Tebow’s Religion, and Ours
National Review Online ^ | December 3, 2011 | Daniel Foster

Posted on 12/05/2011 3:32:27 PM PST by wmfights

When the Detroit Lions’ Stephen Tulloch sacked Tim Tebow in the first quarter of their week eight matchup, the linebacker immediately kneeled next to the prone Denver quarterback, in a mockery of Tebow’s habit of praying on-field, most recently seen after his miraculous fourth-quarter comeback against the Dolphins the week before.

The insult coincided with and reinforced the explosion of “Tebowing” as an Internet meme, complete with a Twitter account and web-site. There you can see an act of communion with one’s creator rendered as a bit of pop-cultural ephemera, and you can scroll through pictures of folks striking the pose everywhere from Oxford to Istanbul, with that muddle of irony and enthusiasm that has become my generation’s trademark.

But there isn’t an ironic bone in Tim Tebow’s body. That’s what makes him conspicuous. That’s what makes the fact that he’s managed to stay squeaky clean, in a sport that notoriously is not, conspicuous. And it’s why the power of Tebow’s evangelical-Christian faith, and the earnestness with which he professes it, seems to annoy so many people.

What a blinded and bigoted viewpoint.

Amen. I think false pride is probably the driving force behind that kind of thing.

Notice the Detroit Lions have gone into the crapper since they mocked Tebow?

Don't read too much into that. That is the Lion's natural home. :)

But maybe by bowing down to pray after each football game, does Mr. Tebow not witness for the Lord to many, many viewers watching tv or from viewing stands?

TV doesn't show the players that gather in the middle of the field to pray and give thanks to the Lord after a game. I think a lot of people would be surprised at how many great players are also professing Born Again Christians. Tebow has made it impossible for the media to avoid the subject.

They hated him first not because he is a professing and public Christian, but because he is unabashedly pro-life. The mockery and hatred began when the first rumors of a pro-life Super Bowl commercial became public.

Have you not visited any of the 40 Days for Life — that the Catholic Church started threads — ??

I tend not to bother with RC threads.

The mythology that the RCC and it's members are the leading fighters in the Pro-Life movement is just that, myth. Your church has been supportive in this fight, but at best 55% of your members actually vote that way. If you want to see a Christian witness in the Pro-Life movement look at how Born Again Christians vote.

And I am not ignorant.....

Clearly the comment you posted fits that description and more.

Did you mean Baltimore, Blitzburg, and New England? Because Cincinnati is not very good.

I did forget New England.

I think Cincinnati is probably a stronger team than the Broncos right now. The QB for the Bengals is another great role model. Dalton is a Born Again Christian. At TCU he started a Bible study that ended up having 100's come to it.

**I tend not to bother with RC threads.**

That’s too bad. Are you saying you don’t care about a pro-life thread if it is posted by a Catholic? Or you don’t care about a pro-life thread, period.

I invite you to join with us in praying in front of Planned Parenthood Clinics and hospitals that perform abortions to stop those abortions in our cities.

I would encourage you to point out that you do not have to be catholic to be pro life. In fact there would not be a pro life movement at all if not for the dilligent hard work from evangelicals. Personally I welcome the Johnny fine-lately support from the catholic church. It would be nice if the parishioners would walk the talk. The vast majority of Catholics I know would never vote republican. Just saying.

Well said!

We welcome any in this fight, but talking the talk is not the same as walking the walk.

I always thought that Tebow was a Catholic because his mother chose not to abort him.

Evidently that is not the case.

Wow...I can't believe I just read that. And from someone who for several years has constantly spent their time posting what they think evangelicals believe and don't believe. No most of those posts are so much off base. These two short sentences explains a LOT! Just wow.

Maybe the peer pressure to ridicule Tebow and discredit Christians in general is a way to avoid confronting the bigger questions. Is there a God? Is there a Heaven and Hell? If so where am I headed?

The whole self-esteem movement is a direct contradiction to where we stand before a Holy God.

As a culture we just can't believe we are sinners. And of course Shuller, Osteen and others just feed into what the culture wants to believe.

And let’s not forget liberal (read promurder) Catholic Pols who are served communion by the Pope. Where is the church discipline?

Any Pol who supported abortion as a member of a truely Reformed Church would be under chuch discipline and and if they didn’t repent would be sent outside the camp.

The politically conservitive FRoman Catholics on FR have thier heads in the sand on this.

And when evangelicals post back what they really believe and think, they're essentially called liars about it.

Like we're just making it up and Catholics really DO know what they're talking about.

It's shameless.

I am pretty sure that I have read that he is Southern Baptist.

Tebow is a member of the First Baptist Church of Jacksonville. It's the largest Baptist Church in the area and I believe it's also one of the largest in the country.

I'm happy to see Tebow do so well as I am a die hard Gator fan. However, I'm also a Patriot fan and I expect Belichic and company will be busting his bubble on December 18th.

In any event, he's a fine Christian young man and is an easy target since he wears his faith on his sleeve. Add to this the fact he's not the proto-typical NFL pocket passer, he's also a bit of a novelty.

Back in the day when the Jaguars had Mark Brunnell, he acted the same way Tebow does. But since the Jags were decent then and Brunnell fit the mold of a NFL quarterback, he wasn't considered "different".

Tebow’s Religion, and Ours

It’s interesting.

So many see this as being about *religion*, his vs *ours*.

What they don’t get is that it’s not about *religion*. Tebow has a vibrant, real relationship with his Lord and Savior and the world simply does not know what to do with it.

Interesting kid. We better pray for this role model. There are probably all types out there right now figuring out a way to take him down....morally.

Love the section you copy/pasted.

That may be part of it however, I don't believe that's why he's getting all the scrutiny. In my view, he's proving all the so called "NFL experts" wrong. You're not supposed to be be able to play QB in the NFL unless you have the skill sets of Manning, Brady, Rodgers, etc. Tebow is proving them wrong and that's an attack on their credibility. They're anxiously awaiting Tebow to fail so they can say "I told you so".

It's called pride
