Brook Village Retirement Home in North Providence has banned a small group of residents from praying the Rosary in the common area after one resident complained.
Residents tell WPRO’S John DePetro that a group would gather every Monday in the community room at 11:30 a.m. and watch “The Holy Rosary with Mother Angelica and the Nuns of Our Lady of the Angels Monastery,” on the Catholic television network. During the program the group would pray aloud.
According to the residents, property manager Carol Conti told the group they could no longer pray aloud in the common space after a resident complained. John DePetro attempted to speak with Conti but she refused to comment.

The politics that go on in a retirement home can be quite contentious.
If they allow other small groups to congregate in the common room for ANY purpose, then they must allow this group to meet. Anyone who doesn’t like it can go to their own room and close the door so they don’t hear it. They are not a captive audience.
Does living in a nursing home trump the First Amendment right to freedom of religion and the “free exercise thereof”? Just because one ungodly sorehead complains does not mean that the rest need to give up this right. If so, churches should establish their own nursing homes.
I’m not going to damn the nursing home director just yet. She got a complaint and said they could not pray aloud. Implicit in this is that they could pray in the common room and watch the show quietly. Perhaps she could have found another room with a TV for them to use and perhaps the person who complained is an old crank who should have been ignored, but I’m not going to assign bad motives to the director unless I see more.
Interesting...since these people sell the idea the facility is their “home”. I guess all bets are off when they sign the admission agreement.
One has no First Amendment right to exercise their religion in a nursing home. The Bill of Rights applies only to the government.
The nursing home has no legal obligation to do that.

The Rosary is a powerful prayer and meditation on the major events in the life of Jesus. It’s a wonder it does not offend, if not frighten, more people in today’s world.

Correct me if i’m wrong. In NM seniors PAY for their retirement home room and amenities. My relative had to sign over all his SS benefit to the nursing home plus family members had to cough up the 100 or so dollar a month shortfall in their rates since SS wasn’t enough. So how do the nursing home with residents paying for their room and food and being able to use the rec room for TV, card games etc. then ban paying customers from any activity that can’t be deemed harmfull to residents ?
The person that dislike it can make other plans. Just like the people that dislike bingo, crafts, etc.

They don’t have to but it’s a hell of a thing to allow it one minute then take it away. These people are in their final years, they should be allowed to pray.
It would be nice if the joint had a chapel, which could be regularly reserved for the rosary and for protesters to reserve for their prayers.
It sounds like it is a space use problem caused by an all round disregard for religion, period.
I’m not sure how they are run other than they are extremely expensive.
