Will Romney's security hinder Mormon temple visits?
Independent Mail ^ | October 9, 2012 | THOMAS BURR

Mitt Romney has gone to church several times since the Secret Service began guarding the Republican nominee, but he's yet to take in the more sacred Mormon rite: visiting an LDS temple.

As the first Mormon heading a major-party presidential ticket, Romney's newfound position with a Secret Service detail raises a question of how his around-the-clock protection would affect his ability to visit The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints' most holy buildings.

While the general public can worship at an LDS meetinghouse, only church members in good standing are allowed inside temples, including one just outside Washington, D.C., in a Maryland suburb.

"There's no way the Secret Service is going to put up with that (restriction), with all due respect," says Ronald Kessler, author of "In the President's Secret Service: Behind the Scenes With Agents in the Line of Fire and the Presidents They Protect." "They will get permission and, of course, the church will understand and want him protected. They will go in."

Kessler says protectees, like presidents or presidential candidates, get a say in the level of security they need, though they also understand the threats against them at all times and are smart enough to know it would be too risky to go it alone.

"It would be ludicrous if his Secret Service couldn't protect him in any area like that where there are so many people. He would be a perfect target," Kessler says. "Even Mormons can be criminals."

Romney's campaign referred questions about the candidate's security detail to the Secret Service, which also declined comment, noting that it doesn't speak publicly about its means and methods of securing its charges.

LDS Church spokesman Scott Trotter, likewise, said the church wouldn't comment on security matters.

The Mormon Church would be wise to find a way around this rule lest it be seen as preventing a member from worshiping. There’s no way that a President would...or should...*ever* be with SS protection. Not even for a millisecond.

That’s just silly. It’s not as if they couldn’t make an exception for the POTUS or that there isn’t a single Morman in the secret service or that he could merely not attend a super duper secret temple meeting.

The Mormon Church will be happy to do whatever Bishop Romney tells them. Especially since there was an early prophecy about a Mormon leader becoming Potus.

This certainly won’t be a problem.

I’d pay for a secret service memoir about all the batshit insane stuff Romney and his charlatan cult believe in.

Oh damn, just noticed this was in religion, so it’ll get deleted.

I find it hard to believe that there is no one in the Secret Service with a temple recommend.

Do you think there might be a member or two within the ranks of the secret service ?

Also, I had dealings with the Church’s security dept while running security for a hotel in SLC.

Their intel was always the best and their people were VERY well trained.

Regardless of one’s feelings about MormonISM (plenty of dissent here on this forum), the one thing you can say is that it is refreshing that one could actually expect that this potential President of the United States would have to deal with the exceptions of his position and the desire to attend a church regularly.

This is something we CLEARLY HAVEN’T HAD TO OR WILL NEED TO WORRY ABOUT WITH OBAMA......he doesn’t need to; he carries his prayer rug wherever he goes.

This seems to presume there aren’t plenty of LSD SS agents. Unlikely. Practicing LSD are perfect candidates for SS.

Maybe he can drum up a Mormom SS detail for just that purpose.

Closed meetings of any sort be it the local city council, the school board, a church, or a business is ridiculous, imo. Smells fishy. What are they hiding?

Any pres would do himself good to attend various denominational services with the First Family.

Very possible. But I think it would be irresponsible for the SS to assign agents to the President on the basis of religion...only competence and experience.

Their intel was always the best and their people were VERY well trained.

Yes,the SS could certainly cooperate with Church officials but they need to run the show.If anyone "bends" on this issue it must be the Church. There's gotta be a way...I can't imagine the Church wanting any world leader to be endangered due to his/her attendance.

I don't know.

I thought cavorting in Columbian cathouses was now a prerequisite for service.
