Why I Hope Convicted Abortionist Kermit Gosnell Doesn’t Go to Hell
life news ^ | Josh Brahm

Posted on 05/15/2013 3:29:04 PM PDT by Morgana

I spent a lot of time yesterday sorting out my feelings about Gosnell and his conviction, as well as the way some extreme pro-life people are talking about him. Thanks to a few respected colleagues who took some time with me to discuss in private, I think I’ve worked out the three major feelings I have. I suspect most of my readers will agree with the first two, but have questions about the third:

1 I’m glad limited justice has been served. 2 I’m glad he’s going to prison. 3 Yet, I don’t want Gosnell to go to Hell. I’d rather spend time with him in Heaven.

Before you roll your eyes and move on, please give me the chance to explain why I don’t think any of those statements makes me a weak pro-lifer.

1. I’m glad limited justice has been served.

I do not think there is anything wrong with wanting justice done. I felt a little bit good watching Gosnell walk to the police van after the trial, because I felt like justice was done. It would have been terrible if he had walked on all the charges!

The justice served Gosnell so far is limited, because ultimate justice won’t be served until judgement day. Either Gosnell will throw himself at the mercy of Jesus while in prison, (and in that case, Jesus paid the penalty for his sins on the cross) or Gosnell will bear the penalty for his own sins when he meets his Maker.

I realize that some people feel like prison is too good for Gosnell, and thus justice won’t really be done, even on Earth. Frankly, there’s a part of me that agrees. Knowing about some of the things Gosnell did in his “clinic” causes me to think that this guy is probably one of the most evil men in the country. There is a cruel coldness to what Gosnell did to babies and his patients that could have come from a horror movie plot. Perhaps Gosnell does deserve worse than an American prison.Yet…

2. I’m glad he’s going to prison.

By this, I mean I’m glad we don’t live in a country that would carry out a quick execution on this man. I’d rather he be in prison. Why? Because of my third statement, that I mean with all my heart:

3. I don’t want Gosnell to go to Hell. I’d rather spend time with him in Heaven.

I would love to see Gosnell convert before he dies. So I hope for the best for his soul, while hoping that justice is done on Earth, which I don’t think is mutually exclusive.

My friend Abby Johnson, who used to work at a Planned Parenthood abortion facility before becoming a pro-life advocate, sees the worst from the pro-life movement on her Facebook page. I don’t know why she attracts the meanest people in our movement, but she does. It’s saddened me over and over to see that this person who’s relatively new to our movement because she came from the other side gets metaphorically hit in the face with buckets of ice water on a daily basis from the people who comment on her status updates.

Abby posted a few statements responding to the extreme comments people were writing on her page about Gosnell, and followed those up with a blog post explaining her feelings in greater detail. It basically comes down to this: she doesn’t feel like she’s better than Gosnell.

Then Abby writes,

“So when someone talks about Gosnell and says things like, “murderers and people like him don’t deserve to breathe the same air as I do,” or “I hope he burns in hell,” it hurts a little. Because that was me. But I am still here…breathing that same air…and trying to spend my life righting my wrongs. And it’s not just me. I know they hurt others like me, as well. People who have left the abortion industry and will work every day to recover from their sins. People who are still in the industry and think they will be shunned by the pro-life movement…maybe they would reach out to us if they knew we would accept them. I am always terrified that clinic workers will see some of the words from pro-lifers. I have been told by several former workers that they will NEVER come forward with their stories because they are so scared of how they will be treated by us…by US…the supposed “Christian” movement. Their fears are real AND legitimate.”

I don’t think writing that ”I HOPE GOSNELL BURNS IN HELL!” is a virtuous response for a Christian. I know a lot of people are going to Hell. But I’d rather nobody does. I’d rather everybody converts first, and that includes evil men like Kermit Gosnell. I think God agrees with this sentiment:

“The Lord is not slow to fulfill his promise as some count slowness, but is patient toward you, not wishing that any should perish, but that all should reach repentance.”

~ 2 Peter 3:9 (ESV)

If Gosnell contacted me and asked me to visit him in prison, I would go. And I would unashamedly tell him the Good News that Christ died and conquered sin, and offers atonement to all who will accept that gift, including sinners like him and me.

And I would be ecstatic if Gosnell surrendered to Christ before dying in prison.

I would like to hang out with a converted Gosnell in Heaven for some of the same reasons I want to hang out with Paul in Heaven. It would be more evidence of how amazing God’s grace actually is.

CLICK LIKE IF YOU’RE PRO-LIFE!

I know Gosnell did horrific things, and I know that the pro-life movement has talked about Gosnell a lot in order to get our society thinking about the things he did, in hopes that we can find some common ground and ultimately talk about whether there are any morally relevant differences between what Gosnell did to viable babies outside of the womb, and what we do to thousands of non-viable babies inside the womb every day.

But now that justice has been served, I think this is a moment where we need to encourage our people to have a heart like Christ does. My pragmatic reason for that is this is one of those news stories that puts abortion to the front, which is rare right now. People are watching what pro-lifers say about this. That reason alone I think is sufficient for us to act as Christ-like as possible. My principled reason is that we are supposed to have a heart like Christ does, regardless of whether it gains us any public traction.

Not me, I hope he goes to hell. Don’t actually care if that makes me a bad person. I can live with it.

It’s okay if not many agree with the author. God doesn’t want him to go to hell either, and that is good company to be in.

agree with you.

i guess i would rather everyone be saved because if you really think about it, eternity in hell is hard to fathom on anyone. i guess i’d say for the absolute worst people, i wouldn’t be “sad” if they didn’t get saved, i would just generally be disappointed they were people that didn’t choose to accept God’s salvaton.

If vengeance is mine sayeth the Lord then I think we should send SOB’s like Gosnell to Him as quickly as possible so He can have his vengeance.

Num_35:30 "If anyone kills a person, the murderer shall be put to death on the evidence of witnesses. But no person shall be put to death on the testimony of one witness.

I would suggest that she spend a bit more time in the scriptures to find out what God commands. Putting people in prison for capital offenses is not what God had in mind.

Frankly, it's wacko Christians like this who fail to be obedient to God's commandments under the guise of "love" that gives Christians a bad name.

God’s mercy is without limit but, Gosnell’s redemption must start with him. He must recognize his sins, truly repent and beg for God’s mercy. While it is good we pray for his salvation, I don’t have much hope for him. Anyone who could “snip” the spine and kill a helpless baby without any remorse is evil no different than the Nazis who sent millions to their deaths in concentration camps.

Agreed. I’m no less evil than he is because of my heart.

I just think there is nothing healthier for our own souls than to sincerely pray that bad people truly find God before their final judgement.

Sorry my FRiend but there are more than enough "good" people who are blindly being led down the road to Hell that need our prayers that we ought not waste our valuable prayer time petitioning God to save this monster.

This man can pray for himself after he has asked the thousands of innocent souls he murdered for forgiveness.

None of us can forgive him for what he has done. Only those whom he murdered can ever grant him that forgiveness and they are not here to give it.

God may grant him mercy if he truly repents, but at this point he has shown no remorse and denies that he has done anything wrong.

If you want to waste your time praying for this monster, then I can only hope you spend thousands of more hours praying for people who are similarly on the road to Hell, but whose sins are not so wicked and vile.

If ever a man lived who deserved Hell more than this man, I have not seen not heard of him.

Set your prayer priorities in order. After you have prayed for everyone else on the planet, then I think it might be ok to mention this monster to God. But until then, I think it a waste of the limited time you have been granted by God on this earth.

I’d prefer to see Gosnell get saved too. I imagine his heart is pretty hard by now, though, what with all the murders.

wow I pray every day for Obama’s conversion like Saint Paul, Obama’s persecution of God’s children in the womb is an abomination!!! But our Lord died for real sin, ugly sins, serious sins and so we pray for our brothers and sister of this world!
