The History Channel's unlikely hit ratings winner 'The Bible' aired its gut wrenching Easter finale on Sunday evening - packing an emotional punch so hard that it reduced many of its dedicated viewers to tears.

The harrowing episode entitled the 'Passion' dramatized the inevitable crucifixion of Jesus Christ on Calvary, leaving many shocked as the full horror of a Roman execution was laid bare for the program's ten million plus followers.

Indeed, Twitter lit up during the visceral scenes of torture, with many declaring the heart-breaking depiction of Jesus Christ's sacrifice had caused them to break out in floods of tears - with some people taking to the social networking site to share pictures of their distress.

If the Jews could sentence him to death, why would they have needed the Romans to do it?

According to the show, the Jews form of capital punishment was stoning and with so many Jesus supporters in town they were afraid of a riot which might provoke the Romans.

Christ died for the lies, distortion and governmental corruption of which you speak.

Give thanks.

Why is the evil still here?

God permits the evil — just as in the Old Testament. Remember when Moses talked him down on the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah? 50 good people, 40, 30, 20, 10 — ??

There weren’t even ten good people in the cities and as Lot and his wife left — they were destroyed.

Only one family was saved.

What about the great flood? Only Noah and his family were saved.

Never said or even hinted that evil was caused by GOD. Allah yes, God no.

Sorry, assuming for a moment that God could stop all or most of the pain and suffering, this sounds like a cop out to me to excuse what has transpired for all of recorded history.

The “free will” excuse does not, IMO, hold water as described in the example below:

ALLOWING pain suffering of a new born baby with some malady and attempt to excuse that by the “original sin” excuse is BS aplenty to me. That little baby did nothing worthy of such suffering. There is something seriously wrong in the logic of anyone who tries to defend this.

IMO, justice would demand swift punishment for actual bad deeds by the powerful against the weak.

While a firm believer in God, albeit questioning his motives and possible abuse of power, I am sure I will be punished for such thoughts but those thoughts bubbled or should I say boiled to the top after watching the Bible series.

My husband and I commented last night that it would be a great advertising case study to see who advertised the 1st week (Christian Mingle and Lifeway) as compared to who advertised last night (Cadilac, Sprint etc).

The best part of “The Bible” was the actor playing Satan. He looked like Barry Obama. How appropriate!

Perhaps a bit of ‘poetical license’ since Ciaiphas and the sandhedran wanted Jesus dead as a blasphmer. But if you cold stone an adulteress to death? Of course I could see that in the patricarchical society why a woman could have been stoned to death while a man couldn’t. Gotta keep the females under control. (sarcasm)

And from Mark: 14:61-64 — 61 But he was silent and made no answer. Again the high priest asked him, “Are you the Christ, the Son of the Blessed?” 62 And Jesus said, “I am; and you will see the Son of man seated at the right hand of Power, and coming with the clouds of heaven.” 63 And the high priest tore his garments, and said, “Why do we still need witnesses? 64 You have heard his blasphemy. What is your decision?” And they all condemned him as deserving death.

Love Christ, but given the world’s condition since his death, he died for nothing. Humanity sucks. Some more than others.

I know and truly appreciate that is not what you believe, but unless my eyes are lying to me about everything history tells us, humans suck and we need some better guidance.

I thought the series was both moving and very positive in its portrayal of the essential values and outlook of Western Christianity. At the same time, the series did not flinch from illustrating the foibles and failings of human character.

As Quigley put it so eloquently in this excerpt from Tragedy and Hope, the signal outlook of Western Christianity is...

Love, humility, brotherhood, cooperation, the sanctity of work, the fellowship of community, the image of man as a fellow creature made in the image of God, respect for women as personalities and partners of men, mutual helpmates on the road to spiritual salvation, and the vision of our universe, with all of its diversity, complexity, and multitude of creatures, as a reflection of the power and goodness of God...

As Quigley noted, these basic aspects of Christ’s teachings are almost totally absent from the other vast cultural currents that comprise the last 2000 years. They are in fact almost totally absent from the entire sweep of human history, appearing only here and there as sparks that were soon extinguished. Despotism - benign at best, but usually not is what has characterized human civilization ever since the transition from hunter-gather groups to the great agrarian revolution thousands of years ago.

Quigley might have added the qualities of love, forgiveness and mercy to his codification of the Western Christian lookout; Christ's teachings represented the first time that these qualities were embodied and defined as part of the Christian system of belief.

So I have to applaud what the series' producers have done - they have without shame or apology conveyed that which truly made Western Christianity, and by extension, Western Civilization, so great. In that regard, the series serves as a great re-connector.

The Left, of course, is deeply saddened. Enraged, come to think about it.

I appreciate your honesty and I understand your feelings about this. I feel them too. However, when I began to realize that true wisdom begins with the fear of God, I realized that my feelings are not the standard of wisdom I need to listen to. My feelings change every day as I learn new things. I used to be a political liberal until I saw the inconsistencies and errors in that philosophy. My human feelings about truth are not a reliable standard. I have learned to trust in God’s word.

A case in point is the story of the prodigal son. When I first studied this story, I was full of righteous indignation at the boy who squandered his inheritance and I was fully sympathetic with the older brother. I was mad at Jesus for telling a story in which the boy was so quickly forgiven. As time passed, however, and I learned about my own sin, I turned completely around and now I cannot read that story without getting choked up over God’s incredible love.

This has happened time and again as I get mad at God and then later see his wisdom and love. Now when I cannot understand something in his word, I simply wait and trust.

This world is cursed...terribly cursed by God because of our sin. I do not fully understand it but I wait in eager expectation for the full realization of our salvation in Christ.

This world is not our home.

Anyway, I was disappointed in myself as I wanted to come away from this series with more kindness in my heart and the exact opposite took place.

Perfectly understandable given the overwhelming evil we face today. Yes, power corrupts, as Acton has said. Power kills, as the entire history of the last two hundred years has shown. But ultimately, the decision to yield to that corruption remains for us to make - it is the double-edged sword of free will. That too is one of the hallmarks of Western Christianity and Civilization. Take heart from one of Margaret Thatcher's observations:

"Freedom is not synonymous with an easy life. ... There are many difficult things about freedom: It does not give you safety, it creates moral dilemmas for you; it requires self-discipline; it imposes great responsibilities; but such is the nature of Man and in such consists his glory and salvation."

Your example of the suffering innocent baby explains why the Lord hates sin. Sin hurts innocents. If our rebellious sin only hurt ourselves, it would be called “justice.”

Genesis 3 tells us that out sin not only broke our relationship with God, it broke the whole cosmos, which is why innocents continue to suffer.

That is why the Lord went to such great lengths to rescue us from this fallen world, and to restore us to a right relationship with Him. Instead of being angry with God for our suffering here on earth, we should be grateful that he offers to rescue us from eternal suffering, which is what each of us deserve, for we have all rebelled against Him in one way or another.

There was no specific group who could be accused of crucifying Jesus.

The Jews accused him.
The Romans crucified him.
The disciples cowered and hid.

And when Jesus asked God if there was another way whereby men could be saved, God said, “No.”

In the end, it was only Jesus love that held him to that cross.

Hollywood must be in tears that the Bible series had more viewers than any cable TV show in history and will be a best seller in pay per view and DVD markets. The Bible was a blockbuster compared to the schlock, anti-Christian rants and semi porn that Hollywood has turned out lately. The Hollywood types will never get that the people who will potentially pay to see their movies do not share their leftist, atheistic and America bashing views.

If God were to decree tonight that all evil and sin should be removed from the world - which of us would still be here tomorrow?

Why do little babies suffer for things they have not done? ..I must admit I do not know......There are some things that we will never fully understand, all we can do is trust..... At times it is our reaction to suffering, rather than the suffering itself, that determines whether the experience is one of blessing or blight.

Peace comes when we recognize that in this life we do not have the full picture.........our understanding has limitations....Ultimately we can trust God because He is God.... who knows the beginning from the end and sees the grand picture.... He will have the final word and He will be vindicated.

“And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain: for the former things are passed away,” (Rev. 21:4).

Amen!.....”He didn't’t die to fix THIS WORLD.”

He died to redeem us from the self-destructive collision course the human race is on....

Aside from that, I think we look at all that's wrong, all that's bad...and forget to see God's hand working with mercy, grace, and love toward us, ...and we surely do not deserve it.

He's not finished with us yet...there are still those coming to Him...and I believe the only reason He's allowed man to continue thus far.

I was so disappointed in the opener that I didn’t watch.

However, i am very happy that a series based on the Bible was a big hit.

It shows the media people that they are wrong about what America wants!

That is a very gratifying thought.

You have not yet had a revelation of the utter holiness of God and how ALL MAN falls short...even the newborn babe you use in your example.

God allows horrible things to happen to try to emphasize to us that we are in a SINFUL world. It is not this world which is our home...it is the next.

If God allowed everything to be peachy people would NEVER look to the next world and God's purity and holiness. God is never wrong. It is tempting to think He is but that is just fallen man speaking. Sorry to be so forthright...but this is the truth. If you genuinely want truth, study the Bible more (inductively). Truth is there. I've been looking to it for guidance for 20 years and it is the only thing that never fails me.
