The Evangelical Case for Newt Gingrich
American Thinker ^ | December 18, 2011 | Kevin Tharp

Evangelicals play a significant role in the Iowa electorate. In 2008 they overwhelmingly voted for Mike Huckabee. Huckabee is perceived by many as having won the vote by living and campaigning in Iowa exclusively and speaking to many churches and church groups prior to the caucuses. Many Iowans may also have voted for him because he was a Baptist minister. Iowans were impressed for sure. But it was not enough to propel him to the nomination. In fact by the time the process rolled around to Florida, the Huckabee share of voters was only 13%.

For this election cycle, evangelicals have the potential of having even less influence if they split their vote. Many of the candidates have evangelical appeal. Let me remind my fellow evangelicals what this election is and is not about. It is about voting for the next president. It is not about voting for your next pastor or someone who sounds like a pastor, whether or not he spoke at your church or church group. It is not about voting for someone based on their Biblical hermeneutics or exegesis. It is not about voting based on the candidates' families or their particular experiences with their children. It is not about voting based on how or where they grew up whether under poverty or prejudice. It is not about voting based on their trials and tribulations in life. All of these factors may seem important but are not compared to what is. All of the candidates believe in Christ, and have a Judeo-Christian worldview. What is important is what they will do in office and whether they have a good plan to implement...

I agree with this. Once they’ve established themselves as Christian, there’s no point in trying to “out-church” each other. It’s a waste of time and cheapens the way they seem to view their religion. Now, its time to show us what they plan to do for the country. Not Iowa. Not New Hampshire. Not even SC. But the whole country. I’d love to hear a good idea from one of them that might work and not just typical political pandering that promises to give to one group by taking from another.

Dang, an Evangelical who has “spiritual convictions” but, yet, at the same time makes “political sense”. Great article.

....."All of the candidates believe in Christ,....."

One might say yes but what do they believe about Christ and while we are not "voting for a pastor" or other, merely having a President who claims to be of the same faith as most of us, has shown us to be an abomination and an effrontery to all believers.

Obama does "believe in Christ" but what he believes is a world apart from evangelicals and we are paying a very heavy price for his "faith."

I hate to rain on your parade but Rick Perry’s pastor (who claims to represent Southern Baptists and evangelicals everywhere) has already condemned all Catholics to hell with all us Mormons.

It’s way too late to try to squeeze your way out of this tight spot.

The word “hypocrite” is way too polite.

“I need to read articles like this to firm up my support for Newt.”

Rick Perry’s pastor friend who claims to speak on behalf of Southern Baptists and evangelicals has already condemned all Catholics to hell with all us Mormons. Now all of a sudden Catholics are acceptable “Christians” to the evangelicals? Who are you people? No wonder so many people are fed up with the contradictions and hypocrisy.

More hate. It has already been proven that Jeffers ISN’T Perry’s pastor - but why let a good lie interfere with your support of romney, eh SD?

Further, it has already been shown that the claim that he represents all SBC is false as well. Ah yes, lying for the Lord and mitt romney.

You use the word ‘hypocrite” around like it is a part of you.

Wow, yet ANOTHER article on FR about Newt going after the Evangelical vote. Are we up to two dozen yet? There's virtually the same amount of Catholic voters in Iowa as evangelical protestants, but I have yet to see a single article pitching the newly "Catholic" Newt Gingrich to his "fellow Catholics".

Obviously he's AUTOMATICALLY entitled to our votes, right?

I’m still quite skeptical that Gingrich is anything other than a globalist shill.

Seems to me his whole political career has demonstrated that he plays by the big boys’ rules.

. . . twitches the ‘correct’ direction whenever they jerk his puppet strings.

I see you moved deftly from ‘Rick Perry’s pastor’ to ‘Rick Perry’s pastor friend’...

What’s the next step? A pastor Rick Perry spoke to once?

Really, this is ridiculous. Perry has never said anything anti-mormon, anti-catholic or anti any religion.

What’s wrong with you?

Rick Perry stated what his friend pastor Jeffress said about Catholics and LDS did not represent his views. Pastor Jeffress later clarified his remarks about voting or not voting for LDS—he said he would vote for Romney if he unfortunately won the nomination.

From the article which quotes this from the Gingrich website: "The rejection of judicial supremacy and the reestablishment of a constitutional balance of power among the legislative, executive, and judicial branches will be an intense and difficult undertaking. It is unavoidable if we are going to retain American freedoms and American identity.

Newt is the only one who understands that unless we do what is said in the simple sentences above we're doomed to losing this country as it has been organized since it was founded. Unless we have the Federal government reduced to no more than the level of mandates and control that existed prior to LBJ within one, maybe two, Presidential election cycles, this country will come apart. And don't kid yourself, nothing that comes about under those circumstances will be anywhere nearly as good as the nation we'd be losing even if it were to begin with a nearly identical Constitution. Not by a long shot.

Rick Perry has a problem with his pastor/friend who was speaking on behalf of Southern Baptists and evangelicals and who condemned Catholics and Mormons to hell. Deal with it. Now the evangelicals are jumping on the Newt bandwagon. I still say they’re a bunch of hypocrites.

Perry has the same kind of problem Obama had with his pastor/friend. Deal with it.

“You think I’m a Rick Perry supporter?”

No, I think you are a Newt supporter and are trying to make the case that all of a sudden the evangelicals are for Newt who converted to Catholicism. I made the point that Perry’s pastor friend already condemned Catholics to hell along with us Mormons and he claimed to be representing Southern Baptists and evangelicals. Now someone expects us to believe that the evangelicals are willing to support a Catholic who they think is hell bound. They can’t have it both ways. Hypocrites!

Priceless. The evangelicals, represented by Rick Perry’s pastor friend who claims to speak on behalf of southern baptists and evangelicals said the Catholics are going to hell along with all us Mormons. He further said that REAL Christians should support a REAL TRUE Christian (like Rick Perry) and NOT support non Christians (going-to-hell sinners) like Catholics and Mormons.

I still say they’re a bunch of hypocrites blowing in the wind.

What is important is what they will do in office

Which is precisely the evangelical problem WITH Gingrich. We don't know. Matthew 7:20 says "Wherefore by their fruits ye shall know them", but what are those fruits? Are they of the brash young architect of the Contract with America or are they of the going-soft, individual-mandate, self-described Wilsonian of today?

Are they of the smartest man in the room or are they of the serial adulterer whose judgment is therefore called into question even if God has forgiven that sin? We don't know, and a lot of us aren't buying as a result.

Have you heard of Charlie Osburn, lay Catholic evangelist? He stayed at my home in Redmond Washington when he preached (bombastically) at Faith Hope Love Church in Issaquah Washington. Charlie also preached in Belize, Central America. He used to have a program on TBN also. Here’s the link to his website:

http://gnm.org/charlieosburn.htm

If I weren’t a Mormon I’d have to be a Catholic due to the Priesthood. I am upset by the hypocrisy of the “evangelicals” who are willing to use us (Mormons and Catholics) to their advantage (for example passing Prop 8) and then when they don’t need us anymore they turn on us saying we are not Christians and we’re all going to hell.

Sheeesh already.

Obama did not have a ‘pastor friend’ He sat in a church for 20 years where the pastor hated Conservatives and hated America.

Many people like Rick Perry who aren’t exactly in his camp.

Kinky Friedman, who makes a career of running against Perry, likes him.

Perry cannot help it if a pastor who likes him makes statements you call outrageous. It’s not his job to censor a religious leader, although he has disavowed the statements.

Rick Perry does not condemn Catholics and Mormons to hell.

I understand your sensitivity if you are a Mormon but it doesn’t excuse making unfair and unsupported accusations against Perry.

Rick Perry should be your friend.

Proven false and repudiated by Perry - now the next lie.

speaking on behalf of Southern Baptists and evangelicals

Already proven false as well.

Sad to see the only way SD has to support this is throught he repetition of comments that have been proven false. Sad to see such stooping to support mitt romney.
