Response from Mark Moorhead to your comment regarding Cardinal Bagnasco.
Thanks. As I was putting this together, I did a string of days and caught the errors later. All gets resolved eventually. Sorry about that! You might think of it as Cardinal Bagnasco getting sent to Redemption Island. He's not out of the game!

What was wrong with your other thread on this? Nothing. I began by posting the Introduction and first 4 days on one thread. From here on out, I will post the information on a daily basis.

Why not keep it in one thread rather than spread out in multiple threads? Too long!!! This process of elimination will go on for quite some time. Each day, I will post the links to all of the previous threads.

Once all the names are given it will get shorter and it would be easier for discussing the various Cardinals to have all their info in the one thread, rather than having to go back to preceding threads to read the comments about a given person.
Or even condense the info each day, but in the same thread. Just to keep it in one place. jmo

This is too big a deal for there not to be a little PC involved?:
Affirmative Action Pope?
...it looks like to me that he has drifted too far from men's souls, and is delving too deep in men's pocketbooks.
...read the paragraph "Hope", it contains PC language....

read the paragraph "Hope", it contains PC language. First off, it helps if you can be specific on these threads and provide the name of the cardinal to whom you are referring. In this case, that would be Cardinal Peter Appiah Turkson from Ghana.
It is also helpful for viewers of this thread to know whether you are speaking from a catholic or protestant perspective. That said, let's take a closer look at the paragraph to which I presume you are referring in the VOA article.
About half of the worlds 1.2 billion Catholics live in the global south. This and other developments such as the role played by former U.N. Secretary General Kofi Annan -- another native Ghanian -- and the rise of U.S. President Barack Obama are raising hope that there might be a black pope.
From the catholic perspective, we view that statement as a reflection of the world rather than specifically the Catholic Church. In fact, the very next statement clarifies the issue.
Dan Jide, protocol officer at Ghana's National Catholic Secretariat, says although the time is ripe for a black man to be considered for the position, it is not so much about color as ability to deliver.
That is supported further on with this statement.
Jide said that ability, coupled with his humility can help the cardinal to relate with people worldwide.
From the Catholic perspective, JPII significantly impacted the global community in ways his predecessors never did. For example:
1. John Paul II, Pope from 1978 to 2005, had the second longest reign of any of the Successors of St. Peter. Pope Pius IX had the longest tenure: 32 years, from 1846 to 1878.
2. In the first 20 years of his Pontificate, John Paul made 84 apostolic voyages, visiting 117 different countries. During this time he made 134 shorter trips inside Italy, reaching 269 different towns. And he carried out apostolic visits to 274 of the 328 parishes in the Rome diocese. During these trips from 1978 to 1998, the Pope delivered 2,194 official public addresses. His busiest speaking tour was his 1979 trip to Ireland and the United States, when he gave 76 public talks in the course of 9 days. His combined travel for the first 20 year took him on trips covering over 1,000,000 miles altogether-- roughly 26 times the circumference of the globe, or more than twice the distance from earth to the moon.
He was able to do this because he was elected at such a young age. These actions set a precedent, especially his outreach to young people with the creation of World Youth Day.
His successor, Pope Benedict XVI, was elected to the papacy at age 78. Initially, he was able to maintain some of these travels, especially the World Youth Day event that takes place every 3 years (2013 is a World Youth Day Event and is scheduled to be held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil). However, since his elevation, worldwide communications have expanded and now, to keep current, a pope is expected to reach out via FACEBOOK and TWITTER.
To sum up, the cardinals will need to take all of the above into consideration in selecting the next pope. This individual must be multilingual - Turkson speaks Hebrew, French, German, Italian, English and his native Fanti, have a good understanding of the worldwide community and be able to relate to them. This is not a "local" but "universal" election that comes with enormous challenges and demands.
Does this help in clarifying your question? Oh ... and by the way ... the Catholic Church has already had 3 African Popes.

I'm confused, never having watched "Survivor". Is this about the Papal Enclave? If so, where are Scola and Bagnasco?
I find this little game to be dismissive of the impact of this decision on the future that we are contemplating as Catholics.

I'm confused, never having watched "Survivor". Is this about the Papal Enclave? If so, where are Scola and Bagnasco? I am not a "Survivor" watcher either but the individual who devised this, is a big fan with theological training, who thought it might be fun (i.e. NOT to be taken seriously), to view the Conclave like the game of Survivor.
Insofar as Bagnasco, the absence of his name is an oversight that has been rectified. Insofar as Scola, the groups are being formed alphabetically for the sake of keeping things simple. We are only on day 5. This was explained in yesterday's Introduction thread that included Days 1 thru 4 here. When you think about it, the process of identifying the candidates, organizing them, setting elimination criteria and then ranking them, is actually quite time consuming. Kudos to Mark Moorhead who developed the process, for purposes of intrigue and entertainment. He has a Master of Arts in Theology and a Catechetical Diploma from the Vatican.

Thank you for your kind response, but I do not find anything entertaining about this election. Imho, the decision of the Papal Conclave is much too serious to treat it in this manner.
