I reject the contention that “conservatives” must all think the same thing about everyone. That’s fascist.

I don't explain a Pope. I don't need to explain a Pope. People who know nothing about the Pope try to explain him to me like five blind guys explaining an elephant.

He has his way of looking at the world, and that's nice. And if the nonbelievers, and those of other faiths, like it, fine. Great.

But he's where he needs to be on doctrine. Everything else is organization and window dressing.

When saying not to obsess about 3 or 4 topics, I responded, "Yeah, he's concerned with A LOT MORE than JUST those. Not that he's NOT concerned with those, or that's he's relaxing anything."

People will take anything they like out of context and say that their definition of the man defines the man. No, Francis will define himself, and he'll do that more and more every day.

Funny, not too many people seem to be in my face about his abortion speech a day after saying we should obsess over it. Go figure.

I was conservative in the 70’s and 80’s. These days I run more towards the “reactionary” end of the spectrum, i.e. “Rush Limbaugh is a squishy moderate.”
I’m kinda tired of some of the stuff I see flying around between different groups of Christians. Kinda silly given the fact that Christianity is under the gun around the world, including here at home in the US.

I suspect what we're seeing is a form of rope-a-dope* on those who will in all likelihood never accept authentic Catholic teaching on homosexuality, abortion, and contraception.

Eventually, and I think very soon, Francis will clarify his statements and they will prove completely consistent with Catholic teaching and not a "wonderful, hopeful change."

For the first time in their unthinking lives these same people, who could barely contain their enthusiasm only yesterday, are going to have to use reason to defend their positions, positions they "felt" their way to rather than having arrived at them by reason.

I suspect almost all will go away sad like the wealthy young man who wouldn't sell all his possessions to follow Christ.

*Okay, that's probably not the right term but I can't think of a feint that suckers the opponent into thinking he's got he's got his opposition on the ropes only to have the tables turned on him.

OK, I'll vote conservative...

but I must tell you that it's years since I could use the terms conservative/liberal, or Right/Left, without a conscious sense of irony.

I always list my political principles as "Catholic." If the Pope votes "Catholic" too, that's all I ask.
