Tens of thousands wait for hours in freezing temperatures to kiss belt that Christians believe was worn by Jesus' mother

MOSCOW — Braving freezing cold temperatures and ice-covered sidewalks, tens of thousands of Russians stood in line Wednesday to see and kiss a newly arrived relic of the Virgin Mary in Russia's largest Orthodox cathedral.

The Virgin Mary's Cincture, a belt that Christians believe was worn by Jesus' mother, was brought to Russia last month from Mount Athos, a monastic community in Greece.

Kissing the relic, which is encased in an ornamental box, is believed to help barren women conceive and heal other ailments.

The line of people, mostly women, waiting to enter the golden-domed Christ the Savior Cathedral stretched for 2.5 miles (4 kilometers) along the Moscow River despite temperatures that dropped to below minus 5 Celsius (23 Fahrenheit).

Sounds to me like they're worshipping Mary.

In Orthodoxy they are worshiping Father (God), Mother (Mary) and Son (Jesus).

No. Many are honoring and seeking what Mary's actions represent which is service to God through the actions of Motherhood that Mary was asked of by God the Father. While also honoring her service to God the Father and son through being a vessel for the virgin birth and being the Mother of Jesus.

There are many reasons people are there. Fundamentally these are the underpinnings. Mary represents the ultimate service to God the Father and God the Son. Which these people showing up are honoring as well as seeking strength to carry through as well.

I contend that the Apostle Paul did more, and he died as a martyr for Jesus.

Nonsense. They are directly putting Mary in place of Jesus or the Holy Spirit.

Let’s take the prayer of Prayer of Pope Pius XII as an example.

I’ll use just the bolded excerpts from the prayer.

we cast ourselves into your arms

1 Peter 5:7 Casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you. (When did we need to replace God with Mary?)

confident of finding in your most loving heart appeasement of our ardent desires, and a safe harbor from the tempests which beset us on every side.

Hebrews 4:15-16 For we do not have a High Priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but was in all points tempted as we are, yet without sin. Let us therefore come boldly to the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need. (once again Catholics replacing Christ with Mary)

O crystal fountain of faith

Romans 12:3 according as God hath dealt to every man the measure of faith. or "a measure of faith." (but Mary is the “fountain of faith” for Catholics)

Lily of all holiness

1 Samuel 2:2 There is none holy as the LORD: for there is none beside thee: neither is there any rock like our God. (for Catholics however, “all holiness” is given to Mary)

Conqueress of evil and death

Hosea 13:14 I will ransom them from the power of the grave; I will redeem them from death: O death, I will be thy plagues; O grave, I will be thy destruction: repentance shall be hid from mine eyes. (but Catholics claim it was Mary who conquered death)

Convert the wicked

John 16:7 Nevertheless I tell you the truth; It is expedient for you that I go away: for if I go not away, the Comforter will not come unto you; but if I depart, I will send him unto you. 8 And when he is come, he will reprove the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment: 9 Of sin, because they believe not on me; (Catholics have even replaced the Holy Spirit with Mary)

Statement by catholic Bishop Liqouri “.......We often more quickly obtain what we ask by calling on the name of Mary than by invoking that of Jesus.....” She...is our Salvation, our Life, our Hope, our Counsel, our Refuge, our Help” Need I go on? Catholics have replaced virtually every attribute and working of God and given that to Mary in their worship.

Maybe it will knock the scales from their eyes. I'm sure we're about to get flooded with copy/paste excerpts from Catholic writings that will be full of legalistic Catholic rules. I'll stick with the Bible.

Orthodoxy, like Catholicism, is deeply attentive to Church history and tradition.

This is a difficult concept to grasp for American congregationalists, utterly adrift as they are, on a sea of individualism and subjectivity.

I am deeply moved by this action of the Russian people knowing how dangerous it once was to worship God or to give regard to spiritual aspirations. I know the spirit never left them as I have spoken to many who have told stories of hidden relics that were taken out only briefly to be prayed to or contemplated before being shuttered back into hiding.

As one who was raised Catholic, spent a period of time in my adulthood as a Presbyterian and then converted back to Catholicism, I am so grateful to have the deeply attentive to Church history and tradition (as you so wonderfully put it) back in my life. Honestly. It never left even when I took a break from the church. I came back understanding this deep regard for the Church history and tradition even more so. I am so grateful to God for blessing me with this understanding. Thank you for the post.

Mary is the very symbol of the Incarnation, a doctrine that Protestants seem to play down. But apart from that, there is a now a tendency for Protestants to forget that God is just, and that Jesus is our Judge. We can go directly to Jesus, you say. Well, yes, but begging for mercy, for when we die and when he shall comes again it will be as the Supreme Judge of the world. Mary does not judge us.

My soul magnifies the Lord,
And my spirit rejoices in God my Savior.
For He has regarded the low estate of His handmaiden,
For behold, henceforth all generations shall call me blessed.
For He who is mighty has done great things for me, and holy is His name. And His mercy is on those who fear Him from generation to generation.
He has shown strength with His arm:
He has scattered the proud in the imagination of their hearts.
He has put down the mighty from their thrones,
and exalted those of low degree.
He has filled the hungry with good things;
and the rich He has sent empty away.
He has helped His servant Israel, in remembrance of His mercy;
As He spoke to our fathers, to Abraham and to His posterity forever.

Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit.
As it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be, world without end. Amen

Magníficat ánima mea Dóminum,
et exsultávit spíritus meus
in Deo salvatóre meo,
quia respéxit humilitátem
ancíllæ suæ.

Ecce enim ex hoc beátam
me dicent omnes generatiónes,
quia fecit mihi magna,
qui potens est,
et sanctum nomen eius,
et misericórdia eius in progénies
et progénies timéntibus eum.
Fecit poténtiam in bráchio suo,
dispérsit supérbos mente cordis sui;
depósuit poténtes de sede
et exaltávit húmiles.
Esuriéntes implévit bonis
et dívites dimísit inánes.
Suscépit Ísrael púerum suum,
recordátus misericórdiæ,
sicut locútus est ad patres nostros,
Ábraham et sémini eius in sæcula.

Glória Patri et Fílio
et Spirítui Sancto.
Sicut erat in princípio,
et nunc et semper,
et in sæcula sæculórum.

Amen.

She became the Mother of God, in which work so many and such great good things are bestowed on her as pass man’s understanding. For on this there follows all honor, all blessedness, and her unique place in the whole of mankind, among which she has no equal, namely, that she had a child by the Father in heaven, and such a Child . . . Hence men have crowded all her glory into a single word, calling her the Mother of God . . . None can say of her nor announce to her greater things, even though he had as many tongues as the earth possesses flowers and blades of grass: the sky, stars; and the sea, grains of sand. It needs to be pondered in the heart what it means to be the Mother of God.

(Commentary on the Magnificat, 1521; in Luther’s Works, Pelikan et al, vol. 21, 326)

Evangelicals treat her as if she were the mother of Samuel or of John the Baptist. But that reduces her son to the level of a Prophet, does it not? No accident that the cult of Mary is a response to elevation of Jesus to deity, but as the god-man, not an angel in disguise. Which is why after the Council of Nicaea, they began dedicating churches to the Virgin.
