ghost-wrote for Harry Houdini, but nothing came up on the search.

This Lewis guy seems to believe that mormons and masons run the illuminati, and are secretely satan worshippers. And throws the Hindus and Muslims in as somehow being allied with them. I reckon he’s pretty out there. I do think the enemy is involved with some of the things going down today.

Do you believe that Mormons are called Mormons because of this Mormo thing? I thought it was after their angel Moroni deal. I always thought that was a funny name, you have to add an “m” to not come off kind of silly, or Italian.

MORMO ΜΟΡΜΩ
A female spectre, with which the Greeks used to frighten little children. (Aristoph. Acharn. 582, Pax, 474.) Mormo was one of the same class of bugbears as Empusa and Lamia.
Source: Greek Mythology Index

From Mormo from The Arcana Wiki
Saint of streets, and brilliant one, that strays by night;
Foe of radiance, but friend and mate of gloom;
In howl of dogs rejoicing, and in crimson gore,
Wading 'mid corpses through tombs of lifeless dust,
Panting for blood; with fear convulsing men.
Gorgo, and Mormo, and Luna, and of many shapes,
Come, propitious, to our sacrificial rites!
- Philosophumena of Hippolytus
Book IV, Chapter XXXV

Basic Information
Mormo is a Spirit that bites bad children. This female figure from Greek and Roman Mythology is possibly a Vampire. She may be a companion or Avatar of Hecate, the Greek goddess of the moon and magic. Very little information about Mormo has survived from classical antiquity, where she appears to have been revered in part of a mystery cult.

As with Lilith, the identity of Mormo may have started as a more general term, which then became more personified over time. Mormo appears in a few plays of Aristophanes, who uses the name as if it were a synonym for "bogey man" or "monster".

Hippolytus of Rome, in his Refutation of all Heresies (also known as the Philosophoumena), detailed a pyromantic form of Divination that invoked Mormo, Bombo, Gorgo, Hecate, and Luna. As described by Hippolytus, the divination was nothing more than a Hoax involving pyrotechnics and a cauldron with a fake bottom, a hoax he proceeded to debunk the way one might ruin the secret of a magic trick. Therefore, Mormo might have magic and powers connected to fire.

Note that phrases from the Philosophoumena are hard to clearly define and explain. When he says "Gorgo, and Mormo, and Luna, and of many shapes," is that calling out to three, four, or just one entity? Is Mormo just another name for Hecate, and/or the Moon? Does Gorgo refer to a Gorgon? Hecate is a three-headed goddess, and there were three Gorgon Sisters in Greek Mythology, and three names are given in that line. In The powers of evil in Western religion, magic and folk belief, Richard Cavendish says that Mormo was a "nursery bogy" that was a source of fear for Erinna of Telos, a poetess of Ancient Greece. In the very next sentence he opines that Gorgo indeed refers to Medusa, and says the face in the moon used to be called the "Gorgon's Head". The face of Medusa was a common protective device in ancient greece, known as the Gorgoneion. In The Satanic Bible, Anton Levay flips the gender of Mormo, rendering him "King of the Ghouls, Consort of Hecate". Wikipedia makes tantalizing references to a Mormo in australian mythology, but (as of this writing) never explains the reference.

From my last post, with the Arcana Wiki perhaps id'ing "Mormo"...

From Mormo from The Arcana Wiki

Hippolytus of Rome, in his Refutation of all Heresies (also known as the Philosophoumena), detailed a PYROMANTIC form of Divination that invoked Mormo, Bombo, Gorgo, Hecate, and Luna. As described by Hippolytus, the divination was nothing more than a Hoax involving pyrotechnics and a cauldron with a fake bottom, a hoax he proceeded to debunk the way one might ruin the secret of a magic trick. Therefore, Mormo might have magic and powers connected to FIRE.

Some of the worst Mormon teachings popped up @ funeral services. What did Joseph Smith have to say @ a funeral service that has a close linkage to fire?

See: Joseph Smith's King Follet Sermon

'Twas on that forum where Smith's King Follet sermon, where this common focus of Joseph Smith toward the end of his life was represented re: looking forward to a spirit world where he and his followers would dwell in "everlasting burnings" (his words, not mine). [ALL: Clink on link above for context for Smith quotes I cite below]

"...you have got to learn how to be Gods yourselves...going from one small degree to another, and from a small capacity to a great one...from exaltation to exaltation, until you...are able to dwell... (Teachings of the Prophet Joseph Smith, pp. 346-347)

Well, "until you...are able to dwell" where?
WHERE were the "ghost-lights" -- the demon-lights of Smith telling him where he & his followers would dwell???
The answer is right there on p. 347 of Teachings of the Prophet Joseph Smith:
"until you...are able to dwell in everlasting burnings."
"The spirits...are blessed in their departure to the world of spirits. Enveloped in flaming fire, they are not far from us...
Whoaaa.

Smith must have felt the guilt gnawing at him from no assurance of forgiveness of sins; but he wouldn't let go of his "everlasting burnings" teaching late in life: "Those who have done wrong always have that wrong gnawing them. Immortality dwells in everlasting burnings." (ToPJS, p. 367)

These spirits -- perhaps the demon "Mormo" -- craving their own "immortality" as false gods wouldn't let go of Smith...
...and actually occasionally told him the truth...
...as they did about "everlasting burnings"... and "enveloped in flaming fire"
...They had the last laugh at Smith's -- and his followers' -- expense.

Well, who is Mormon in the Book of Mormon?

In Mormon 1:1, he says, "I, Mormon, make a record of the things which I have both seen and heard, and call it the Book of Mormon."

He says he is son of Mormon (1:5). And in the last chapter, he claims "we have written this record according to our knowledge, in the characters which are called among us the reformed Egyptian, being handed down and altered by us, according to our manner of speech." (9:32)

Tell us? Does "Mormon" sound like a Reformed Egyptian or Jewish name? What is even "Reformed Egyptian?" Is it a recognized language by anyone studying ancient people groups? Is the Book of Mormon historical? (No on all counts)

As for alternative sources, I haven't reached any conclusions due to lack of the chain of evidence.

Unfortunately they've seemed to have been misplaced or something.

Seems to me that those elusive golden plates were conveniently whisked away by the angle (or is that supposed to be angel) moron-y right after the phoney baloney contained on them was interpreted by Joe.

Maybe they'll show up when Harold gets his dates right.

But I wouldn't hold my breath waiting for that either...

One thing is for sure, when the early history of the Mormons played out, the god of the ghouls with the obsession of the dead was able to get his fill. of LEAD!!!

JESUS: Hey Smith!       Remember that boast you made about doing more than even I had done to hold the 'church' together?

JOSEPH SMITH: Where am I?

JESUS: Don't you remember? A few seconds ago you were in that jail.

JOSEPH SMITH: Oh; yeah; but where am I NOW?

JESUS: Don't you remember? Does bang - bang ring a bell?

JOSEPH SMITH: Oh; yeah - that crummy gun I had was about USELESS!

JESUS: I hope you left instructions on how to hold your church together.

JOSEPH SMITH: Dang! I knew there was SOMETHING I was forgetting!

JESUS: Looks like there's a power struggle going on down there.

JOSEPH SMITH: Yeah; there was always SOMEone who wanted the power that I held - especially over the LADIES - wink wink.

JESUS: No need to worry about that now; remember what my friend Matthew wrote down?

JOSEPH SMITH: This? “At the resurrection people will neither marry nor be given in marriage; they will be like the angels in heaven” (Matthew 22:30)

JESUS: That's it.

JOSEPH SMITH: I thought that was mistranslated.

JESUS: Nah - it was right.

JOSEPH SMITH: Oh well; it was fun while it lasted. My buds will still get it on with the girls.

JESUS: Uh; I'm sorry; in just a few more years; your followers will cavein to the United States government and abandon the 'Eternal Covenant' that you came up with.

JOSEPH SMITH: ME!? YOU are the one that told me to do that!

JESUS: Sorry; but you must have mistranslated what I told you. What part of Do NOT commit ADULTERY did you not understand?

JOSEPH SMITH: mumble....

JESUS: What did you say?

JOSEPH SMITH: Oh, nothing.

JESUS: Well; it was interesting talking to you; but now I must get back to perparing a place for those who believe in Me.

JOSEPH SMITH: Oh, yeah; the Celestial Kingdom.

JESUS: No...

JOSEPH SMITH: The Telestial one?

JESUS: Nope.

JOSEPH SMITH: SUREly not the TERRESTRIAL one!!

JESUS: Nope. Didn't you read that the mind of man had NOT conceived of it? Paul wrote it down in 1 Corinthians 2:9.

JOSEPH SMITH: I thought that was mistranslated.

JESUS: No; it wasn't.

JOSEPH SMITH: You SURE?

JESUS: Yes. Now I must be going: what did you say your name was again?

JOSEPH SMITH: Joseph Smith.

JESUS: Hmmmm. According to my Heavenly FAITHbook, you didn't sign in as one of my friends - sorry, I never knew you.

JOSEPH SMITH: But....

Thought it came from that non-language of Reformed Egyptian where MORMON meant “More Good” or something like that.

The "Caractors" are the only tangible evidence in existence related to Smith's story. No gold plates, no brass plates, no peep stones, no Urim and Thummim... only these "Caractors," not a single one of which is in the purported languages.

Smith's translation of the Caractors. According to Martin Harris (Joseph Smith - History, 1:64), "I went to the city of New York, and presented the characters which had been translated, with the translation thereof, to Professor Charles Anthon, a gentleman celebrated for his literary attainments. Professor Anthon stated that the translation was correct, more so than any he had before seen translated from the Egyptian. I then showed him those which were not yet translated,* and he said they were Egyptian, Chaldaic, Assyriac, and Arabic; and he said they were true characters."

Speak right up now in all truthfulness. Isn't it revealing how Smith started out making a stab at creating believable "caractors" but quckly gave up and produced nothing but squiggles, ending up wih a series of nothing more than crude little scribbles? Yet Professor Anthon supposedly translated them!

*Harris must have had two or three pieces of paper with him—one with characters and a translation of them (on the same paper or a separate one) and one with untranslated characters—quite likely the "Caractors." Some Mormon "scholars" have gone out on a limb, sawed it off, and knocked themselves out trying to translate from these true Egyptian, Chaldaic, Assyriac, and Arabic characters a segment that would correspond with a verse from 1 Nephi.

Modern-day experts in Egyptian, Chaldaic, Assyriac, and Arabic. In 1829, any knowledge of these languages possessed by U.S. scholars would have been rudimentary at best. Expertise in them has vastly improved since then. So go ahead, do it. Get any modern expert in these languages to identify which of these "Caractors" are Egyptian, Chaldaic, Assyriac and Arabic. Better still, accept the claim of Mormon apologists that Anthon did indeed so testify and that his appraisal of the Caractors was correct. (Op. cit, pp. 73-75)

Save your money! Samples of Assyriac/Aramaic and Arabic writing:

     .

      .

What say you? Which of Smith's "Caractors" resemble the Assyriac and Arabic ones? No need to pay experts for their analysis. A child could accurately check this out. These writing systems have remained constant for well over 3000 years.

True; but COULD HAVE carries zero weight, as it is mere speculation, and serves to run the conversation off in a random direction.
