Catholic paper draws new criticism over old wounds

He came to Boston from Spain 15 years ago on a Roman Catholic lay mission, a deeply devout father of seven who forged his faith within a controversial religious movement born of the slums of Madrid.

Now Antonio Enrique is editor of The Pilot, the newspaper of the Boston Archdiocese, and a target of criticism for articles that have opened old wounds for a church trying to move past a decade of turbulence.

He published a column two weeks ago suggesting that homosexuality is caused by the devil. The uproar had barely faded when, a week later, The Pilot enraged priest abuse victims with a flattering birthday ode to Cardinal Bernard F. Law, the former Boston archbishop and the public face of the scandal.

For the past 10 years, Enrique, a confidant of Cardinal Sean P. O’Malley, has steered The Pilot along the conservative edge of Roman Catholic orthodoxy, in line with his background in the Neocatechumenal Way, a relatively new religious community far more conservative than many American Catholics. Some bishops have embraced the Neocats, as they are often called; other bishops have sought to ban them.

“Many of the opinions voiced [in The Pilot] seem to be pre-Vatican II,’’ said Boston College historian and author, Thomas O’Connor, a regular reader, referring to a more rigid era of the church, before changes made in the 1960s.

Enrique declined to be interviewed and has not answered questions about the paper’s recent controversies.

For his religious mission in the United States, Enrique, now 48, had to quit his job in Spain where he worked in marketing and technology for a General Electric company. He came to Boston in 1996 to fulfill a call from Cardinal Law for mission families to help bring.............

some in the Church forget what happened to Sodom and all those sodomites.

The few in the Church who have a problem with calling sodomy evil - are likely practicing sodomites themselves.

God has an infinite memory and will not forget their abominations.

“The Pilot doesn’t help to build community when it causes this much of a division or crisis,’’ said the Rev. Robert Bowers, who works at The Paulist Center in Boston."

My bible says that anyone who follows a sincerely Christian walk will always endgender division and controversy.

God has an infinite memory and will not forget their abominations.

And yet, in God's eyes, there are some things worse than Sodom and Gomorrah: those manifesting the spirit of religiousity that cannot and will not see God and his representatives right in front of their own eyes (Matthew 10 and 11).

Some people seem to use this particular sin as their own personal devil totem as the sine qua non of evil.

I ahve known about the movement for 15 years and have never heard the members referred to as “Neocats”.

His most controversial remark may be his praise of Cardinal Law.

I met Cardinal Law personally several times. He was a friend of my Aunt, an extremely good and orthodox Catholic. Cardinal Law seemed to be a good man. He was orthodox, and the liberal priests in the Archdiocese constantly complained about that. I read many of his columns in the diocesan newspaper, and those were always orthodox.

How much he was responsible for the homosexual priest scandal is hard to say. He did not kick that scum out who was a known advocate of NAMBLA. But then again, he was between a rock and a hard place, because if he kicked out all of the dissident priests, there would hardly have been anyone left to say Mass or run the parishes.

The libs were absolutely delighted when he got the blame for the scandal and was shipped off to Rome. What the real ins and outs of it were I don’t know, but I suspect that he inherited a mess and found it extremely difficult to set about fixing it.

Homosexuality is the work of the Devil? Well, as the originator of Evil and the Father of Lies, I don’t think such a statement is all that far out. The inclination may be attributed to natural disorders, but preaching that “gay is good” is certainly the work of Satan.

How one can be “right wing” and supportive of Cardinal Law is beyond me.

If Cardinal Law represents Catholic orthodoxy, no wonder the Church is in such a shape.

No, all I’m saying is that I can’t make him out. He seemed orthodox, and the liberal Catholics were constantly complaining about him.

I don’t think he was encouraging the pederasts, as a few rogue bishops did. I don’t know why he didn’t do more to stop it. There was nothing wrong with him personally, as far as I could ever see.

I don’t think he would have gotten such a lot of bad press if he had been the pederast enabler that the media pretend. They didn’t do that to the real guilty parties, like Rembert Weakland.

It would seem, to choose quantity over quality will soon result in having neither.

Well, it’s a problem with Massachusetts. If you kicked out all the crazy liberals, there would hardly be anyone left.

Elder William Brewster would be appalled at what has happened to the Bay Colony. They even had a theological quirk back then, that the children of the Saved are also presumed to be saved, unless there are strong indications otherwise.
