Protestant and orthodox Jewish leaders join in opposition to HHS contraceptive mandate.
Today, more than 40 non-Catholic religious organizations including Protestant-affiliated colleges, National Association of Evangelicals, Focus on the Family, Assemblies of God, Northwest Nazarene University, and Eastern Mennonite University, sent a letter to the White House demanding religious protection against the newly issued HHS contraceptive mandate.
We write not in opposition to Catholic leaders and organizations. We write in solidarity. Says the coalition letter. Leaders of other faiths are also deeply troubled by and opposed to the mandate and the narrow exemption.
In a letter sent December 21, 2011, the group expressed deep concern about the contraceptive provision in the Health and Human Services mandates, which includes the most narrow religious employer qualifications excluding protection of most-faith based organizations.
We are all deeply concerned about the narrow exemption, including proposals made to expand it while still leaving unprotected many faith-based organizations. The letter continues, We believe that the Federal government is obligated by the First Amendment to accommodate the religious convictions of faith-based organizations of all kinds, Catholic and non-Catholic.
The Becket Fund for Religious Liberty currently represents Belmont Abbey College, a private Catholic College, and Colorado Christian University, a non-denominational Christian University, in the first lawsuits against this unprecedented mandate.

What folks may be missing is the motivation for the White House to create this firestorm, such that they’re forced to withdraw Obamacare.
This would avoid having the Supreme Court declaring it unconstitutional.
Then, they can have their czars implement it one piece at a time, without the worry of each piece being defeated in court.
This is my summary of discussions heard on Hugh Hewitt this evening.
That is a distinct possibility. Another one is that Obama is such a tone deaf klutz that he would do this even to Muslim charities (yes there are such things) causing them to be in the same corner as the Jews and Christians.
And not a peep of acknowledgment from Pelosi that Democrat minions promised a lot of bishops that no such thing would happen. Well, she must have a political death wish.
I agree -- on this matter it is beyond the realm of even religious matters but Obama is forcing people to obey his liberal laws, or else.. Next it will be that churches MUST allow gay marriages, polygamy, etc. -- direct infringement on rights.
Right, this is an attach on the Christian Church not just Catholics and it’s also a trojan horse for abortion not just contraception. Obama’s calculation that alienating sincere Christians will be offset but number of women and young it brings to the table (or voting booth) is seriously misguided. The groups Obama seeks to appeal to aren’t all that concerned about it but the Christian community will respond with a vengence.
During these rough times for Christians, it is time for Christians to stop the in-fighting and unite to stand up to a common enemy.
This is more than just an attack on religious freedom it’s an attempt to subjugate any and all business entities to mandated service levels by fiat. This whole thing needs to be thrown out by SCOTUS.
I would like to point out to those of you who are decrying Catholic bashing that I have read several threads on here denigrating Martin Luther and the Reformation. Not once on those threads did I read any Catholic taking it to the Catholics who had posted the thread nor adding reenforcing comments.
I am all for working together to stop our evil tyrannical government. But it must be a two way street.
This is no longer the land of the free. We are now the land of the governed.

I have two friends who have both declared to me how much they hate the Catholic Church. However, one grew up Lutheran, the other is Methodist and neither one has ever set foot in the church. Neither one has any idea what they are talking about.
The Catholic faith is a gift and I am lucky to have been given it.
You know the reformation might not have been divinely inspired. Don’t assume it can be defended.......
From what I understand Islam is dead set against abortion. Conservative Muslims would be against artifical birth control as well.
Of course one might be able to say that about "conservative" versus "liberal" any-faith, I suppose.
If that's the case then Obama would be against ANYONE of ANY faith who crossed his will.
if one were to say “xx are fifth columnists” or “are not true Americans” or “since you’re xx, why would you vote Republican?” then yeah, one would shut out discussion and yeah that would be bigotry.
If someone wants to use contraceptives, why should it be reimbursed? Next will Obama say that all medical plans need to play for ahem toys or visits to strip clubs?
I think thin skinned Obama was put out when the Supreme Court slapped down (9-0) his position that Religious institutions were not protected from his EEOC mandates by virtue of the 1st Amendment. It’s pure petulent paybacdk. I really think he operates that way - “I WILL have my way”.
However, I would like to point out that if it were a non-Catholic religion in the government's sites, it is not at all certain that Catholics would be standing in solidarity with their "brethren." Catholic dioceses have been petting the ACLU snake for decades with regard to "creation science" with scant regard to the consciences of people who object to evolution on religious grounds. Now the snake has bitten them.
Let us hope the lesson has been learned.

Wow, you can shoehorn your ridiculous assertions into any issue, can’t you?

Most unfortunately, it isn't a "ridiculous assertion."
I will give you the benefit of the doubt and assume that were Obama placing another religion in his sites, you would stand with them. Some Catholic FReepers, however, seem to have little regard for the consciences of non-Catholics.
