Yes, you can read the Bible for “your own self.” But do you not think it’s just a little bit arrogant for any of us to think we are more brilliant and better at interpreting the Scriptures than the most brilliant theologians and philosophers of the past two thousand years? So many people have read the Bible for themselves and have come up with all kinds of crazy, cruel, wicked, horrible behavior as a result, so obviously reading for ourselves doesn’t necessarily lead us to the truth about God’s word. People have been reading the Scripture and inventing new denominations and new religions for centuries; they believe different things about God, so they can’t all be right. Clearly our own insights as individuals aren’t very accurate.
It wasn’t a cover-up. They just shuttled the guilty men of the cloth to other parishes, paid off the families that were hurt and neglected to inform the authorities.
OK, when I say it like that it sounds like a cover-up.
Many “brilliant theologians and philosophers” have also “come up with all kinds of crazy, cruel, wicked, horrible behavior”.
+++++++
“Clearly our own insights as individuals arent very accurate.”
This the need for the catholic “Magesterium”.
But if you can’t interpret the Bible accurately, how can you be sure you are interpreting the pronouncements of the Magesterium accurately?
Catch-22.
Christ IS the CENTER of the Catholic Church, both in Word and in Sacrament.
Do you have that?
Or are you missing something.
**People have been reading the Scripture and inventing new denominations and new religions for centuries; they believe different things about God, so they cant all be right. Clearly our own insights as individuals arent very accurate.**
Very wise words.
That’s why Catholics do not use YOPIOS.
Or, as I see it, the catholic church.
I told you I have Christ as my Savior and Lord and am indwelled by His Spirit. You didn’t answer my question. I will not ever be a member of the Catholic church - do you say I am bound for salvation or damnation?
Clearly our own insights as individuals arent very accurate.
But clearly the protection of the Roman Church isn’t sufficient since all matter of nonsense has and does come out of the Vatican.

“protection of the Roman Church”
Oxymoron. There is no such thing. Unless they have panic buttons in the confessionals now....
A hint: It wont be one that molests your children then seeks to cover it up.
>An off topic red herring if I ever saw one.
We use many of the same scriptures to prove the necessity of One True Church to provide evidence that The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints fills the bill nicely.
(ok...I’m trolling just a bit!)
“Clearly our own insights as individuals arent very accurate.”
As off-topic as a warning label on a pack of cigarettes.
If you cant interpret the Bible accurately, how can you be sure you are interpreting the pronouncements of the Magesterium accurately?

Thank you, Salvation, for putting yourself out there and posting this. It reveals to us non-Catholics where you are coming from.
Perhaps there really aren’t any choices, and God already knows what will happen to each of us.
I'm not referring to the transient words of individual Catholic priests or of some unofficial statement of some guy in some department of the Vatican, but to the official doctrine of the Catholic Church. That's definite, it's not nonsense, and it was hammered out by painstaking effort over the millenia through the discourse of brilliant and God-filled men. Its premises are actually quite logical, not nonsensical. It's a solid guide.
Full disclosure: I was raised as a Protestant and educated as a scientist, so until two years ago I thought the Catholic Church was full of superstitious nonsense, too. Then I began studying the doctrines with great rigor. It was amazing to find the clear logic behind everything I'd been taught to regard as stupid.
interesting the complete lack of refutation of the scripture in the article, and instead claims of ‘cherrypicking’ instead...i would have thought our separated brethern bonifide bible only, scripture alone, scripture interprets scripture, band of theology studs would have torn the scripture references in the article, to pieces....
