Pope calls synod to discuss families, divorce and remarriage

The pope had told reporters accompanying him on his plane back from Rio de Janeiro in July that the next synod would explore a "somewhat deeper pastoral care of marriage," including the question of the eligibility of divorced and remarried Catholics to receive Communion.

Pope Francis added at the time that church law governing marriage annulments also "has to be reviewed, because ecclesiastical tribunals are not sufficient for this. It is complex, the problem of the pastoral care of marriage."

Such problems, he said, exemplified a general need for forgiveness in the church today.

"The church is a mother, and she must travel this path of mercy, and find a form of mercy for all," the pope said. More at link.

I think that’s the point. The article says that various dioceses have started interpreting things their own way and issuing guidance that may differ from other dioceses; Pope Francis believes there is a need to discuss and clarify all these matters.

I do think the Church could be doing a much better job of supporting marriage to try and head off the need for so many annulments and divorces. If you start looking for help with your marriage within the Church it’s not always easy to find. Nor are celibate priests always comfortable with those issues.

My husband has never been pregnant, yet when I was pregnant he was pretty good at reminding me of the big picture, the precious life I was carrying, when I was deep into the physical discomfort and impatience. I’ll bet there are some priests whose respect for the big picture of marriage, which they cannot themselves participate in, is just what some couples might need in a moment of despair.
