The Evangelical Case for Newt Gingrich
American Thinker ^ | December 18, 2011 | Kevin Tharp

Evangelicals play a significant role in the Iowa electorate. In 2008 they overwhelmingly voted for Mike Huckabee. Huckabee is perceived by many as having won the vote by living and campaigning in Iowa exclusively and speaking to many churches and church groups prior to the caucuses. Many Iowans may also have voted for him because he was a Baptist minister. Iowans were impressed for sure. But it was not enough to propel him to the nomination. In fact by the time the process rolled around to Florida, the Huckabee share of voters was only 13%.

For this election cycle, evangelicals have the potential of having even less influence if they split their vote. Many of the candidates have evangelical appeal. Let me remind my fellow evangelicals what this election is and is not about. It is about voting for the next president. It is not about voting for your next pastor or someone who sounds like a pastor, whether or not he spoke at your church or church group. It is not about voting for someone based on their Biblical hermeneutics or exegesis. It is not about voting based on the candidates' families or their particular experiences with their children. It is not about voting based on how or where they grew up whether under poverty or prejudice. It is not about voting based on their trials and tribulations in life. All of these factors may seem important but are not compared to what is. All of the candidates believe in Christ, and have a Judeo-Christian worldview. What is important is what they will do in office and whether they have a good plan to implement...

I agree with this. Once they’ve established themselves as Christian, there’s no point in trying to “out-church” each other. It’s a waste of time and cheapens the way they seem to view their religion. Now, its time to show us what they plan to do for the country. Not Iowa. Not New Hampshire. Not even SC. But the whole country. I’d love to hear a good idea from one of them that might work and not just typical political pandering that promises to give to one group by taking from another.

Dang, an Evangelical who has “spiritual convictions” but, yet, at the same time makes “political sense”. Great article.

That isn’t my type of humor, but it’s funny, nonetheless.

Very tender pastoral letter. I need to read articles like this to firm up my support for Newt.

....."All of the candidates believe in Christ,....."

One might say yes but what do they believe about Christ and while we are not "voting for a pastor" or other, merely having a President who claims to be of the same faith as most of us, has shown us to be an abomination and an effrontery to all believers.

Obama does "believe in Christ" but what he believes is a world apart from evangelicals and we are paying a very heavy price for his "faith."

I hate to rain on your parade but Rick Perry’s pastor (who claims to represent Southern Baptists and evangelicals everywhere) has already condemned all Catholics to hell with all us Mormons.

It’s way too late to try to squeeze your way out of this tight spot.

The word “hypocrite” is way too polite.

“I need to read articles like this to firm up my support for Newt.”

Rick Perry’s pastor friend who claims to speak on behalf of Southern Baptists and evangelicals has already condemned all Catholics to hell with all us Mormons. Now all of a sudden Catholics are acceptable “Christians” to the evangelicals? Who are you people? No wonder so many people are fed up with the contradictions and hypocrisy.

More hate. It has already been proven that Jeffers ISN’T Perry’s pastor - but why let a good lie interfere with your support of romney, eh SD?

Further, it has already been shown that the claim that he represents all SBC is false as well. Ah yes, lying for the Lord and mitt romney.

You use the word ‘hypocrite” around like it is a part of you.

Wow, yet ANOTHER article on FR about Newt going after the Evangelical vote. Are we up to two dozen yet? There's virtually the same amount of Catholic voters in Iowa as evangelical protestants, but I have yet to see a single article pitching the newly "Catholic" Newt Gingrich to his "fellow Catholics".

Obviously he's AUTOMATICALLY entitled to our votes, right?

Here's my prediction: Perry wins Iowa.

Remember, you heard it here first. Hopefully, it will shut up the "Newt is the only person who can stop Romney" crowd.

I’m still quite skeptical that Gingrich is anything other than a globalist shill.

Seems to me his whole political career has demonstrated that he plays by the big boys’ rules.

. . . twitches the ‘correct’ direction whenever they jerk his puppet strings.

I see you moved deftly from ‘Rick Perry’s pastor’ to ‘Rick Perry’s pastor friend’...

What’s the next step? A pastor Rick Perry spoke to once?

Really, this is ridiculous. Perry has never said anything anti-mormon, anti-catholic or anti any religion.

What’s wrong with you?
