Scientists Say Turin Shroud Image Created by Ultraviolet Lasers
Yahoo News ^ | 12/21/11 | Eric Pfeiffer

The exact origins of the Turin Shroud remain a great mystery, but scientists are now disputing the long-held belief that the religious artifact is a medieval forgery.

Italian researchers at the National Agency for New Technologies, Energy and Sustainable Economic Development say they believe the image was created by an ultraviolet "flash of light." However, if that theory is true, it remains a mystery as to exactly how that technology could have been implemented at the time of the Shroud's creation. While the technology is readily available in present day, it was far beyond the means of anyone around pre-20th Century.

The Turin Shroud is said to be the burial cloth of Jesus, but has long been believed to be a fake, created during medieval times. It is currently kept in a climate-controlled case in Turin cathedral. Scientists at the Italian agency have reportedly spent years attempting to recreate the Shroud's imagery. 'The results show a short and intense burst of UV directional radiation can colour a linen cloth so as to reproduce many of the peculiar characteristics of the body image on the Shroud of Turin,' the scientists said.

The Church in Turin, maybe. And how much do you think the Church makes from the shroud? Give us a number.

Having looked into the shroud controversy for years I am completely convinced that the shroud is likely the burial shroud of Jesus Christ.

There is tons of evidence to it being real, and no real evidence of it being a fake.

Carbon dating itself is flawed. This Carbon dating is certainly flawed. The samples were taken from the worst places on the shroud, edges/corners that would be contaminated areas and from pieces of cloth used to repair the shroud at a later date, not original to the shroud.

The examples of pro evidence are too numerous to mention here. Based on the evidence, in a court of law, the Shroud of Turin would be found to be real.

The shroud is attested from well before Leonardo was born.

“He was also no friend of the Vatican.” — well, technically Leo lived from 1452 to 1519 and the Vatican city came into existance only in 1929 and St. Peter’s was only completed in 1590. So, I’m sorry but your statement even to make it “no friend of the papacy” is wrong

Bottom line....It’s a money maker for the church.

Doubtful. It's only exhibited on rare occasions, and there's no charge to see it (charging to see, or otherwise venerate, relics is prohibited), and it costs money to preserve it and protect it, so how do you figure it makes money at all?

I’m with you. I’m not Catholic and I don’t really care whether or not most of their relics are real or not, but in the case of the shroud and the other head cloth, I think the evidence is strong enough to believe they are authentic.

The power of the Resurrection captured in real time in a medium for all to see, before photography.

A 2-D image encoded with a 3-D image. Yeah, a flash will do that-—riiiiiight.

Next they will be saying that sharks with laser beams tied to their head did it. Who knew they could be so artistic?

The Shroud has no paint pigment penetrating the linen fibers. Something else formed the image.

There exist some sunscreens which are volatile, e.g. cinnamate esters. So they protect against exposure, and then evaporate away completely. (After, say, 500 years to be sure to get every last drop.)
