Elder Bruce R. McConkie’s Son Shares His Father’s Legacy [Lds leader taught controversial teachings]
LDS Church News ^ | April 24, 2013 | R. Scott Lloyd

Posted on 05/06/2013 10:17:36 AM PDT by Colofornian

...Bruce R. McConkie was a boy growing up in Monticello, Utah...

...the son grew to be a member of the Quorum of the Twelve from 1972 until his death in 1985, well respected and remembered for his written and spoken discourses in which he taught the doctrines of the gospel with clarity and power.

The above...was recounted by Elder McConkie’s son Joseph Fielding McConkie on April 11 in an address in the Assembly Hall on Temple Square in Salt Lake City for the monthly Men and Women of Faith Lecture Series sponsored by the Church History Library. His topic was “Bruce R. McConkie: A Special Witness.”

SNIP

“At his funeral, then Elder Boyd K. Packer [of the Quorum of the Twelve] said, ‘If ever there was a man who was raised up unto a very purpose, if ever a man was prepared against a certain day and need, it was Bruce R. McConkie."

SNIP

“A valid and binding testimony of Christ grows out of a sound understanding of the Restoration. You cannot get to Gethsemane without going through the Sacred Grove.”

SNIP

Brother McConkie said his father drew freely from what became known as the Joseph Smith Translation in his own writings, including Mormon Doctrine, Doctrinal New Testament Commentary, and the six-volume work beginning with The Promised Messiah and concluding with The Millennial Messiah.

He recalled his father’s address at a 1979 BYU symposium on the Doctrine and Covenants in which he said, “The test of discipleship is how totally and completely and fully we believe the word that was revealed through Joseph Smith and how effectively we echo or proclaim that word to the world.”

“It was the doctrine upon which Dad was raised,” Brother McConkie commented. “It was the doctrine on which he raised his own children.”

Since you are hell bent on trying to discredit and disgrace the LdS servants of God

Since you are hell bent to defend these same people, why not come back with something a little stronger than simply trying to divert the issue? So if Colofornian dug up dirt on these Popes, how would that make the actions of the LDS "prophets" right?

In the space of about a dozen posts, we see two of the classic strategies of Mormon apologists: divert the issue or insult your opponents. Next will be either an attempt to obfuscate the issue or silence. I'm sure that it is hard to defend the indefensible but I pray that the Holy Spirit will use these discussions to open your eyes to see that you're on the wrong side of the argument and that you've been mislead by the LDS leaders.

Oops. Should be “misled” and not “mislead”.

#1...God counters falsehood with truth (so, of course, God doesn't leave Mormonism unchallenged)

#2...I don't oppose Mormon as a people...'tis the "ISM" of MormonISM

#3...Only those who don't want to listen to what the Spirit says would lump all He says -- and those thru whom He speaks -- as a "reductionism" of an "echo chamber"

(Even if you don't believe the Spirit is speaking thru us, as I don't for the Lds missionaries who come to my door, it wouldn't be very hospitable for me to label every single thing that diverse Mormon missionaries say to me as "an echo chamber." That would be entirely disrespectful toward the unique make-up of who that Mormon is.)

I’ve never seen him ‘debate’.

He says what he believes and lets the chips fall where they may.

I can respect that.

Since you are hell bent on trying to

Attributing motives to and/or mind reading of other Freepers are forms of "making it personal."

Discuss the issues all you want, but do not make it personal.

” Oh, for God’s sake. Let’s go back into the lives of every Pope and find out exactly what they talked about with their families and every word they uttered when lying in bed and when they spoke with their mothers about private things.”

Brigham Young uttered this:

“Now if any of you will deny the plurality of wives, and continue to do so, I promise that you will be damned;

and I will go still further and say, take this revelation, or any other revelation that the Lord has given,

and deny it in your feelings, and I promise that you will be damned.

Brigham Young - JoD 3:266 (July 14, 1855)

I guess you better hope the libs win the gay marriage battle, that way you guys can bring back the everlasting covenant of polygamy and NOT go to hell after all!

“Brigham Young uttered this:”

Again, not LDS Scripture. Brigham Young was a great man, known as the “great colonizer” but a man, not perfect. There was only One Perfect who lived on this earth, Jesus Christ the Son of God, our Redeemer and Savior of all mankind. All the rest of us - including the Catholic Popes and Presidents/Prophets of the LDS Church - are just people - not divine.

But go ahead and try to besmirch dead men’s names. Just sad.

“Again, not LDS Scripture.”

Ooooops!

“The Journal of Discourses deservedly ranks as one of the standard works of the Church, and every rightminded Saint will certainly welcome with joy every number (issue) as it comes forth.“ (President George Q. Cannon, Journal of Discourses, Preface, Volume 8.)

“Each successive Volume of these Discourses is a rich mine of wealth, containing gems of great value, and the diligent seeker will find ample reward for his labor. After the fathers and mothers of this generation have made them the study of their lives their children’s children will find that they are still unexhausted, and rejoice that this Record has been handed down from their fathers to also aid them in following the way of life.” (Apostle Orson Pratt, Preface. Volume 3.)

“It is impossible to give monetary value to the past volumes of this publication, … Those who read the utterances of the servants of God, contained in this book, under the same influence by which the speakers were inspired, cannot fail to receive profit from the perusal.” (President Joseph F. Smith, Preface, Volume 18.)

“We take great pleasure in presenting to the Saints and the world the … the Journal of Discourses, which they will find contains rich treasures of information concerning the glorious principles of Eternal Life, as revealed through God’s anointed servants in these last days. All who read the discourses contained in this Volume are earnestly recommended to adapt them to their lives by practice, and we can confidently assure them that, in doing so, they are laying up a store of knowledge that will save and exalt them in the Celestial kingdom.” (Apostle Albert Carrington, Journal of Discourses, Preface, Volume 15.)

“I say now, when they [his discourses] are copied and approved by me they are as good Scripture as is couched in this Bible . . . “ (Prophet Brigham Young, Journal of Discourses, vol. 13, p. 264; see also p. 95).

“I know just as well what to teach this people and just what to say to them and what to do in order to bring them into the celestial kingdom...I have never yet preached a sermon and sent it out to the children of men, that they may not call Scripture. Let me have the privilege of correcting a sermon, and it is as good Scripture as they deserve. The people have the oracles of God continually.” (Prophet Brigham Young, Journal of Discourses, vol. 13, p. 95).

Where were you when all these silly Prophets and Apostles were saying this stuff? You could have saved THEM a whole lot of embarrassment!

“Young was a great man, known as the “great colonizer” but a man, not perfect.”

According to Brigham Young and your religion, he is a Prophet of the most High God (at least, ONE of them). Therefore, he must be judged by Prophetic standards:

Deu_18:22 When a prophet speaketh in the name of the LORD, if the thing follow not, nor come to pass, that is the thing which the LORD hath not spoken, but the prophet hath spoken it presumptuously: thou shalt not be afraid of him.

“Now if any of you will deny the plurality of wives, and continue to do so, I promise that you will be damned;

and I will go still further and say, take this revelation, or any other revelation that the Lord has given,

and deny it in your feelings, and I promise that you will be damned.”

Brigham Young - JoD 3:266 (July 14, 1855)

Either he is right, or he is wrong, but no matter how you look at it you’re in serious trouble being a Mormon these days!

The doctrine of my Church is contained in the Scriptures. Guess what? I am getting used to this kind of nonsense. The pioneers of my Church were persecuted and driven out of every place they called home - including women and children - until they finally reached the Salt Lake valley. All of their belongings had been stolen and many had died. What was their great offense? Religion - in a country where freedom of religion is supposed to be promised in the U.S. Constitution, a document that my Church holds dear.

What has changed? Some people still hold the same ill-conceived opinions about me and my Church. Fact remains that Jesus Christ is our Savior, Lord, Redeemer and Soon-Coming King. He is the Head of the Church.

You will know them by their fruit.

Have a great day.

And the words of your “prophets” are scripture.

Words of Our Living Prophets

In addition to these four books of scripture, the inspired words of our living prophets become scripture to us. Their words come to us through conferences, the Liahona or Ensign magazine, and instructions to local priesthood leaders. “We believe all that God has revealed, all that He does now reveal, and we believe that He will yet reveal many great and important things pertaining to the Kingdom of God” (Articles of Faith 1:9).

Straight from your LDS website.

Why are you working so hard to avoid addressing this simple and clear fact.
