We can take it for granted that Tom Cruise – whose divorce proceedings are already such a catastrophe for Scientology – will never talk in public about Xenu. The existence of this intergalactic emperor, who flourished c 75,000,000 BC, was top secret until the Church’s enemies took to the internet. Advice to journalists: if you ask Cruise about Xenu, the doors of Hollywood (where the Church wields immense influence) will slam in your face.
On the other hand, it’s safe to ask any Scientologist about Kolob. This is the star, or possibly planet, that is closest to the throne of God. Astronomers haven’t found it – yet – but it served as the inspiration for the planet Kobol in Battlestar Galactica.
Why is it safe to ask Cruise about Kolob? Because it’s Mormon, not Scientologist: it appears in The Book of Abraham, “translated” from Egyptian papyri by Joseph Smith, the founder of Mormonism. I use inverted commas because Smith couldn’t read Egyptian. The papyri were funerary texts.
The person you mustn’t ask about Kolob is Mitt Romney. The teaching isn’t a secret, but Latter-day Saints aren’t keen to discuss it. These days they stress their similarity with Christianity, and there’s no Kolob in the Gospels.

Anyway, he had a Great Grandma (Some say grandma) named Hollob, and she wasn't a Branch Davidian SDA member, but belonged to the Church of the First Born somewhere in East Central Oklahoma ~ which was part of the same cluster of organizations called Church of the First Born/General Assembly to which Bill Clinton's baby daddy and mother belonged in Arkansas.
Those in the know understand very well that what you have in this nexus are interlevings from the Mormon movement and the far older Church of the First Born as well as the Seventh Day Adventists.
There are those who argue all of these groups are totally independent and unrelated, even Ervil LeBaron's blood thirsty Church of the First Born (in Texas) which is claimed to be purely Mormon in origin.
It's not.
These groups have been swapping personnel for a couple of centuries, and where you scratch one of them you'll find the others lurking somewhere among the cousins, or the title deeds to the farms and buildings they own.
Planet Kolob is probably among the least of our worries. "One Mighty and Strong", shared by many Mormon groups, some SDAs, and some First Born congregations, is probably worth some indepth study.
Isn’t it interesting the tangled web that these cults form - from the Mormons to the Seventh Day Adventists, to Jehovah’s Witnesses (which originated with Charles T. Russell, again out of the SDAs)...

They ran into a real problem with the sacraments ~ no wheat and no wine in lapland in those days!
Then there were problems with the Scandinavian countries, the new Swedish Empire for one, so Christianization stalled out for a good while. By the time it was restarted these folks were being sent to America by the boatload.
The other relationships grew out of that particular background.
Islam itself seems to have similar foundational problems starting with a failed attempt by Christians in Damascus to Christianize the Arabs of Mecca. so to that degree there is a common feature. However, the impetus that set everything in motion was wholly Christian in both cases.
One of the problems inherent in the tradition of single missionaries going out alone is they find it difficult to extirpate the former pagan belief systems until it is too late.

I’ve not found anything about Russian Orthodox connections to “First Born Church”, which (all three main versions) are branches directly from the LDS folks.
Is there another “First Born”?
That particular church is the result of a Swedish and FInnish Lutheran Church revival of an even older "Church of The First Born" that was initiated in the earlier/to mid 1500s in what is now Finland ~ by the Russian Orthodox church.
There were various Sa'ami who'd had contact with Christianity since their first permanent contact with Southern European/North African society in the 9th century. No doubt they brought back some of the ideas they obtained from Christians, but since the people South of them were mostly into Thor and Odin worship, that had to be pretty rare.
In the 1300s the Black Death killed off a large percentage of the Norse and virtually none of the Sa'ami ~ partly because the Sa'ami didn't eat wheat so they were not importing the rats and fleas that carried the disease ~ but also partly because they are naturally immune to all sorts of diseases ranging from Cholera to Black Plague to Thyphus, Typhoid Fever, etc.
They are different.
However, the death of the Norse gave them an opportunity to move into new economic niches such as fishing, and then in the 18th century, whaling.
The Protestant Reformation moved into Scandinavia while the Sa'ami were still being Christianized ~ which led to some interesting problems ~ they were left to their own devices for a good long while. Then, with Sweden's decision to plant a colony in America, they were apparently forcibly transported to Delaware, Maryland and Pennsylvania to cut trees and manufacture pine tar and pine tar products for sale to the Swedish and British navies.
By the early 1700s the Swedish Lutheran church seems to have taken a guiding interest in the American colony, and they relocated to York PA, and elsewhere. I am personally aware of a colony located at Schoharie Creek NY ~ complete with Swedish Lutheran missionaries.
At some point these people lost the knowledge of their own identity.
In the mid 1800s new Scandinavian immigrants arrived in America and imagined they were the first of their kind to ever settle here. That brought in an even later Church of the First Born known almost universally as the Old Apostolic Lutheran Church ~ which is almost purely Sa'ami ~ just like it is in Sweden and FInland.
This leads to some confusion to those just beginning to take a look at these bodies.
So, what do they have in common? Well, they make rules ~ just like the Old Order Amish. Some of them further proscribe the use of doctors or modern medicines. You are supposed to rely on faith healing. A number of the older First Born operations are currently under intense scrutiny by governments in Oklahoma, Oregon, Indiana, and elsewhere for allowing children to die of treatable illnesses. Apparently most of these churches practice unmarked burial ~ you get a stone but your name isn't on it.
The later arrivals from Scandinavia made the same strict rules of behavior but best I could find out they use doctors.
So, what's the Mormon connection ~ that's with the OLDER church where you had congregations using imported freeze dried amanita muscaria as a sacrament, before moving on to peyote further West in the 1800s. NOTE: Many congregations adopted Christian sacraments so this doesn't apply to all of them.
Most of the ex members of the older group consider it a crazy cult. I've talked to people who describe their "escape'.
