The Reformation Polka

When I was ein younger man I studied canon law; though Erfurt was a challenge it was just to please my pa. Then came the storm, the lightning struck; I called upon Saint Anne: I shaved my head, I took my vows – an Augustinian.

Refrain: Papal bulls, indulgences and transubstantiation: speak your mind against them and face excommunication. Nail your theses to the door, let’s start a reformation, papal bulls, indulgences and transubstantiation.

When Tetzel came near Wittenberg, St Peter’s profits soared, so I wrote a little message for the All Saints’ bulletin board; ‘you cannot purchase merit for we’re justified by grace; here’s ninety-five more reasons, Brother Tetzel, in your face!

Refrain

They loved my tracts, adored my wit; all were ex empleror; the pope, however, hauled me up before the emperor. ‘Are these your books? Will you recant?” King Charles did demand; “I will not change my diet sir, God help me, here I stand.’

Refrain

Duke Frederick took the wise approach, responding to my words by knighting George a hostage in the kingdom of the birds. ‘Use Brother Martin’s model as the languages you seek, stay locked inside the castle with your Hebrew and your Greek.’

Refrain

Now let’s raise our steins and concord books together in this place and spread the word that ‘catholic’ is spelled with lower-case; the word remains unfettered when the Spirit gets a chance, so come on, Katie, drop your lute and join us in our dance.

Refrain

"When the Saints Go Marching In"

I: We are trav'ling in the footsteps
Of those who've gone before
But we'll all be reunited (But if we stand reunited)
On a new and sunlit shore

V: O when the Saints go marching in
When the Saints go marching in
O Lord I want to be in that number
When the Saints go marching in

And when the sun begins to shine
And when the sun begins to shine
O Lord I want to be in that number
When the Saints go marching in

When the moon turns red with blood
When the moon turns red with blood
O Lord I want to be in that number
When the Saints go marching in

On that hallelujah day
On that hallelujah day
O Lord I want to be in that number
When the Saints go marching in

O when the trumpet sounds the call
O when the trumpet sounds the call
O Lord I want to be in that number
When the Saints go marching in

B: Some say this world of trouble
Is the only one we need
But I'm waiting for that morning
When the new world is revealed

(As Intro)

V: When the revelation comes
When the revelation comes
O Lord I want to be in that number
When the Saints go marching in

When the rich go out and work
When the rich go out and work
O Lord I want to be in that number
When the Saints go marching in

When the air is pure and clean
When the air is pure and clean
O Lord I want to be in that number
When the Saints go marching in

When we all have food to eat
When we all have food to eat
O Lord I want to be in that number
When the Saints go marching in

When our leaders learn to cry
When our leaders learn to cry
O Lord I want to be in that number
When the Saints go marching in

Didn’t you get the word; Calvinists don’t dance.

I recommend that all Protestants read the 95 Theses posted by Martin Luther. He was an ordained Catholic Priest. Martin Luther had a different understanding of Christianity > than any Protestant I have ever met.

I can't help but notice, in this polka the protestants can't lift themselves up without dragging Catholics down.

Can't a holiday be enjoyed without trashing someone else's faith?

Our pastor and his family band led everyone at our church's Reformation Party in this song. It sounds really nice with a banjo in the lead. If you heard the song, I think you'd realize that it was intended to be good-natured joking. How serious can you be when a song is being sung to the tune of Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious?

How exactly are you to celebrate Reformation Day without pointing out the theological differences between the Catholic Church and the Protestant churches which led to the split? That would be like celebrating Easter without talking about the Resurrection or celebrating Christmas without mentioning Christ or the Fourth of July without mentioning the founding of our country. All these holidays are based on historical events. Pointing out differences in theology isn't trashing someone else's faith. If you like politically correct, man-made holidays with no historical foundations, celebrate Kwanzaa.

As far as I know, Luther never had anyone guillotined. :-)

Well, Calvin burned Servetus at the stake and Protestant princes hunted and murdered Catholics. Yes, Catholic princes did the same.

It was illegal to be a Catholic in England, Scandinavia, etc. until the 19th century.

I recommend all Protestants read the Church Fathers.

Reading Luther is on par with reading Marx.
