Father Emil Kapaun to be Awarded Medal of Honor
The Witchita Eagle ^ | 2/22/13 | Roy Wenzl and Travis Heying

One of the two iconic photographs of Father Emil Kapaun shows him and another soldier carrying an exhausted GI off a battlefield in Korea, early in the war. The photo shows Kapaun to the GI's left. The soldier on the GI's right side was Capt. Jerome A. Dolan, a medical officer with the 8th Cavalry regiment.

Emil Kapaun, a priest from Kansas celebrated for his actions during the Korean War and in a North Korean prisoner of war camp, will be awarded the Medal of Honor by President Obama, the nation’s highest military award for bravery

Former Kansas Congressman Todd Tiahrt of Goddard called The Eagle on Friday and sent a note he had received from an officer in the Pentagon about preparations for a White House ceremony April 11. Tiahrt later posted the letter on his Facebook page, which said that Kapaun also will be honored April 12 at the Pentagon.

Obama is expected to present the medal to Kapaun’s sister-in-law, Helen, and her children. The president called Helen Kapaun at her Bel Aire home in December to tell her the news.

Helen Kapaun, 83, has said for years that if her brother-in-law ever was awarded the Medal of Honor, she would not go to the ceremony but would ask her children to go in her place.

“But you kind of have to go when you’re requested” by the president of the United States, she said.

An announcement was expected later this month from the Pentagon and the White House about a possible Medal of Honor ceremony. But the news became public after Tiahrt’s Facebook post.

Sen. Pat Roberts and Rep. Mike Pompeo both called The Eagle after the Facebook posting to say that Kapaun deserved the honor.

Wow...after all this time I finally found one thing obama’s done that I can approve of.

Congrats, Fr. Kaplan. May you be canonized as well.

One of your links above, Recognition finally for a warrior priest's heroics was a great article describing why Chaplain Emil Kapaun deserves this medal. Thanks for posting this.

It’s a shame it won’t be awarded by a REAL president, especially not one that left four people to be slaughtered at Benghazi because he had to rest up for a fund raiser.

No doubt Father Kapaun deserved the award as did/do many service people who have performed extraordinarily in combat situations. Having acknowledged this I believe that of late Obama has been awarding an extraordinary number of Medals of Honor for personal show reasons as he has never in my opinion been a true compatriot with USA fighting personnel. I speak as a WWII vet with an only brother killed in that war.

Any American with an IQ over 60 and a basic sense of decency knows that Osama Obama has a white-hot contempt for the United States Armed Forces and very probably always has.If we see him awarding the MoH to "transgendered" service members or those who are said to have displayed "courageous restraint" we shouldn't be surprised.

I agree wholeheartedly that 0bama is awarding an extraordinary number of medals to enhance HIS stature with the troops and the public. In reality, he could care less about the heroism involved.

Thank you and your family for your service and sacrifice as part of The Greatest Generation. Both my parents served in WWII and they educated me about the hardships.

Is this the Congressional Medal of Honor? I thought that was awarded by Congress. Why is the White House involved in the decision?

Yes, but Father Vincent Capodanno, MOH-recipient, is on his way to beatification. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vincent_R._Capodannohttp://www.aquinasandmore.com/catholic-articles/fr.-vincent-capodanno-priest-of-heroic-virtue/article/281/sort/relevance/productsperpage/12/layout/grid/currentpage/1/keywords/capodanno;

The Chaplains and the corpsmen were almost all a cut above the norm.

The award is the Medal of Honor. It is awarded for acts of conspicuous valor "above and beyond the call of duty". It is awarded by the President, in the name of Congress.

That some presidents have been personally unworthy to even enter the same room as a MOH recipient is irrelevant.

Even Choom Gang Barry Benghazi's unspeakable cowardice and disloyalty does not cheapen the Medal ... it cannot. Valor stands on its own. Honourable men see it and are challenged and inspired. Dishonourable men see it and scheme ... or shrivel within themselves.

Barry Hussein is not honourable; he is a scheming, lying, manipulative piece of filth.

The comparison makes the honour of our military heroes shine all the brighter.

This bastard communist son of a commie muslim slut whore mother has no business handing out the MOH to anybody.

“But you kind of have to go when you’re requested” by the president of the United States, she said.

Yeah, good idea enfranchising women.

OK, that ‘splains it. I’d always heard it called The Congressional Medal of Honor, but was never clear on exactly WHO actually awarded it.
