The bishops released a statement a short time ago:
Today the United States Supreme Court issued a decision upholding as a tax the provision of the Affordable Care Act (ACA) that requires individuals to purchase a health plan—the so-called “individual mandate.”For nearly a century, the Catholic bishops of the United States have been and continue to be consistent advocates for comprehensive health care reform to ensure access to life-affirming health care for all, especially the poorest and the most vulnerable. Although the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) did not participate in these cases and took no position on the specific questions presented to the Court, USCCB’s position on health care reform generally and on ACA particularly is a matter of public record. The bishops ultimately opposed final passage of ACA for several reasons.
First, ACA allows use of federal funds to pay for elective abortions and for plans that cover such abortions, contradicting longstanding federal policy.The risk we identified in this area has already materialized, particularly in the initial approval by the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) of “high risk” insurance pools that would have covered abortion.
Second, the Act fails to include necessary language to provide essential conscience protection, both within and beyond the abortion context.We have provided extensive analyses of ACA’s defects with respect to both abortion and conscience.The lack of statutory conscience protections applicable to ACA’s new mandates has been illustrated in dramatic fashion by HHS’s “preventive services” mandate, which forces religious and other employers to cover sterilization and contraception, including abortifacient drugs.
Third, ACA fails to treat immigrant workers and their families fairly.ACA leaves them worse off by not allowing them to purchase health coverage in the new exchanges created under the law, even if they use their own money.This undermines the Act’s stated goal of promoting access to basic life-affirming health care for everyone, especially for those most in need.
Following enactment of ACA, the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) has not joined in efforts to repeal the law in its entirety, and we do not do so today. The decision of the Supreme Court neither diminishes the moral imperative to ensure decent health care for all, nor eliminates the need to correct the fundamental flaws described above.We therefore continue to urge Congress to pass, and the Administration to sign, legislation to fix those flaws.

I’m with the Bishops. There are still many faults in this so called healthcare nonsense, and they need to be addressed.
Am I or you supposed to be taxed up the ying yang so that someone else can have an abortion?
I don’t want to pay that tax, if that is how my money is going to be spent? Would you want your money spent that way?
So I take it that is the way a Catholic says that yes, the 100 year effort to socialize medicine in America was good and that it is conservative to support that.
I believe there is confusion by some between the Catholic Church’s position as it relates to providing life-affirming health care for all and the insistence by some that health care be provided/paid for by the government.
Apparently, some have no idea the extent of the Catholic Church’s long established healthcare complex, from hospitals, to hospices, nursing homes, etc. If, as they said they would, the Catholic bishops shut down all the church-related healthcare facilities, the US would be in very serious trouble.
Those Catholic Church-related facilities have provided scaled-fee or free services to the poor and vulnerable of any denomination for generations. And, they have provided the services far better than the govt could ever do.
So the left is right? Jesus is against conservatism and wants socialism to take over America?
The push to replace Americans with immigrants is part of this leftist agenda of the Catholic church and the majority of Catholic voters.
This is another one of those educational threads for me, I see it in the Catholic vote, but I didn’t know that it was so fundamental to the Catholic agenda in America.

Recent convert and I take exception to the socialist comment. Hell the USCCB is suing the feds over Obamacare. That’s more than can be said for SCOTUS. At least someone is standing up for the freedoms of Americans.
I don’t see how any Catholic in good conscience can pay the fine.

I wonder why the Bishops do not come out strongly for repeal of Obamacare.It is a very bad law and yes it now the law of the land.The law is for abortion and euthanasia.The Bishops are supporting Obama in his quest for European Socialized Medicine which allows for more abortions,euthanasia and killing young defective chidren.The Bishops have been poorly informed on the dangers of this law from the beginning.
As with Roe v Wade Obama got his law.He does not care how.We must now repeal Obamacare and repeal Obama.

Post 22 wasn’t about God wanting America to socialize medicine?
Because it is not the bishops' role in life to figure out the provision of health care. It is their role to oppose making every American complicit in abortion and provision of contraception through ACA, and that is what they are doing.
If the Protestants, being a bunch of spineless cowards, did not rolled over and played good puppy to the government on moral acceptability of contraception, we would not have any of that, by the way.

Yes, Catholics and good Christians are being persecuted right now.

In a recent Old Testament reading, all the craftsmen and rich people were sent off to Babylon, and only the lowly were left in Israel — the very poor. Yet Christ says they will be blessed.

and there is a failure likely in your parish and mine to promote subsidiarity. The Church built many of the hospitals in this country, the Church should do a better job supporting medical missionary work to rural areas in this country. That and listening to doctors regarding tort reform would address a lot of the true ‘access’ issues we have in this country.
