Two architectural firms have been selected to collaborate on the transformation of the landmark building and its 34-acre campus.
ORANGE, Calif. — The leading architects in the massive undertaking of renovating the Crystal Cathedral into Christ Cathedral for the Diocese of Orange, Calif., have expressed their excitement about the daunting project.
On Sept. 18, Bishop Kevin Vann of Orange announced that Johnson Fain and Rios Clementi Hale Studios had been selected to collaborate on the transformation of the landmark building and its 34-acre campus.
The Diocese of Orange purchased the 3,000-seat Crystal Cathedral in February of 2012 from the Protestant church that founded it. The purchase was made after Crystal Cathedral had filed for bankruptcy in October 2010, when some of its creditors sued for payment.
“That the Catholic Church would take on a project like this, that they would be able to move to a site with this much promise in it, both in terms of the breadth of the site itself and the possibility of a campus of multiple buildings and multiple activities … is exciting,” Scott Johnson, design partner at Johnson Fain, told CNA Sept. 17.
“And that they would take on as the site of their cathedral, and in particular, the former Crystal Cathedral, which is quite an important landmark building … [the diocese] had great regard and respect for what it means in the cultural community, and they were very thoughtful about it, as they were about the other buildings.”
Johnson Fain will focus on revamping the interior of the cathedral to make it suitable for Catholic worship, while Rios Clementi Hale Studios will oversee the integration of the rest of the campus, including its six other buildings, into a unified whole.

The little THORNCROWN CHAPEL in Eureka Springs Arkansas still beat out the Crystal Cathedral for the top prize in architecture the year they were built.
Yup, that’s a gem.
What are they going to do?

Y’know, it helps to actually RTFA once in a while. One can avoid looking like a moron.
It’s a protestant church that is being renovated into a Catholic church.
It is a group of buildings previously used by a Church, now purchased by a different denomination, which has announced Muslims can go to heaven without faith in Christ. The church is a body of believers, not the buildings.

From what I have read, the Schuller family wanted it to remain a church.
It will be re-dedicated, a new altar blessed, the area of worship, including choir spaces, an Adoration Chapel and the Baptimal Font blessed, and all this done by the Bishop. In fact, the Bishop and the Diocese own the Church. He will open it with new keys on the Dedication Day. They also go around to all the four corners of a new church on the outside — don’t ask me about that on this building.
How do I know this? Because my parish is also building a new Church (we outgrew the old one) and these are steps that have been explained to the entire congregation.

Right here. It is an amazing building, and besides, everywhere the sacred Blood and Body of Our Lord is received, is a beautiful church because Christ makes it beautiful.
However, this feat of modern architecture is not a building well suited for a Catholic Church.
At least it gives the former Crystal Cathedral a whole new life.
