Breaking news: House of Bishops affirms gay commitment ceremony

Posted on July 9, 2012 by cherie

Cherie Wetzel reporting from the 77th General Convention in Indianapolis

July 9, 2012

This afternoon, the House of bishops voted in roll call vote, to affirm A049 the resolution endorsing the same-sex commitment ceremony. The vote was 111 yes, 41 no and 3 abstained.

As I listened to the 1:45 minute discussion prior to the vote, I continued to have hope as clearly 19 bishops stated they would vote no that I had not expected.

At the end of the process, after announcing the results, Presiding Bishop Katharine Jefferts Schori cautioned the House to follow Bishop Duncan Gray’s (Mississippi) advice and endorse the vote with humility, admitting that the Church may be wrong on this issue.

Her admonishment went unheeded by gays and lesbians who crowded the press area and embraced, many sobbing. They have received the vindication they hoped for. Our Church will bless their partnerships in hopes that they truly are, “Following the Holy Spirit’s direction in acting prophetically on this matter.”

Some bishops split their choices. A couple voted no on the resolution, but have already announced plans to implement the blessing ceremony in their dioceses. Let there be no doubt, this will fly through the House of Deputies with little discussion and a vote that makes Bishops look like a different resolution.

Several bishops voted no because of extensive ties with African bishops who will now be in great danger as they live in Muslim dominated areas in their countries. Prayers appreciated for safety and mercy for these courageous men and women in Uganda, Sudan, South Sudan, Nigeria and Indonesia. There are many others too.

I received an email 10 minutes ago that said, “Thank God I left TEC. What will you do now?”

Many will ask themselves that question tonight and in the weeks to come.

The Wetzels and many others have long written about the abominations (plural) taking place in the Episcopal Church, aka TEC, which in my opinion means “Trashing Everything Christian”. They, and others, decried women priests, then women bishops, then the first (and not the last)openly homosexual bishop and now these sham ceremonies for “blessing” homosexual coupling.

The theologically challenged folks are quick to say that they are simply following the lead of the Holy Spirit in making these massive changes in the church (destroying christian orthodoxy, actually). Likewise, the more orthodox folks say they too are following the leading and urging of the Holy spirit. One thing is crystal clear,God the Holy Ghost,is NOT confused; one group is right and the other is decidedly wrong. I can only wonder when the Wetzels (I’m not picking on them here) and others will finally acknowledge that they cannot any longer be yoked with unbelievers and; therefore, remove themselves from those who have a severe case of “itching ears” and buying into myth.

Well, it seems to me that the only place to be safe from both Obamacare and gay marriage is to be a Catholic in Texas.

Let them do what they want, but I will not let myself be led by those who would turn on the Lord. We see clearly what is defined within the good book.

Is it for the politics of secular society they yearn for, or for God’s eye ... seems to me that all of this is coming right out of prophesy and Revelation, as foretold.....

Apparently, they have changed them from “The Ten Commandments” to “The Ten Suggestions”.

Paul’s letter to the Romans says it all:

For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who suppress the truth in unrighteousness, 19 because what may be known of God is manifest in them, for God has shown it to them. 20 For since the creation of the world His invisible attributes are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even His eternal power and Godhead, so that they are without excuse, 21 because, although they knew God, they did not glorify Him as God, nor were thankful, but became futile in their thoughts, and their foolish hearts were darkened. 22 Professing to be wise, they became fools, 23 and changed the glory of the incorruptible God into an image made like corruptible man—and birds and four-footed animals and creeping things.

24 Therefore God also gave them up to uncleanness, in the lusts of their hearts, to dishonor their bodies among themselves, 25 who exchanged the truth of God for the lie, and worshiped and served the creature rather than the Creator, who is blessed forever. Amen.

26 For this reason God gave them up to vile passions. For even their women exchanged the natural use for what is against nature. 27 Likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust for one another, men with men committing what is shameful, and receiving in themselves the penalty of their error which was due.

28 And even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge, God gave them over to a debased mind, to do those things which are not fitting; 29 being filled with all unrighteousness, sexual immorality,[c] wickedness, covetousness, maliciousness; full of envy, murder, strife, deceit, evil-mindedness; they are whisperers, 30 backbiters, haters of God, violent, proud, boasters, inventors of evil things, disobedient to parents, 31 undiscerning, untrustworthy, unloving, unforgiving,[d] unmerciful; 32 who, knowing the righteous judgment of God, that those who practice such things are deserving of death, not only do the same but also approve of those who practice them.

It’s very sad but not even remotely unexpected. For those who opened the floodgates in 1930 (lambeth Conference) with the approval of “acts against nature” via contraception, there was only one way to go.

(I hit post too quickly).

What I mean to say is this: any church that approves contraceptive sex and calla it godly, will eventually approve homosexual marriage and call it godly. It's not just a slippery slope: it's a logical four-lane highway.

You are SO correct in pointing to one of the beginnings of the four lane (or more) highway slope: Another one is the acceptance of divorce + remarriage for first the laity, then the clergy.

In fact, serial marriage has become so “normalized” among the clergy I have heard some speak deridingly of those who take their vow seriously as “still on his first marriage”—as though that were some sort of character flaw.

“This is so sad. Will it mean more people coming to orthodox churches that do not have gay marriages”

This is the main reason so many Lutherans and especially
Episcopalians are coming into the Catholic Church, where doctrine is determined by the word of God, not a show of hands.

You use that same “vote” line on every post.
I attend an Episcopal Church since my grandchild goes to a pre-school there.

The Vicar is a wonderful Christian man. The vicar's wife is the canter director and is a selfless, wonderful Christian lady. The staff of the school and church are wonderful.

The congregation is welcoming and as Christian as any you could hope to find.

The small church has a great outreach providing funds and labor for a Christian youth camp, a program to make repairs for homes of elderly. They provide volunteer and financial support for a work release canter, a home for abused and abandoned women and children, and operated a thrift store and food bank.

It is not church members who are voting for these unchristian positions. It is those who have been “called” to service.

The Roman Catholic Church has it own problems with “called” members of the church, ordained and laity, who flaunt biblical teachings. You can read those from the Chicago priest, to the nuns, or bishops (such as the ones in DC who just punished the Priest for refusing mass to an openly avowed atheist and lesbian.

I do believe a vote is taken when a new pope is chosen.

Selecting a new Pope has nothing to do with Church
doctrine.

Speaking of the Episcopal Church, they are losing members daily to the Catholic Church because they caved in to the homosexual agenda. And once again, the word of God has nothing to do with their doctrine. Their doctrine is voted on by people. Makes no difference what the Bible says.

The pope is “the direct representative of God to the church” and that doesn't effect doctrine?

I happen to be LCMS myself. I attend service at the Episcopal church to support my 4 yr old grandson is attending church and learning that Jesus is our salvation.
