Vatican: LCWR under direction of the Holy See; must promote doctrine "taught through the ages"
Rorate Caeli ^ | June 6, 2012

Today the Superiors of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith met with the President and Executive Director of the Leadership Conference of Women Religious (LCWR) in the United States of America. Most Rev. Peter J. Sartain, Archbishop of Seattle and the Holy See’s Delegate for the doctrinal Assessment of the LCWR, also participated in the meeting.

The meeting provided the opportunity for the Congregation and the LCWR officers to discuss the issues and concerns raised by the doctrinal Assessment in an atmosphere of openness and cordiality.

According to Canon Law, a Conference of Major Superiors such as the LCWR is constituted by and remains under the supreme direction of the Holy See in order to promote common efforts among the individual member Institutes and cooperation with the Holy See and the local Conference of Bishops (Cf. Code of Canon Law, cann. 708-709). The purpose of the doctrinal Assessment is to assist the LCWR in this important mission by promoting a vision of ecclesial communion founded on faith in Jesus Christ and the teachings of the Church as faithfully taught through the ages under the guidance of the Magisterium.

I left out the following heading:

Now, if they’d just do this with the “Catholic” Universities!

Yes, I suspect these “nuns” will assure the Vatican that they’ll walk the straight and narrow, then promptly resume doing whatever they please.

I had a battle with someone about this so I read the original doc from the Vatican.

What I didn’t realize is that the LCWR and national organizations like it are of pontifical right. That means they are not independent entities...they only exist by specific permission of the Pope and remain under his immediate jurisdiction.

These nuns are not just independent citizens...they directly report to the Pope, so he has the right to correct and even disband them as required. Try founding a pro-life chapter of Planned Parenthood, or publicly disagreeing with Obama’s policies as a member of his Cabinet...see where that gets you.

The Catholic Universities/Colleges, as I understand it, are under the immediate authority of their local bishops. So yes, I’d like to see them taken to the woodshed as well, but that will have to be their bishops who do that.

The colleges have been effectively laizied, and are not under the direct control of the bishop, or even under the religious congregations that may have founded them. In a way, a university ought to be free, but, if I may refer to Newman, they are not Catholic unless the core of the institution is theology. In most “Catholic” schools today, it is incidental.
